Touring a Legendary Landmark: What's at the Cadillac Ranch?
welcome to the Cadillac Ranch we got up one morning Before Sunrise headed out because the night before and late in the afternoon at Sunset we came by there on the way into Amarillo and it was packed I mean there were people everywhere hardly even a place to park so we decided to skip it because it was too crowded and we thought we got up at uh a crack of dawn get out there there'd be nobody there and uh as you can see as you watch this there were some people but it wasn't super crowded there was a wind advisory in effect it was very very windy the audio for it is almost unusable but at the end I did manage to save some of it using a AI website that I use called l-a-l-a-l-a-i LOL dot a i um and it cleaned it up and removed most of it it's mostly readable uh all the wind noise is gone a couple of words are missing uh sort of garbled or something but for the most part it's not too bad considering it I think the wind was blowing about 40 miles an hour or more over an open field so that's at the far end of the video and uh the very very end uh kind of uh as an add-on bonus you will see the I don't know maybe a mile of the road in front of it on the access road is painted they have not only painted the cars they paint the ground on the way to the cars they painted the road for maybe a mile in front of the cars as the access road they painted the barricade the entire thing and you'll see the road and the barricades at the end if you want to watch that I slowed it down a little bit so you can see it and if you just pause it if you see something you want to read you pause it it's pretty clear so anyway a little history of the Cadillac Ranch I'll give you some info on it it stands along Route 66 West of Amarillo Texas it was invented and built by a bunch of art hippies imported from San Francisco they call themselves The Ant Farm their silent partner was Amarillo billionaire Stanley March III he wanted a piece of public art that would baffle the locals and the hippies came up with a tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin 10 caddies driven into one of Stanley Marsh III's Fields half buried nose down in the dirt supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza they faced West in a line from the 1949 Club sedan to the 1963 Sedan DeVille their tail fins held high for all to see on the empty Texas Panhandle that was in 1974. people would stop on the highway walk out to view the cars then deface them or rip off pieces souvenirs Stanley Marsh III and the Ant Farm were tolerant of this public deconstruction of their art although it doomed the tail fins and eventually came to encourage it decades have passed The Cadillacs have now been in the ground as art longer than they were on the road as cars they're stripped to their battered frames splattered and paint explodes barely recognizable as automobiles yep Cadillac Ranch is more popular than ever it's become a ritual site for those who travel the Mother Road Route 66 the smell of spray paint hits you from 100 yards away the sound of voices chattering in French German UK English make this one of the most polygon places between the U.N and Las Vegas and uh one comment here I saw despite its exposed location in an empty field the Cadillac Ranch seems to give its art anarchists a sense of privacy and anonymity like a urinal cell in a men's room individual painters take a stance facing one of the cars then let it fly surrounding visitors keep their distance perhaps less out of courtesy than from a desire to stay clear of the spray cloud of paint the Europeans really seem to enjoy attacking the cars maybe because they've lacked a good graffiti canvas since the toppling of the Berlin Wall tourists are always welcome at the Cadillac Ranch if you bring spray paint make sure to snap some photos because whatever you create at the Cadillac Ranch will probably only last a few hours before it's created over by someone else that's all take care hope you enjoy this little visit I am also going to create a second video that will be a slideshow of some of the images that I took there and I hope you enjoy all this take care and we'll see in the next
