I'm delighted to say in the piano room today we are welcoming The Fabulous Belinda Carla hello again Hi how are you I'm great and how are you what's more to the point I'm a little bit nervous okay nothing to be nervous about we're looking forward to our fantastic performance we have the BBC Council Orchestra here conducted by Richard Balcom we have backing singers we have Toby on the piano we're everybody here ready to support a big security blanket Ah that's what we want to hear and the first song we're going to hear is one of the great old favorites yes it's Superstar all right so let's have a listen to uh well we're going to hear Superstar a little bit later I think we're going to get you're one of your Heaven is a place on Earth is going to be the first one today oh okay yeah if you don't mind it's all right that's what I think everybody else is set up to play so so should we do that one well why not so here with us in the radio to piano room is Belinda Carlisle [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] when the night falls down you come around [Music] with the sound of kids the street outside [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] who has [Music] for you and you bring me home when I'm lost [Music] baby I was afraid before but I'm not afraid anymore [Music] that's right who Heaven is a place [Applause] [Music] hey everyone [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] place [Music] a brand new version of Heaven is a place on Earth from Belinda Carl how beautiful thank you absolutely lovely and of course I don't want to sort of dwell on the the time lapse but it's exactly 35 years since that was number one here in the UK it's time flies it doesn't it though I've had a great song that was and of course that really introduced you and didn't introduce you but it made the UK public fall in love with that song yeah that's that song sort of changed everything for me um because I was known in the United States but that song you know it became a global hit yeah a fantastic song The the two Diane's working on that uh didn't you Diane Warren was yes she did backing vocals on the original was that right she probably did I mean she has a great voice and it was such a long time ago and she's a friend so and Diane Keaton directed the video and the other Diane directed that and I get weak actually yeah oh well yeah that's that's not a bad pedigree for any any song you have to say and Diane Warren you are currently working with I believe uh yes I am I have a new single coming out and and I think more around March 10th right well we'll come tonight in a little while but you are going to be here in the UK performing yes I started Tour on Friday in Birmingham right and uh it's pretty much all over the country and I'm in London on February 10th at the Palladium right so pretty pretty heavy dates uh it's it's it's three and a half weeks of uh dates which is a lot for me but I'll get you know it'll be you know it's so much fun being on stage intensive work but fun that's that's the main thing yeah I do want to ask you about this sort of female super group that we've been hearing about lately you've been recording with Dolly Parton Cindy Loper Gloria Estefan and Debbie Harry right tell me all about it yes well it kind of just fell out of heaven I'm like Mana um and um it's Diane Warren she wrote the song and I was working on this other project and she asked if I wanted to be part of that group and I said yeah and um so we all recorded our parts it's it's a theme song for a movie that's coming out called 80 for Brady with Jane Fonda Lily Tomlin it's a big movie and so we did the the title track um everybody was you know in dollies and Nashville Cindy and everybody is in New York or Miami and then we did the video remotely too but it looks like we're all together yeah so that's a great what a grouping of people no it was it was a lot of fun and just going back to before your solo career the Go-Go's right what an influential band The Go-Go's were because you know the first female group who wrote all their own songs performed and played all the instruments I was at groundbreaking at the time yeah well I mean we didn't realize it at the time but but uh you know we started from zero we had no idea how to do anything even plug in guitars into amps and how to write songs but but we worked really hard and there's obviously some natural talent in that band and and um yeah yeah we were inducted into the rock Rock and Roll Hall of Fame uh last year or two years ago deservedly so too very very influential well great work you've paved the way definitely so uh let's hear some more live music and I think you're going to do uh big big love for us now yes this is because this is the one we've been talking about yeah this is the single that's coming out on around March 10th and it was written by the great Diane Warren well we're giving her lots of interesting and deservedly so yes she was just nominated for her 14th Academy Award 14th Academy Award it's not bad you've got to admit it's never one though oh well this time this time definitely so let's have a listen to the new single it's big big love and once again here live in the radio 2 piano room it's Belinda Carlisle [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] I want did what I am looking for big baby [Music] potato [Music] ES the mind [Music] now I wanna [Music] I'm looking for a big [Music] news foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm looking for a baby [Music] [Music] [Music] life [Music] that's a lovely song big big love Belinda Carlisle singing life beautiful beautiful stuff and that's the latest single which you'll be performing on the tour I imagine no I'm not you're not I will after it's out honored absolutely honored thank you very much uh we've got a lot quite a lot of uh reaction already it's Keel here Belinda Carlisle is sounding amazing I see her every summer on the concerts that we go to oh yeah yeah the concerts and festivals yeah uh what a beautiful soft gentle and totally uplifting performance of Heaven is a place on Earth by the wonderful Belinda this morning says Stephen uh I could imagine listening to this while sitting watching the sunset maybe on a beach somewhere as the waves lap at the shore Ah that's nice he's in Halifax at the moment not that close uh and uh tell Belinda I can't wait to see her all her tour dates uh her big fan Ricky from Liverpool oh I know hi Ricky ah there you are yeah Ricky now we've got some other fans who are wanting to ask you questions our listeners have asked some questions if you're up for that yeah sure let's hear the first one good morning Belinda it's Stephen up in beautiful rural Halifax here and believe that you're singing um Superstar by the amazing Carpenters this morning and I just wondered if you were influenced by the Carpenters or anybody else for that matter in your childhood and that took you down your the particular musical Direction uh well I mean she had one of the you know all-time best voices ever so and yes I loved the Carpenters I loved her um I love the songs I wouldn't say my music was influenced by them but she certainly was one of my favorites growing up and I grew up in Southern California so it was a Beach Boys um the whole Laurel Canyon scene um you know the Philadelphia sound I mean I I was a mixed bag of everything yeah yeah and you know we all have influences or musicians of influencers but you know you can't always hear those influences now exactly yeah good to hear from Stephen again incidentally in there uh right let's see you in our next one hi Belinda this is Bev The Decorator from Carlisle could you tell me Belinda who is the nicest man in show business you have ever met the nicest man in Show Business um until today we can say it yeah yeah yeah James Nisbet yeah it's not the answer I was hoping for but never mind if whatever comes out is of all people Jackie Gleason right I remember meeting him and I was just really impressed he had a little red carnation and a gold cigarette case he was very Dapper yeah we we saw the series that he did um The Honeymooners that's it yeah it came over here maybe a couple of years later but that was late 50s early 60s so Jackie Gleason yeah I'd say yes what a star right shall we have another question hi Belinda this is Steve I'm a huge fan of both your music and of you I'm also a huge fan of Suzanne Hoffs I know you two are old friends and have sung together on various occasions but do you and Susanna have any future plans to sing together in England we have no plans at the moment but we I just don't know where she's really busy she has a book coming out and I'm busy with all this so right right so well it's something we we might get one day in the future yes definitely great to have both of you on a stage together yeah such great voices let's have one more from our listener hi Belinda it's Daniel Wix calling from Norwich when you perform live do you prefer singing your solo hits or the songs with the Go-Go's because the girl that goes numb really on a cult level you know I mean like songs like heaven that I've sung a million times and when you see the the joy that that song brings it it makes it really fun for me so I'd say people know the solo stuff much more than the Go-Go stuff yeah but uh yeah as you say songs like heaven they mean so much to so many people yeah it is it's lovely to see the reaction you'd get for that yeah we've got uh one final question for you which comes from yesterday's piano room performer and that's Louise my question to Belinda is what was the first record that you bought that I bought was Aquarius by The Fifth Dimension able that was the first single and then I bought Bobby Sherman all right you don't know who Bobby's a Teen Idol Bobby Sherman didn't make it over here I don't think that much but Fifth Dimension Fifth Dimension oh great Billy Davis Jr and Madeleine McCoo great singers great and yeah I think it was Hal Blaine on the drums on that one fantastic so anyway we've got one more song from I think we know what it's going to be but uh please tell us please tell us well this song like I said the Carpenters are a big part of my childhood and teenage years and this is one of my favorite songs ever written and I thought it was a big this big romantic song and it's actually not romantic at all when you find out what it's about and now let's let the listeners figure it out they will they should they should definitely research it yeah I think it's funny I was surprised a quick reminder that if you can get a ticket the decades tour continues in Birmingham this Friday plays across the country until February 25th and here to Showcase that fine song Here is Belinda Carlisle thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] long ago and also far away [Music] I fell in love with you for the second show [Music] your guitar [Music] but you're not [Music] it's just the radio [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hello there he's such a set of me [Music] to be with you again [Music] to make you come again [Music] [Music] don't you remember tell me about me baby baby [Music] [Applause] baby baby I'll be back [Music] [Music] absolutely beautiful very very nice absolutely fantastic thank you thank you so much Belinda it's been a joy having you here in the Piano thank you so much for having me absolutely wonderful thank you
