Edward Longshanks: The Braveheart Bad Guy

édouard the first known as Longshanks, for his uncharacteristic. Height was a man among men and, a king among, kings as, a child he was so sickly, that few thought he would survive, to even take the crown but take, it he dips immediately. Displaying, a strength and determination, that had been sorely lacking he quickly established his authority with ruthless suppression. Of rebellion earning, him the nickname the hammer of the Scots and, the adoration. Of all of England in this week's biographic. Sui get up close and personal. With the man who, was Edward. Longshanks the. King of England. Edward. The first future King of England was born at Westminster, Palace in London on June the 17th, 12:39. He was the first born son of King Henry the third and eleanor of provence henry was a great admirer, of previous, King Edward the Confessor, and named, his son in his honor Edward, was not a well child in fact he was so weak that the general consensus, was that he wouldn't survive into adulthood but, survived he did growing into an unusually. Tall and rather robust, teenager, he would eventually grow to a height of six foot two which allowed him to tower over most of his contemporaries it was his unusual, height which would lead soldiers, to refer to him as Longshanks. During, his formative years edward, was groomed to take the mantle of king he was educated by the best scholars and members of the clergy hero, became his physical, weaknesses, to become an able, wielder, of the sword and club as well as a keen student of the arts and languages at the age of 15 edward entered into an arranged marriage with a 13 year old eleanor, daughter of ferdinand, the third of castile the union was precipitated, by the, fear of a Castilian, invasion. Of the province, of Gascony, as part of their marriage contract, Edward received land grants worth fifteen thousand, marks annually, in taxation this, land covered much of Ireland, and Wales, however, the entitlement, that the teenage Prince had was only. In name, as the lands, were still controlled by his father and the income, generated, went not to him but rather to the raw left-hand. Monford, the 6th Earl of Leicester the Earl of Leicester was married, to the King's sister Edward, did benefit from the marriage Alliance on a more personal, level unlike the vast majority of such arranged unions, he and Alan and genuinely cared for each other and that fondness grew into a love that lasted, their entire lives. King. Henry was an extremely, pious man whose main focus as King was on building up the authority, and symbolism, of the, church he devoted himself to rebuilding, Westminster, Abbey putting his energies into this project at the expense of more, pressing, concerns, of state a series, of ill-advised, military, forays each of which ended in failure added fuel to the fire of discontent, with his reign among the nobility attempts, were made to usurp, the Kings authority and wrestle, power away from him the two most powerful noble, factions, at that time with a Salette and cologne, families, who were opposed to each other Henry pushed a policy of neutrality between, the camps in 12:55, however, the 16 year old Edward began siding, with the Soler family, this marked his first act of independence from his father in the following year and we began associating. With what was called the loose in your faction, made up of the half-brothers of his father who were a French origin, this group was largely, despised, by the nobility and had a reputation for being rather, uncouth, and violent, concerns. Were expressed in, the royal court over, the increasing wildness. Of Edwards conduct, when he was with the Lu seniors three, years later a body of nobles drew up a document known as the provisions, of Oxford which, spelled, out a series, of reforms designed to give the Barons much more say in the running of the Kings government the, Baron's were especially opposed, to the influence, of the loosen Yass relations.

Between Henry and his brother-in-law Simon, de Montfort had been strained from the very start Simon, had not sought the Kings permission for marriage to his sister Simon then proceeded, to amass, large debts, naming the King as guarantor, again, without his permission, Simon was at the forefront of the Barons efforts to bring reform, and the pressure imposed eventually, led to the Kings signing the provisions, he was now obligated to seek the counsel of his barons on matters, relating, to the governing of the kingdom as the pressure began to mount on his father Edward remains, loyal to his friends the loosin yawns and took a stance in opposition to the provisions of Oxford but as the reform movement grew in intensity, his, position it shifted, on October 12 59, he announced, that he was supportive, of the goals of the Barons and aligned himself with his father's rival Simon de Montfort in November, 12 59 King Henry embarked, on a voyage to France in his absence Edwards opposition, to his father a group he appointed several of the rebellious, barons to important, positions within the raw court when, news of this reached his father in Normandy he was convinced, that Edward was about to stage an overthrow he, quickly returned to London to reimpose, his position at first the outraged, Henry, refused to even see Edward but finally, the sort of peace was brokered, between them by the Archbishop, of Canterbury, it was decided that Edward was to go abroad which, he did at the age of 21, in November, 1260. He ended up in France where he fell in love with his old pals the Lucien Yuans. Meanwhile. In 1261, King Henry with the backing of the Pope in Rome overthrew, the provisions, of Oxford, they said the Barons to set up their own independent Parliament's, with civil, war looming this noble Parliament it was dissolved, and the noble rebellious, barons they, fled De Montfort himself I left the country but he returned two years later when, the heat had died down the one foot managed to raise a sizable, army and marched on London the, King vacillated, and seemed it ready to give, up his throne it was at this point that Edwards stepped up and began to take control of the situation any, hesitancy, he had previously shown in supporting his father's rule had vanished and he was now staunchly, determined. To restore the Kings dominance, he took control of the king's army and led them in defense of the realm the rebels were ousted from Windsor Castle a compromise, of sorts was reached thanks to the intervention of King bluey the 9th of France who negotiated, the agreements, known as the meze of Amir the, vase between the king and the Barons was short-lived in 1264. Hostilities, broke out once more with the onset, of what history recalls as the second, barons, war once, again the Barons were led by Simon, de Montfort while the forces, loyal to the king were buds of the control of the now 24, year old Prince Edward in the wake of a series of smaller victories, Edward's army met up with the forces of De Montfort at the Battle of Loos on may the 14th, 1264. Things, went, well for the royalist forces as they managed to force the London contingent, of the opposition into retreat but then Edward made the mistake of breaking, off with a portion of his army to chase down the Londoners, when he returned to the main scene of the battle his forces had, been defeated. Edward was taken as a prisoner and held until the following May when he managed to escape over the next few months the rawest forces, steadily wore down the resistance, army the most telling victory, was at the Battle of Evesham on August the 4th 1265.

The Baron's army was ravaged, with many of its leaders being, put to the sort Simon, de Montfort was himself killed, when a Lance was run through his body Edward, then allowed his soldiers, do mutilate, the body including cutting off the testicles, and hanging, them over de Montfort snows such, actions, were strictly, against, the protocol of war which stipulated, that Nobles were to be treated humanely, however, dead would consider de Montfort to be a traitor, and therefore, beyond the rules conduct the last of the rebels made a stand at Kenilworth Castle finally. Surrendering, in accordance with the terms of the dictum of Kenilworth edwards. Decisive, actions and leadership skills during, the barons rebellion, showed him to be a man of action who possessed, the courage ability, and personality to be a great king yes with the rebellion crushed and his father's rulership a shirt he put his focus on an upcoming crusade. King. Louie the 9th of France was planning a crusade to North Africa in order to defeat the Muslims in 1268. Edward left England with a force of around, 1200. Men along, with him was his wife Eleanor after crossing the channel and then the Mediterranean, they arrived at North Sarika you need to discover the French King was dead the result, of a fatal bout of dysentery, Edward, was now the leader of the allied force and he chose to withdraw the fleet to Sicily, however on routes a severe storm decimated, the fleet and the French contingent, decided, to return home rather, than following the French example, Edward decided to forge ahead he, landed at Accra on May the 9th 1271. The, Christian Empire in the Holy Land was under serious threat from the Muslim States with Jerusalem already having fallen in 1244. The Egyptian Mamluks were now threatening, to take Accra, which served as the Christian capital, with a relatively, small force, of men there was little Edward could do to stem the tide of Muslim aggression, the Mamluk warrior King Babar's, had tens, of thousands of men under his command before departing for home however it would played a part in the negotiation. The truce with Baybars once, the treaty was signed he, stayed for a period of time to ensure that its conditions, would be carried out one, night in September of 12 72 an assassin, entered the bedchamber of Edward and Elinor in order to attempt to thrust a poisonous, dagger into the princes on Edward, was able to fend off the attack and kill the assassin legend, has it that Alan, s sucked the poison from, her husband's arm thus saving his life. In. The. Wake of the foiled assassination, plot the royal couple they left the Holy Land upon sailing to sicily edward was given the news that his father the king had, died, edward had been weakened by the poison attack and so now as king of England's he and Eleanor his queen took a leisurely trip home the situation, back in England it was pretty stable so he didn't really see a need to rush back Edward. Made his way home through dirtily and then on to France crossing, the channel in early August of 1274. Edward, was officially, crowned King Edward the first on August the 19th 1274. At Westminster, Abbey when, the crown was placed upon his head a chronicler, reported, that Edward immediately, took it off again and stated, that he would only wear it again when all of the territory that was lost during the kingship, of his father was, returned the new king was 35, years old he was tall muscular and militarily. Adept, he was the man of action that his father had, simply not been you, see he enjoyed the roughest, and most dangerous forms, of hunting such as going after boars and wolves as a younger man he was prone to flying off the handle but age had, restrained his temper by the time he ascended to the throne he, had built a reputation as a loyal friends, and a devoted ruler, however he was also known as a hard man who could be harsh even cruel in the furtherance. Of his own will Edwards, reign it was not going to be a continuation, of his father's week and lenient, rule he immediately set, about re-establishing the dominance, of the crown his other power was son questions, but he saw that in order to retain power he had to institute policies that were popular with the people determined, to prevent a repeat of the civil war that had scarred his father's reign he made lasting, provision, for the lower classes to be represented, in Parliament this, established, the basis of the House of Commons which, today is the predominant, house, in the English political system.

During. First years of his reign Edward focused primarily on streamlining, and reforming, the administration, of his government he then turned his attention to the situation that was occurring in Wales the Prince of Wales luanne in-app CRIF a.m. had been handed the title by King Henry the third in return for agreeing to pay homage to the English crown, Llewelyn however had been an ally of Henry and Edward's enemies Simon de Montfort and set about conquering of the Welsh kingdoms, and was now threatening, to move against England itself edward acted preemptively, leading a force of 10,000. Across the Welsh border however Llewellyn's, unpopularity, at home prevented, him from raising, a sizable army to counter the English invasion in fact, as his army moved up the Welsh countryside Edwards, forces, were strengthened. By the addition, of local Welsh armies who were opposed, to Llywelyn among, those who joined Edward was Llewellyn's, own brother defeat the, upstart was soon deposed and Edward claims large swaths, of Welsh territory, as his own he rewarded a fit by giving him a small parcel of lands now was not pleasing to him and he felt that he deserved much, more for his service to the crown in 1282, defit led a revolt against, the king that was soon joined by his seething brother Llewellyn an angry, Edward responded by invading Wales a second time this time however he was determined to go all out with a three-pronged. Attack from the south east, and the north the English invasion was unstoppable resulting, in these stomping out of the rebellion, and the death in battle of Llewellyn for his party's effort was captured and executed edward. Consolidated. His victory in Wales by constructing, a series of castles, throughout the lands the most impressive was at Caernarfon it, was here that Edwards, son and future heir Edward ii, was born in 1284, the now vacant title of Prince of Wales was bestowed upon the child and since that time the heir to the British throne has, been given that title in a ceremony, that is held at conovan Castle when, it came to foreign relations, Edward did his best to maintain peaceful, relations, with his European counterparts despite, the fact that Philip, the third of France was his cousin relations, between the two powers were under, constant tension when Philip died in 1285, Edward crossed the channel in order to pay homage to the new, French King Philip the fourth he did not return to England until 1289, spending much time in the Duchy of Gascony which, was one of his possessions in, 1287. Edward took the cross for the second time intending, to stage another far more successful, crusade, to retake the holy lands from the Muslims he knew that success, in this enterprise depended, on the stitching together of a truly international. European alliance towards, that end he expended, much effort trying to preserve, peace among the powers Edwards, long absence, from London had thrown the government into confusion, and chaos he, returned to discover the corruption, was rife and was forced in disgust, to expel many of his judges and ministers, all of them the 28th 1290, felon had died after suffering a protracted, illness that may have been malaria, she was just 48 years of age having spent 35, of them at Edwards side the king was distraught, at the loss of his wife he became a hardened, man in the wake of her loss more bitter and brooding. In nature. Edwards. Campaign against the well should imposed huge, financial burdens, upon its nation taxes, were the main way to meet those expenses, and a prime source of that taxation were the Jews of England Edward tax the Jews far more heavily than any other group in 1279, he ordered the arrest of all the heads of Jewish households, throughout the country about 300. Of them were put to death the following year all Jews were ordered, to attend special sermons, preached by Dominican, friars in order to convert, them to Christianity then, in 1290, Edward issued the Edict of expulsion by which all Jews were kicked out of England it wasn't until 16 56 that the Jewish ban in England was finally, lifted. From. 1290, onward Edwards attention was focused on troubles in Scotland following the death of Alexander the third in 1286, Scotland's, was governed in the name of his granddaughter, Margaret, King Edward had made the suggestion that his eldest surviving son Edward, of Karneval Margaret, should be united, in marriage bringing, about the union of England and Scotland before, this could happen though Margaret, died the Scottish throne was. Now in dispute with a number of claimants the English King was asked to play the role of arbitrator, and Edward, agreed but on the condition that the claimants, accept him as their overlord in 1292, he awarded the throne to John Balliol who was crowned as the new king it didn't take long however for the Scottish people to resent, the jurisdictional, control that Edward held over their country John was deprived of all his power and the Scots formed an alliance with France by, this time England's relations, with the French had deteriorated things, had come to a head when Philip the fourth refused to restore the Duchy of Gascony to, Edward, in 1293, Edward, declared war on France at the very time that the Scots had united with Scotland to make a bad situation worse, the Welsh chose this time to rise in rebellion King, John of Scotland gathered his forces in, March of 1296.

Edward, Mustered, his forces and again marched into battle many Scottish Nobles including Robert the Bruce sided, with Edward whose first, target city was, the City of Berwick it, turns into a brutal, massacre, of the Scots with many people being killed next, target was the castle at Dunbar despite. Having the higher grounds the Scottish defenders, were routed on April, the 27th, 1296. The Scottish army was virtually, wiped out allowing, Edward to quickly, take a succession. Of castles, all that remained was for King John to surrender on July the 2nd John sent a pleading letter to Edward begging forgiveness and, mercy, Edward, accepted, but only after subjugating, John to a series, of humiliations. Including, having the Scottish coat of arms torn from his sir coat he was then thrown into the Tower of London but, Edward wasn't finished with Scotland's, he was determined to stamp out any vestiges, of Scottish independence and, to absorb its people into the English Kingdom he demanded oaths of fealty from all Scottish Nobles, magnates. And either refused to do so were hunted down as outlaws. After. Conquering the Scots Edward returned south he now had to focus on issues with the French, however the masses in Scotland were not ready to subject, themselves to the heel of Edward Longshanks resistance. Grew under three divergent. Leaders in the southwest Robert the Bruce emerged as the head of a gathering of nobles and church leaders in the Northeast the struggle, was spearheaded, by Andrew, Murray and in the center of the country forces. Were being gathered, by an obscure, member of a noble family named, William Wallace in 1297. Wallace, murdered the English sheriff of lanark William de historic, this act United, the disjointed, pockets of resistance into, a full-blown. Rebellion, two, months later with the situation, reaching a crisis, point Edward, was forced to send his left tenants, in to deal with the situation, meanwhile, he had his own battle to fight in Flanders, in France, even, though we didn't want his conquest, of Scotland to run Ravel he also knew that abandoning, planned French invasion would only strengthen. The rebels hand as, things turned out the British underestimated. The strength of the Scottish resistance what, appeared to be a Scottish, attempted, and negotiated. Surrender, was in fact a ruse to allow Wallace more time to gather his army with his army strength and Wallace managed to push the English from five per share and Dundee the climactic battle occurred at Stirling, Bridge the, English outnumbered, the Scots six to one but when the leader of the first vanguard, hugh decreasing, him was reputedly, struck down by wallace himself thousands, following turn and fled while this went on to exploit the terrain and generally, outmaneuver, the british to win a resounding, victory, Wallace quickly led his ever-growing forces. To overthrow, the remaining English outposts, in Scotland he then crossed the border and invaded English territory after taking Northumberland's. He reached as far south as Cockermouth, with this it, was time for Edward to take control of the situation personally, in 1298, the king's army gathered Roxburgh, with the king joining, them in early July he marched north with 17,000. Men by now Wallace had returned to Scotland Edward was determined, to hunt him down though Wallace, however he was not keen to engage the King and drew the monarch further north the Scots had stripped the lands leaving the English with no food and a stretched-out supply, line with his army disintegrating. Edward had a stroke of luck when, intelligence. Was received that Wallace and his men were stationed, far Kirke about 20, miles away the King immediately set his army and the erection of our the, Scots they were surprised, but they were in a strongly, entrenched position, in the end though the strength of the English infantry, and cavalry assaults, was too much for the Scottish army and they were torn to pieces while. It's managed to escape and let pockets of resistance for, the next seven years but, the English they were able to re-establish dominance. Over Scotland in 1305. William, Wallace was finally, captured by the English it was taken to London where it was hung drawn, and quartered. However. This wasn't the end of the Scottish problem for Edward in 1306. Robert the Bruce assassinated. Rival for the throne which had been vacant for 10 years, he then had himself crowned King, of Scotland he was quickly defeated in battle with the English after which he went into hiding only to return in 1307, to conduct hit-and-run, raids on English fortresses, Edwards, now in failing health was still determined to bring up this latest, Scottish, rebel to heal he again gathered his army and headed north on the journey to Scotland however the King contracted, dysentery on the morning of July the 7th 1307.

He Died just a few miles short of the Scottish border it is said that he left instructions with his son for the flesh to be boiled from his body and his bones to be preserved, then every, time the Scots should rebel against him his son would carry with him the bones of his father instead, his body was taken back to London where it was placed in a plain tomb in Westminster, Abbey 700, years later that, tomb is still on display reminding. He killed my great great great great great great great great great great great Grandfather!

You left out the Eleanor Crosses. She died somewhere in the north so her body had to be moved back south to be buried in London. Edward wanted this done as quickly as possible so they rushed her south but had to stop 12 times. Edward then had a cross erected at each of these sights as 12 monuments to his departed loved one. I think only 3 of them still stand today.

Why do you kept saying British place names wrong....Berwick is pronounced berik not bur-wick

Please make a video about Louis XIV.

Mr. Whistler, the correct term for the past tense of when someone is suspended by a rope around their neck until dead is, "hanged" not, "hung".

You ended this excellent video too soon. You should have continued to the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 when the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce soundly beat the English under Longshank’s son, Edward Il.

What is that incredible statue at 12:36?

VSauce what happened

You should make a video about Heinz Guderian.

Tell Me... What advice would you offer on the present SITUATION......??????!!!!!!!

15:55 "At the very time that the Scots had united with Scotland".

Too many haters here I suspect hungup on Mel Gibson's tale. Braveheart won academy awards for best picture, director and cinemotography (from you know from all the homophobes/antisemites in Hollywood) not because it was very realistic, just entertaining escapism. Same way I enjoy a Roman Polanski movie, Woody Allen or Harvey Weinstein production. I just forget the personal lives and get lost in the imagination for which was paid.

Donald Trump's ads are always on your vids.

14:30 - 14:37 & 14:45 based

Edward Longshanks a guy so famous the only reason we care about him is because he's the enemy of William Wallace

When that have been crazy if they actually did boil him to bones.

As 'decimated' these days seems to have multiple meanings, you should stop using it.

I've got a longshank

11:36 Do you say Homage or (H)omage? How do you pronounce it? I pronounce it similar to the latter ‘ohmage’

Middle east politics 1200s edition.

You should be Tim McVey

Another phenomenal video. I could listen to Simon read the phone book (remember those?). ALL DAY

Teenage Rebellion is way more dangerous when your the son of a monarch.

Another great video, Whistler. Keep up the good work!

Your Avatar's hilarious!

According to records, William Wallace was indeed "drawn and quartered". Whether or not he was "hung" is likely a subject on which very few people could testify. He was however "hanged" along with the preceding other forms of punishment.

He wouldn't remain "hung" for long after capture. Rumour is Edward liked to have a chap's wedding tackle removed.

14:50 yo Edward is a man after my own heart. Except he waited too long to bring the Jews back. You borrow 300 gold from the Jews, expel them, then welcome them back on your next ruler, repeat ag nausium. (Ck2 memes, no antisemitism intended)

It's almost like my last name is relevant for once... (Except, ya know, Wales sorta lost.)

2:00 who drew that? LOL

I love English history.  it's so fascinating.

Didn't Robert the Bruce eventually defeat the English army?

Can you please do one on the Swamp Fox (Francis Marion) ?

19:24 looks like FDR

What the horse? Anyways i like truman over fdr, he did a better job

Too much is just too much! Calling a rabid bloody AntiSemite an impressive English monarch is truly INSANE!

Oy Vey!

Because an English monarch in the 13th century's duty is to the Jews. Right. You gottta be trolling.

Evil minds like his are "no big deal", for most people, unless you're the one on the short end of the stick!

When the Scots united with Scotland?

Cockermouth and you kept a straight face kudos to you sir

He was a bad ass king...

The pronunciation of many English and Scottish towns is just awful

A marvelous king for the English translates to a vicious tyrant to the Welsh and Scots. And I rather wish you had completed the description of the treatment of the Jews by explaining what happened to their property.

Lol Cockermouth

Damn you murdered the Welsh name! Llewelyn (not even going to try an explain what you got wrong there but since it isn't a sound in English I suppose I'll forgive you) ap (well done you got the two letter word perfect, incidentally this mean of as in son of) Gruffudd (pronounced Griff-ith ... more or less, again technically it isn't a sound in English but th is good enough... you know like name Griffiths ;). A U in Welsh is prounounced like an E, I or Y in English.

The real bad guy was Mel Gibson

Queef

One you should do is Major General Patrick Cleburne, the Irish Private from the Royal Army who became the best Division Commander in the Confederate Army, opted for freeing the Slaves in exchange for their fighting for the South, and generally scaring the religion back into the North.

Dom Pedro I, first Emperor of Brazil PLEASE

When you go so far south that you reach cockermouth, there’s really no need to go further

Can you please do Otto Skorzeny?

"The trouble with Scotland... ...is that it's full of Scots."

+Douchestin Source? The last article I can find said Scotland took in 2,000 Syrian refugees, our population is over 5,000,000, that's 0.04% of the population, so if you could either delete your retarded comment or tell me which racist forum you got your info from that'd be nice.

PhantomFilmAustralia now it’s full of immigrants

LOL - Cockermouth

History is always written by the winners. Hard to hear this from an English guy. Lol joking

The amount of research and preparation put into these videos combined with Simon's engaging style of presentation make this channel into so much more than just biographies! I notice you delve into some lesser-known details about your subjects, and I always learn something new. Bravo.

all these mentions of 'the British', britian didnt exsist for another few hundred years, christ how can he not know this

The trouble with Scotland is that it's... ___________ .

Wow, the Scots United with Scotland 15:55. Who was more confused? The Scots or Simon?

Cool channel !! Do Johannes Gutenberg ! The father of printing presses

Has there been a bio made of william wallece. Sorry if my spelling is wrong

Liked this video for the solution to the Jewish question.

How much did mum get from that picture.?

Ber-wick? How long has Simon been out of Britain?

Your pronunciation of a lot of the the names and places is awful "Berwick" for example is said like an American. Don't do any videos with "Warwick" or "Daffyd" in them. I really saddens me that these videos are so targeted at Americans and that they are so full of misinformation and mispronunciation.

You need to do a video about Prince Edward, the Black Prince. He was a major figure in the wars against the French and was the great grandson of Edward Longshanks.

I had a difficult time watching the video because I kept focusing on the white piece of lint on the left side of Simon's vest. I kept hoping someone would notice and flick it off.

I get the same sinking feeling at 2:00 that I got when I saw moto moto for the first time, I know this is going to become an unsatisfying and yet popular meme... not if but when.

Brave hearts antagonist you surely meant within the title? King's are nothing special! They are born into their place no better nor different than a Worm born under the great weight of a Rock!

The Welsh asked for a prince that could not speak English to be their prince and Edward I invested his infant son (who was so young that he couldn't speak at all) with the title of prince of wales.

One of the best channels on YouTube

Did Prince William go through this ceremony

If I may request, Hank Williams would make an interesting video.

He was named after Edward the confessor, England's saintly king. He is the first French descended English King with an English name ever.

What's with all the soddin adverts?Christ, every 10-15 seconds of the same crap

Braveheart is one of my favorite movies. I had my family tree done and found out Edward 1 is in my tree. No wonder I am an asshole

Was that bit about him throwing his son's homosexual lover out a window to his death true in the least?

Dude I bet the Scots don't like this video. They still have pictures of Wallace all over the damn place and don't take kindly to even light criticism of him.

The poison wasnt the only thing she sucked tho lmao

Heheh... heheh... He said "Cockermouth"... heheh

Now do Francisco Franco.

Was Edward's son really gay or was that just in the movie?

Edward Longshanks would make for a good porn name

The "West" SHOULD have come to aid of Finland in1939 and helped more than "bloody the nose" of the Bolshevics...!!!!

I'm wondering what "the Scots united with Scotland" at 15:57 is supposed to mean? That the group unified? But that would be "the Scots unified", and "with Scotland"part of the sentence is confusing and meaningless. But I'm also wondering if that was supposed to "the Scots unified with France", the frequent ally?

Age of Empires 2 anyone ?

Great video--nice to learn about the figure without the "English baaaad!" swerve.

Wasn't he also the inspiration for the character of Bittersteel from A Dance with Dragons?

The problem with Scotland, is that it is full of Scots.-Longshanks

He probably said the same about us Welsh, the prick.

The Jews were expelled for their Blood Libel Rituals. Just saying.

You need a Pinochet episode.

“Nobody thought Mel Gibson could play a Scot but look at him now! Alcoholic and a racist” – Frankie Boyle

You guys should do Carlos Hathcock .

Your pronunciation is awful, Balliol, Berwick, Lanark, Falkirk etc. And British? You mean English. And earlier the “English Parliament" is the British Parliament! I love your videos, but please, get the details right!

Long shanks. Medieval porn star?

Who else laughed at Cockermouth?

Why do you mispronounce English & Scottish place names?

Please cover William Wallace

The man created the House of Commons,he wasnt that bad of a guy. Hollywood butchered that whole story!

Having a huge debt and terrible economy? Simple solution: Kill the Jews, seize their assets and ban them from your land. One of the worst recurring themes in medieval history.

You look like the X Ambassadors front man

18:33 British? You mean English

Would you do a video on General Charles "Chinese" Gordon?

He wasn't even the tallest king in English history

Nice try with the Welsh names, they're not easy, so you were brave to attempt them. Just a heads up, in Welsh a "Double DD" is pronounced as "th", so "Davidd" is pronounced "Dah-vith, not "Dah-veed". Gruffudd" is pronounced "Gruh-futh", not "Griff-eye-an", it's where the surname "Griffiths" comes from :D

Sorry Simon but Mel Gibson would not lie to us. Scotland is free because of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. The 90's were all facts

Its called the battle of Lewes (pronounced Lewis), not the battle of Loos...lol. Just saying.

Most impressive anti-Semites.

Sad how historically inaccurate “Braveheart” is.

Don’t let the truth get in the way of an excellent movie!

Eww imagine living in a time where disintery killed the king of France

Love.  Please do more English monarchs, especially their wives. And Russia's Catherine the Great, please.

Gotta say Edward has snazzy hair in his old English portraits

He pulled an Oregon Trail?!

Might I suggest Kurt Cobain or Dave Grohl?

Can you do Freddie Mercury please

"hmmm they look quiet optimistic, maybe they do want to fight" - best braveheart quote ever

At 2:55 I caught the impossible cover, wonder if the artist got punished for that error, or has it ever even been noticed.  Look at the 4 pole bearers and the way each is connected to the cloth above.

With a name like Longshanks, no wonder his wife fell in love lol

Simon as a Brit your pronunciation of British place names is almost american. Evesham (Eve-sham) not Eversham, Berwick is Berrick as the w is silent similar to Warwick or Norwich, The a in Falkirl is long as the a in all. But the House of Commons in the English Parliament? Don't you mean the British Houses of Parliament?

Can you do a Video on Aneurin Bevan? Founder of the NHS. Love all your videos guys!

Longshanks is a pretty legit male pornactor name. How about Fernando Longshanks

AFRICAN EXPLOYERS VICTORIA FALLS

Y’all should watch Outlaw King, it’s actually really good but you will be seeing Chris Pine’s dick just warning y’all

Hindu and Islamic scholars, please.

I would love to see you guys do a video on Davy Crockett, the frontiersman turned politician turned freedom fighter.

"What advice would you offer on the current situation?" *throws dude out the window

We Scots have NEVER united with Scotland! 15:56

Maybe do one on Christopher Hitchens?

now a video of robert the bruce!

Edward's son was born in Wales because as part of the agreements after the Welsh rebellion Edward promised that he'd only give the title of Prince of Wales to someone who didn't speak English and had been born in Wales something his son fitted as he was born in Caernarfon Castle and as a baby didn't speak English because he didn't speak at all yet, thus, Edward cleverly kept his word but got the outcome he wanted. Evesham is my home town and it's Eve-sham not ever sham no r it's a English town getting it right shouldn't be hard.

How about one on Robert the Bruce and his try and try again attitude?

The Princes of Wales (The Welsh equivalent of King) are also very interesting stories.

That's my quote on Ned kelly the Australian outlaw

Who are you quoting?!

+mezsh he got Derby wrong in another video, he is British ffs

same with a few of the Scottish place names too, shame really seems lazy when the rest of the contents so good

I'll forgive him for the bad Welsh pronunciations, as they are exremely difficult if you don't know the language and/ or sounds, but yes, he goofed on Berwick.

Myriaddsystems According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary obligated is a word so maybe he’s speaking American English and that’s why his pronunciation of all the English and Welsh and Scottish towns is apparently terrible.

Mrs Bishop's Doggy Deli add to it the strange pronunciation for Lewes.

And the Welsh! We have the unfortunate privilege of being the very first "English" colony. ;(

Love, LOVE your videos!  They are perfect for quick briefs.  I really enjoy that!

18:47... Teee Heee!

So many mistakes, terrible pronunciation, and calling Edward "impressive"? Terrible video.

15:55 Edward declared war on France at the very time the Scots had united with Scotland?!?!?

He took their FREEEEEDOMMM

Ludwig van Beethoven? Anyone???

Well, the Scots were given the option to leave and voted to stay Longshanks: 2 Wallace: 0

Yes do william wallace

So, the house of commons in the predominant 'House in the English system'. Also your grasp of history is very poor, english history that you preach is awful. You should also learn some basic pronunciation and as ever england is British, not once but twice

Fun fact: he's actually Edward IV

1:58

Too much camera time is spent on your face...

No Andrew Murray that fought alongside Wallace is not a tennis player

Age of empires 2 brought me here

Most popular yt-er: *screams and says nonsence* -million views biographies: saying things that are usuful- couple k views le world is wow

You have once again returned to the horrible grammatical error of repeating pronouns (which are IN PLACE OF NOUNS) when you have already used the nouns (either common or proper nouns). Please stop doing this! Get an ordinary English teacher/tutor to review the scripts—please!!

dude as a Welsh man hearing you butcher the prince's name makes my blood run cold lol

can you the Hawaiian historical monarchs.

Anyone else find it interesting that every great man or infamous man seemed to have one thing in common? A hatred of ((them))

I feel like Simon's anglocentricity showed a little in this video.

What's up with Edward's nose in these paintings? Did the artwork degrade or did someone cut off his nose at some point? I'm mostly descended from Scottish, Irish and English. I've never visited the land of my ancestors, but you have to admire the tenacity of both the Scots and the English. I for one think it's more important to be resilient and gritty than anything else. Many in America would rather be post-modern and glorify lowering standards and barriers to allow for more inclusion. Without tough standards, toughness is difficult to engender. Without toughness, it's only a matter of time and circumstance before everything falls apart.

Your pronunciations are terrible

#proceed

Harry s. Truman

Sorry. I missed the part about burning civilians alive. How many times did he exterminate an entire village by surrounding and incinerating everything without warning? Longshanks referred to his stupid sideburns,

Just think what Gascony would be like now as a part of the UK.

Impressive monarch... but still a traumatized asshole monarch. I'd have hated his guts too... As usual a like from me buddy!

I would recommend you do Bob Denard, the last dog of war, a Mercenary who's coup operations outed Zanzibar president 3 times and he was involved in more than 7 coups around the world in 9 different countries.

Edward was my favorite king because he expelled the Jews. I wish the Queen could do that today.

I wondder what he would have made of jews that live in Scotland now also.

Hey Simon, you should do a video about Dante Alighieri

I've got a few suggestions: MALE Freddie Mercury Elton John Christopher Hitchens I.K. Brunel Michael Jackson FEMALE Queen Elizabeth I Julie D'Aubigny Marie Curie Rani Lakshmibai Rachel Carson

Please do a video on Alan Watts

No, the Edict of expulsion cannot be rescinded, only ignored.

Just a small sugestion : Could you put a little roadmap so we can understand the family tree if it's complicated, or the timeline and events. No need to make it big, a semi-transparent one maybe.

wow, glad there are so many people like biographic things, i thought i was weird ...

I would love to see you do a video on Peter the Great.

@callsign_hotel lmao

Thanks for the idea

Please do a video on Edward III and Philip IV of France.

Stilico and Alarik

Edward "Lannister" Longhsanks.

"In the morning I depart for France to press our rights there..."

Bonny Prince Charlie next please

Richard the Third?

Did Longshank, the coca snorting porn king, know him?

Aye, opened his casket, Stole his Ring mmm

Killing the jews before it was cool...

Nice way to obscure the absolute sadism of Longshanks, which was the primary feature of his personality. Would you be as cavalier in a story about Joseph Stalin?

erm next time please research your Welsh pronunciations (and some others I think!0

*Hears English accent* Ah, here we go. This won't be biased at all. *Finishes watching video* Well, I wasn't wrong.

I'd be interested to know how British / Scottish people today regard the events of Braveheart. Hollywood is a poor history teacher.

dang marring kids, sometimes ancient people are messed up.

Do one about hightower from police academy

+USERZ123 so...Longshanks: 3 Wallace: 0

that's cuz they thought they would be staying in the EU. if there is another referendum they would vote to leave, they are juked by the English lol.

How much did mum get from that picture.? Sitting on that rocking chair.........

VERY much in the movie (its one of the most appalling travesty historically innacurate films made) as he fathered children including King Edward 3rd.

He expelled the Jews from England. Best king ever.

Danny Dyer and Prince Charles are both related to Edward III, not a lot of people know that.

OMG.. da joos, he was like another Hitler!

*1:56* no wonder the scots were beating him in braveheart, someone with eyes like that id make sure I was far away when he stated swinging his sword...….

"the British underestimated the strength of Scottish resistance" erm, what? You understand what Britain is right? And when it was formed?

Funny, I didn't think I'd end up liking this guy.

Czar dusan was taller I think.

Bah this is coma inducing. Where is the part where he throws the girly boy out the window??

I thought Simon was British. How can you mispronounce both Falkirk and Berwick?!?!?!

+Debra Combs That 'freedom fighter' William Wallace had his own atrocities such as burning schools full of children alive! Laughing while monks were drowned. Raiding, raping and pillaging and ethnic cleansing marked his progress across North of England even Scottish chroniclers realized there was a problem with Wallace. He took credit and stood on the shoulders of Andrew Moray a Barons son who was the true mastermind of the battle of Stirling bridge who died of his injuries. And he had gibbets placed in every Scottish town to prevent backsliders and as a sign of his ruthlessness. There's even a record of him and an Englishman stealing a keg of ale from a ladys house. Hence why all of this is'nt shown in the movie. A nice way to obscure the absolute sadism of Wallace, which was the primary feature of his personality. Its behaviour worthy of ISIS. Since you apply a modern context to the 13th century past. Whereas Longshank's legacy is felt today as he used his 'absolute power' to get rid of corrupt sheriffs, politicians, bureaucrats and to setup a cabinet and parliament (he was effectively saying ''you shouldn't be afraid to ask me anything you want'' which lessens his absolute power. It was the beginning of self government) which is still used today and he administered to the state and become one of the most devoted king statesman in British history. Bearing in mind the brutality of Edward was normal for kings and clergy in that feudal period. Wallace on the other hand shocked an age hardened to brutality. And his legacy is wrapped in lies, omissions, misconceptions exaggerations and romanticism by Blind Harry who was paid to write it all nearly 100 years after him for propaganda, By the Scottish nobles who were opposed to a peace treaty with England and wanted to be Wallace's descendants.

+Jeremy Brookes You cannot compare a King with absolute power to a freedom fighter.

no more sadistic than Wallace as they were products of their time.

+BobaFettGaming exactly. It was put into the movie to make you hate Longshanks to a ridiculous extent.

+Jeremy Brookes Its a quote from the movie that he never said in real life.

Or maybe it was made up by Mel Gibson in the movie for dramatic effect to make you hate him. Primae Noctis never happened in British history its a myth rather like the chastity belt.

Lewes...pronounced Loo-wis...like the detective, if you please...thanks... ps - I always thought Evesham was pronounced Eevesham?

BET HE WOULD DELIVER BREXIT,

Edict of Expulsion, so he could raise taxes.....a robber barron, turned robber king.

The Crusade  =  religious ignorance and racism.

I think Braveheart was directed by Mel Brooks, not Mel Gibson.

They should have had Danny DeVito play Longshanks in Braveheart as an ironic gag.

John Denver sometime, maybe? Or even Ozzie and Harriet!

Such a different opinion to those of English historians Lucy, Mary Beard, Dan Snow, and the one with blonde corkscrew hair. None of them are shy of telling their theories regarding the torture of Edward and his sons,

It's a pity that such a good presentation is spoilt by small things like the presenter not knowing what 'decimate' means, but uses it instead of 'destroyed' and I've no idea who told him about the pronunciation of 'Gruffudd", which is "Gryffyth" and not that strangulated noise that he made.

Edward I think is the most misunderstood king of England,  his job was to protect the English throne  from outside forces.

Lol @ ure pronounciation of Caernarfon and Berwick

Scots often walk past the Lang Shanks grave , spit in the ear and whisper "We're still here ya bastard, wir still here."

Time to listen to Sabaton.

JOIN THE SCOTTISH REVOLUTION, FREEDOM MUST BE WON BY BLOOD!

Not to mention Lewes, Evesham and Caernarfon...

All the scots i know hate the eu so dont bet on that.

junior or senior ?

As a perdomitly Cherokee man I want to pose as a half asian man in the porn industry... My name will be Hung Lo.

I think Robert the Bruce is still here, but calling himself Billy Connelly. Or at least related.

Wallace was betrayed at the battle of falkirk still say longshanks was an arsehole. good video but

cockermouth

Edward LongWanks

C'mon--I mean, c'mahhhhn! Cockermouth? Really? Nobody else? hahaha WTF INGERLUND?

Thanks for expelling all those (((merchants))) for coin-clipping, Your Majesty.

So Edward I came after Edward the Confessor!

You guys totally missed the part when WW banged that French Princess and made her prego.

Typical of English presenters this man lets his ethnic bias against the Scots lead him into lying about history. The point at which he loses credibility is when he starts the subject of the Scottish Succession problem. First there was no plan for Edward's son to marry Margaret of Norway. It was against the laws of Scotland for the monarch to marry the male heir of a foreign kingdom. This is partly due to the Celtic legal basis of Scots Law in which the female line was treated as of great importance. In the past decent through the mother was more important than the male line. Second, the Kingdom of Scotland predates the establishment of the kingdom of England. It was listed in treaties and recognised by the Papal legates as a distinct and special part of the Church. This fact meant so long as the Scottish Church existed there was no chance an English King could rule both countries. The result being Edward could imprison Balliol and occupy Scotland but never legally claim possession. The next problem for him being the Scottish king was titled "King of Scots" not "King of Scotland". This is another decent from Celtic Law. The King did not own the country as in England but claimed the legal right of administration, tax and military dues. He could be replaced which is what happened. Third, England had zero authority over Scotland. All claims were fraudulent but as always English people ignore the facts of Scots law. What happened was that surprisingly there existed good relations at the time between England, Scotland and France. Some have said it was comparable to the relations between the USA and UK today. So you can understand it being seen as acceptable to invite in Edward as an arbitrator in the case of succession. England's behaviour afterwards was seen as a disgusting betrayal of a friendly neighbour. Edward was legally opposed by the Scots, the Church and the vast majority of the nobility who were not the small list of grand nobles who English people always refer to as " The Nobles ". Almost all Scots owed loyalty leaders directly decended from the older Celtic clann system which had been simply rebranded with feudal titles. Only a few were new creations between these and the level of the King. It was this narrow group that that had been inserted into the system, who supported Edward. All these factors meant that English occupation of Scotland had zero chance of long term success. But that never seems to stop ignorant English presenters completely distorting and lying about the period in an attempt to make themselves look better.

Baldy the boring

Catherine the Great

The white lint on your vest is driving me crazy.

21:21 "The British underestimated the strength of the Scottish resistance"? The usual mixing of England and Britain as the same thing. They aren't.

He rewarded him by giving him a parcel of land. Well thats a bit of an insult, how much land can you fit in a parcel? Not fucking much! And what can you do with a parcel of land anyway? Even if its a big parcel its basically a large box of soil.

And the Muslims were defeated, but little did anyone know that the fighting meant nothing because just 700 years later Europe would be willingly handed over to Islam.

His sentences, they're strange.

Nice title

I thought it was Mel Blanc of Bugs Bunny fame

+Jeremy Brookes You seem to be taking the words of contemporary English chroniclers regarding Wallace's atrocities, at face value. That is never a good idea. There is simply not enough evidence to cast the revolutionary as a villain, although I'm not necessarily disputing it ( it is certainly possible). By contrast, Edward's brutality IS well established. You stated, ' the brutality of Edward was normal for kings... in that feudal period.' I would agree, and yet he was STILL marked by his savagery. What does that tell us about him?

As an American, I agree with you. I want to know how the Brittish pronounce their locations not how an American would pronounce said locations.

Thank you very much; you needn't speak so fast!

This Edward guy sounds like the kind of fellow that Donald Trump would like us to think he is.

Wait. . . what happened to the part in the battle Falkirk where Longshanks has his archers fire after his soldiers had already engaged the Scots, killing hundreds of his own troops? That happened, right?

So he gave Hitler the idea?

Lots of problems with place name pronunciation, and the odd Welsh prince.

Normally, I give people a pass on words in languages they might not speak. But if I, as an American, can pronounce the Welsh better than someone from England? That's just scary, because everyone knows people from the US can't pronounce things

You can fluff Edward with your plummy accent all you like, fact of the matter is William Wallace kicked Longshanks' arse and sent him homeward to think again.

Pronounced “Berrick”, not ‘Ber-wick’

Edward declared war "just at the time the Scots united with Scotland." Eh?

Even the actual history of him paints him as a tyrant. Just saying.

But did he ever throw his son's "adviser" out the window?

Pls do Robert burns

Alba gu bràth!!

Monfort absolutely had the kings permission to marry his sister, he did borrow money with the king as guarantor without permission.

But Braveheart was an ironic gag. Great comedy is spoilt by adding such slap-stick & they were rolling in the aisles when I saw it

your pronunciation of names is as creative as ever! Burrwick? Dafeed?! LanArk? Great stuff as always though - thank you!

All those unfamiliar places - maybe a map would have helped.

Braveheart was such a steaming load of puerile crap that i never forgave Mel Gibson and never saw a movie of his since. Yes , Longshanks was a hard man but not quite the monster of that cheap flick

Cool, but you need to brush up on your pronunciation of place names, e.g. Evesham, Falkirk.

19'18": "Falkirk" pronounced with emphasis on the FIRST syllable "Fall-kirk" ("Fall" as in 'falling' or 'calling' or 'balling')... NOT with emphasis on 2nd syllable 'Fahl-kirk' (i.e. your pronunciation fahl with open 'a'),

18'33": Out-manoeuvre the ENGLISH... NOT the British!!! There was no union between Scotland and England at that time. It was England vs Scotland. To say the "British" would (after 1707) INCLUDE Scotland!

Can you do a show on kamehameha I. I just arrived back from Hawaii and I find the history fascinating. Lots of death and struggles between kings and queens on these beautiful islands.

Cockermouth. Who came up with that name. I wonder what passes for fun there

excellent video, but i can never understand why people get mixed up between whats British or English 11:15

Sounds like one of England's greatest kings.

Jesus how can he butcher so many British names?.

English heroes for oppressing and killing their lawful neighboring nations? Isn't this the same UK that maligns the Israelis for defending themselves against Hamas aggression? How well would Britain handles it if the Scots obtains long rage rockets and fired them at York? Wales, Scotland and Ireland should be free nations, not oppressed conquered regions glorifying the English Imperialism!

This is Edward IV.............you already stated that his father was a fan of King Edward the Confessor. There were 2 other edwards before we well.

He also expelled all the Jews from England so Jeremy Corbyn has adopted him as the new hero of Labour.

Couldn't finish this documentary because of this guy's determination to pronounce as many names as stupidly as possible.

Try Ulgham...pronounced Uffam.

Please do an video from the Scottish view point.

Great Vid's but......Born and raised in England? The accent sounds substantially English but the non English pronunciation of place names is baffling! What can be the cause?

WE ALL FORGETTING THE MONARCHS SPOKE FRENCH NOT MODERN ENGLISH THE REST WOULD OF SPOKEN MIDDLE ENGLISH

Berwick is pronounced ‘Berik’not Ber-wick.

Once England had Edward Longshanks, the hammer of the Scots. Now England has Teresa May,the hammer of the Scots ,Welsh,Northern Irish(mostly)and the European Union. Or as her friends call her-the putty in the hands of the E.R.G. and the D.U.P.

That's pretty hardcore. He wanted his son to use his skeleton as a boogeyman during war lol.

Just FYI: Dafydd is pronounced Dav-eth, not Dafed

0:41 Was Edward I a horse?

British?

Thank goodness Kings don't rule us today. They ruled by "Divine Right". Kings were dictators and got away with murdering whomever they pleased. Forced conversations by both Christians and Muslims. When does a God need a human to do ANYTHING? So many innocent people were killed. If they were Space Aliens, they want no part of the human race. Thank goodness for democracy.

Outmanoeuvre the British you say?? You mean English?

Please do Norman Borlaug

cool!

The Scots aren’t obviously loyal, apparently. M.

+3XXKeturah Yeah and they were coin-clipping, too.

Usury, which is a crime at both Canon and Common Law, was the reason for banishment.

How right you are, Cogi!

I always thought this dude was cool just because of his name, Longshanks just sounds awesome.

ITS EVESHAM NOT EVERSHAM....

You gotta do the Shermans from the civil war. Gen. Will Texumseh.

Why don't you speak about the impressive strength of Vladimir Lenin? Or Che Guevara?

Was there anything accurate in Braveheart at all?

Be honest...the real reason they called him ""Longshanks"" was do to his "long" "shanker'" isn't it???

8:13 Cor, Eleanor's a looker!

The real edward was one of England's greatest kingd.

I’m still going to pounce on the Motorola Razr when that sucker comes out

Great video

I've never known anyone to mispronounce so many places.

My gosh! Some of the pronunciations are a bit wide of the mark! And the Scots were fighting the ENGLISH army NOT the British Army. Britain as a political entity did not appear until the Act of union in the reign of James the 1st and 6th.

Very good video, I really enjoy these. One little point though : As a Welshman your Welsh pronunciation is not the best, Llewellyn & Dafydd , the DD is pronounced as a TH , and the Ll is pronounced differently to a single L

LOL. Typical fascist - the majority of people in Wales, Scotland, and northern Ireland want to remain in the Union with England. Try respecting self-determination and lobbing fewer missiles, mate. Why don't you sit down with a history book and learn about just how much grief Scotland in particular gave to England - to the point of acting as willing stooges to French invasion plans and attempting to destroy the north of England repeatedly - and the actual circumstances behind the Act of Union in 1707. But then again, that would require actual effort so I'm sure you'll continue to grumble ineffectually in YouTube comment sections about the evil English instead. How pathetic!

The Earl of Surrey delivered an arse kicking not to be forgotten for generations at Flodden (you know, one of the MANY times those loveable cuddly Scots tried to ravage northern England) - and you still managed to be bought and sold for English gold and entered into the Union in the end. 2014 must have been devastating for you, lol.

I thought I heard that but I figured it was just my mistake. So I am not crazy.

I'm sure he really cares that you think he's an arsehole.

The Ragged Fringe - I think Mel Gibson has Anglophobia. Have you seen that travesty of a film called The Patriot - same anti-English historical fiction as Braveheart.

Says the guy who was expelled from a horse's arsehole.

Edward was not a nice person. Rather than Edward Longshanks, I've known him as "Edward the Deceiver". He would consistently promise one thing, and then go back on his word. It's a great pity that he was not dispatched when he was a prisoner of Simon de Montforte. Simon learnt that the hard way, as did many others, including the last two Princes of the Cymru.

Im 6 foot 3. Now that's relatively normal. I guess im a giant in 1200s standards lol!

impressive? he was a butcher, even by the standards of that time.shame no one poured molten lead down his ear~~~

18:47 Cockermouth

Was Wallace a registered midget or just played by one in the film?

I love history but this is too much too fast, it may be o.k.In america, but in England we prefare it more slowly and with passion.

15:54 "At the very time that the Scots had united with Scotland."

So no big pointy sticks

It's pronounced Fall-kirk. Any "Brit" should know that.

*throws gay dude out window*

Scottish rebels have routed the garrison and murdered the noble lord

… and Berwick is pronounced "Berrick". Yes, it does matter :)

"Lewes" = "Lewis" for pronuncitation; Evesham = "Eva-sham". This is a very minor point, probably seems very petty, but these mispronunciations make me cringe. Pendantic of Wrexham.

Longshanks sounded like a very abusive little kid , with to much power, not a nice soul.I think Longshanks helped create permanent anti Jewish environment in the UK.

I have always wondered why Edward Longshanks was called King Edward I of England considering the fact that 2 centuries earlier, Edward the Confessor had been King of England. It's as if someone decided that the history of the Kingdom of England began with the coronation of William the Conqueror as King William I, thereby relegating William's predecessors to prehistory. That would make Edward the Confessor King Edward O. What king would want to be called "the Zero?"

+martin clegg I bet that what his wife yelled out every night he came at he with his Long Shanker?

No.

Yup. I've been wondering where on earth this guy comes from, I mean not to know some rather basic details.

One more example to show that "rightful king" is an oxymoron.

How is it possible that a pom can mispronounce Berwick (Be-rrik)? Learn to speak your own language Simon, you dork. You also failed to mention that Balliol and Bruce were actually English (Bruce was Earl of Essex), and that they spoke French Exclusively. The last Scottish King of Scotland being Alexander III (another Anglo Norman BTW). You also left out the Crusade for The Principality of Portugal where loyal Welsh fighters accompanying Edward became Portuguese nobility, thereby solving any potential recurrence of a Welsh independence movement in Edward's lifetime. The Elenore Crosses could also have scored a mention given how much emphasis you 0laced on their live for each other.

Well done .....

Cockermouth?

Why do you deliberately insist on the mispronunciation of the names of English, Welsh and Scottish towns? Tring to suck up to the Americans? Traitor!

Battle of Evesham ...Not pronounced "Eversham" but "EAVESHAM!" Where DID you lean your English history?

Often we have these strong, military genius kings- Edward I, Richard I- and their weak & greedy heirs undo everything they’ve done- Edward II, John.

If i was William Wallace id have to stop at cockermouth also just to see if the rumors were true

Does it have to do with the coming of age hazing of the local gentry? Oh dear. Oh dear dear dear...

I suppose anti-semetism was far more the rule than the exception in those days, but I still can't help thinking Edwards treatment of the jews made him a jackass. 19:02 Was something wrong with his nose or is that just damage to the painting?

if you have male pattern baldness, going egghead is not fooling anyone

The only thing he gave to Ancient British and the Scottish was ethnic cleansing and genocide , the king is dead rot in hell

12:47 heyyyy its my hometown :D

The Scots - always starting trouble that they couldn't finish , so ran crying to the French. The couple of battles the Scots did win wasn't down to thier skill , no eddy 2 lost bc he didn't wait for the other half of the army to turn up , The bridge was a decent victory tho, again it was more down to bad leadership than Scottish skill. But they're plan worked & I guess they had to win sometime ..

Whatya sayin boy! He was giant that consumed the anglish with lightnening out his eyes and fire balls from his arse!

He is blüddy anglish..fought das 'ow you lads do everything; to much talk an too fast..thas wot the lasses sez at any rate.. ;)

David Jackson Jackson I’m a Californian in America and this dude is speaking WAYYYYYY too quickly for me.

More like fellkirk..

And big gay al, the silly..!

I agree .....

Prounonced Werrackhasmanshistershire. But not like the local sauce..;)

Che was a terrorist and a sadist.

Britannia was a province of the roman empire at one point though. So it did exist prior to england.

Might aswel slaughter Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf again with those pronunciations of his

Not to mention the pronunciation of the Welsh names

Proud to have him as one of my ancestors!

Simon please!! I thought you was British???? Evesham! Berwick, Llewelyn and Dafydd ffs to name but a few of you poorly pronounced names!!!! I am an Englishman living in wales and you should know better! My wife (who is welsh) was really incensed by the lack of respect given to the welsh language you’ve showed in this video

Do a video on Mel Gibson and his lack of historical accuracy.

Your Hi Def skull is just too much.

You pronounced Lewes wrong!

"Longshanks"? That's what she said...

Is too!

+Binguh Bungah Nah

Traditionally Anglo Saxon Kings were not numbered. To differentiate between kings with the same name they were given an additional title/name, often after their death, e.g Edward the Elder - Edward the Martyr - Edward the Confessor. It was a Norman/European practice to number their Kings, dukes, etc. Following the Conquest, and for the next 250 years, English kings followed both traditions and had a number as well as a title/additional name. William I - William The Conqueror or William the Bastard William II - William Rufus (The Red) Henry I - Henry Beauclerc Stephen - Stephen of Blois Henry II - Henry Curtmantle Richard I - Richard the Lionheart John - John Lackland Henry III - Henry of Winchester Edward I - Edward Longshanks Edward II - Edward of Caernarfon

Well they was men involved in both things but no not really

Longshanks sounds like a good prison name.

I'm Scottish, but even I know that Lewes is pronounced Lewis and Evesham is pronounced Eevsham... and Balliol is pronounced Baliol... and Berwick is pronounced Berrick and so it goes on. Lanark is not Lan arc. Falkirk is pronounced Fall kirk and I won't even start on the massacre you've perpetrated on Welsh place names. The thing to remember about the Scots at this time is that, before the time of William Wallace, Scotland was not recognisable as a kingdom in the same way that England was. Indeed , there has never been a King of Scotland, only a King of Scots. The difference is that England was conquered by William the Conqueror, so it was all his, to apportion among his followers as he wished. Scotland was not conquered, but large tracts of Scotland were taken by Norman barons, such as the De Bruis family, who begat Robert the Bruce. These Normans were the greatest power in Scotland, but they did not really penetrate and certainly did not control the Highlands and they continually fought and killed each other over who should be king. Further, many of these Normans also had lands in England as well, so they owed a degree of feudal loyalty to the English crown anyway. That is why they turned to Edward 1 to settle the succession of the Scots throne. It was his desire to be the feudal overlord of Scotland that united Scotland, both the barons and common people, in their desire to form a recognisable independent nation state (vide The Declaration of Arbroath). Margaret Thatcher achieved much the same thing in the 1980s by trying to govern Scotland in a manner that can only be described as colonial. That is what has led to the creation of a semi- autonomous Scottish parliament and government which may well end up with Scotland becoming entirely independent, especially if the United kingdom leaves the EU.... and the lesson is that those who are ignorant of their own history, or just ignore it in the first place, condemn themselves to repeating it.

I was really hoping you said "...taketh he didth." Oh well.

As a Welshman, I cringed HARD at the pronunciations of Welsh names in this video. Cymru am byth

The pronunciation of welsh names ....no just no...go back learn to say them properly and report back :p

It's kind of like a McDonalds for history. Fast food history. Great for short attention spans.

with all due respect I realize it is problematic to judge 13th century people by 21st century standards but neither can you give them a pass being an apologist for a tyrant is pc but not correct the everybody is doing it argument has never worked for children so it does not for a king history judges him as a monster just like cromwell the truth is not kind nor is history sorry edward roast in hell

Is there a particularly good reason as to why you don't punctuate or capitalize?

Wallace an obscure figure, who perhaps murdered a Sheriff in an area he didn't live, who took credit for Stirling Bridge - actually won by Andrew Murray, then failed to win any battles at all ... was captured and hung drawn and quartered for treason ...

1144, Norwich. A twelve year-old boy was crucified and his side pierced at the Jewish Passover. His body was found in a sack hidden in a tree. A converted Jew, called Theobald of Cambridge, confessed that the Jews took blood every year from a Christian child because they thought that only by so doing could they ever obtain their freedom and return to Palestine; 1160, Gloucester. The body of a child named Harold was found in the river with the usual wounds of crucifixion. Sometimes wrongly dated 1168. (Recorded in Monumenta Germania Historica, vol. VI (Erfurt Annals); Polychronicon, R. Higdon; Chronicles, R. Grafton, p. 46.) 1192, Winchester. A boy crucified. Mentioned in the Jewish Encyclopaedia as being a false charge. Details lacking. 1232, Winchester. Boy crucified. Details lacking. (Mentioned in Hyamson’s History of the Jews in England; also in Annals of Winchester; and conclusively in the Close Roll 16, Henry III, m.8, 26.6.1232.) 1235, Norwich. In this case, Jews stole a child and hid him with a view to crucifying him. Haydn’s Dictionary of Dates of date 1847, says of this case, “They [the Jews] circumcise and attempt to crucify a child at Norwich; the offenders are condemned in a fine of 20,000 marks.” (Further authority Huillard Breolles, Grande Chronique, III, 86; also Close Roll, 19 Henry III, m.23.) 1255, Lincoln. A boy called Hugh was kidnapped by the Jews and crucified and tortured in hatred of Jesus Christ. The boy’s mother found the body in a well on the premises of a Jew called Jopin or Copinus. This Jew, promised by the judge his life if he confessed, did so, and 91 Jews were arrested; eventually 18 were hanged for the crime. King Henry III himself personally ordered the juridical investigation of the case five weeks after the discovery of the body, and refused to allow mercy to be shown to the Jew Copinus, who was executed. 1276, London. Boy crucified. (Authority: The Close Roll of the Realm, 4, Edward I, m.14, 3.3.1276.) 1279, Northampton. A child crucified. Haydn’s Dictionary of Dates, 1847, says of this case: “They [the Jews] crucify a child at Northampton for which fifty are drawn at horses’ tails and hanged.” (Further authorities: Reiley, Memorials of London, p. 15; H. Desportes, Le Mystére du Sang.) 1290, Oxford. The Patent Roll 18 Edward I, m.21, 21st June 1290, contains an order for the gaol delivery of a Jew, Isaac de Pulet, detained for the murder of a Christian boy at Oxford. Only one month after this, King Edward issued his decree expelling the Jews from the Kingdom. There is, then, every reason to believe that it was the Oxford murder which proved the last straw in toleration. A similar ritual case was one of the main stimulants to the King and Queen of Spain to expel professing Jews from that country in 1492 (Leese: Jewish Ritual Murder, p. 20).

He was. Some of his castles round snowdonia are unrivalled through the world.

Simon you educate me in a way that encourages my love for history, my ancestry is Scots-Irish and Italian and my favorite videos are the bios, especially Oscar Wilde et al....Thank you for showing that there are still free thinkers in this society of ours....

Jews have never been persecuted. Defensive actions were taken against them on numerous occasions though.

.... Simon, you're English it's pronounced Eve-sham

King Edward to his son: ONE DAY?!, YOU WILL BE KING!

So basically a bunch of gangsters...

I'm not sure what the narrator means, but anyone who thinks a person can be both genuinely "pious" and unusually cruel (as those on the reprobate right often claim) must be like the word that was sown on rocky ground: they don't have an inkling as to what Christ was talking about. They talk as if Christ had said in the Sermon on the Mount, "Blessed are the cruel for they shall obtain mercy!" I think "religious" as the Pharisees were would be a better adjective than pious.

So many people criticizing Simon's pronunciations makes it look like Mike Judge's Idiocracy is coming to fruition.

Decimate??? One in ten.

consensus needs no modifier

Lol 6’2 was tall in Europe

Good one!

+Joseff Thomas . Lol nice comeback, To be honest I've never met a Welshman who I didn't get on with.

+Joseff Thomas . Won't be to many people queueing for a chance to be a Welshman if that's a taster.

I amcarbonandotherbits. I will, because pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerwchchwyndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch will be part of the citizenship test once Wales will (eventually) become independent.

Not everyone has a chest infection or build up of phlegm to pronounce stupidity long Welsh names. So get used to it Taffy.

uncletigger You have a weird sense of humour mate.

As a New Zealander, I LOVE to hear how the average native Welshman mangles every single English word he pronounces, because it is OBVIOUS how hard they are trying. It is really neat to hear, I am always encouraging and supportive, and correct their accent so they can continue to learn correct spoken English. I promise to try at least as hard on my Welsh pronunciation as you try on your English. That is going to be difficult for me, and easy for you, of course, but I won't make excuses !. (All sarcasm aside, when Welsh people have no pronunciation faults in English, you can rag hard, mate.)

Mine as well!

Wait. He was cross eyed? Not nearly as interesting as Henry VIII. Never killed his wife. Mostly just poor wretched Scots.

All of this certainly convinced me that Trump is a breath of stale air. Just a continuation of egotists in power. No wonder Noam Chomsky regards all such so-called leaders irrelevant to any sort of march of progress, slow and halting though it is.

A pretty complete swine but not as funny as Trump.

Killed the wretched Scots later on. It was easier to kill English rebels

An anti Semitic of the first water. Not his best idea.

Not Scots. Just English peasants.

Almost as boring a Ethelred the Unready.

Longshanks took the crown? Where did he take it?

Am I the only one who laughed at Cockermouth?

Do a video on Rothschild and how he got all his money before leaving it to his sons.

****9:43**, He was also known as "Edward Uneven-Eyes".**

Prince Edward showed plenty of “strength and determination” even *before* he was king, by taking part in the Barons’ War, and after that by going on the Ninth Crusade. He was no softy before he became king.

very good quick history of a complicated time and monarch, but in talking of Edward I, esp of his construction of fortresses in Wales, the word megalomania should come up, he had more than an out-sized ego

if I was a king back then I would've pimped so much they would all know me as Edward Lottataints.

Mispronounced Berwick, Lanark and Falkirk!

Wallace was an insignificant nobody. Bruce was the real braveheart , he restored the Scottish monarchy ftom being a puppet monarchy of the English.

Bruce murdered "the real braveheart" in a church .

I hate your goofy camp voice.

This guy was boss of his time. There should be at least a decent movie about him.

Remarkably unique pronunciation of Welsh place names and people.

Who is this person that speaks to me as though I needed his advice?

Who is this who speaks to me as if I needed his advice?

Hahahahahaha! And out the window, he goes! That's a classic scene bro! Love it!

Excellent Video. I had NO IDEA he was an Anti Semite and kicked the Jews out of England, and the English kept them out for 400 years. That's real history they would like to forget, I'm sure. You have an excellent Voice for this! Good job dude!

You blame him

Right. I don't think they've been kicked out of over 100 nations for nothing.

……but Lewes really is pronounced “Lewis”.

Hmh, I think it is quite open to interpretation.

Sounds like either a prison killer's or "shower raider's" name...

I really wish you Scots and the Welsh helped us out in 1066. Didn't end well for any of us really

Bruce Kirk 1. Wales doesn’t have an H in it. 2. Only our public toilets are outside (not that many people use them). 3. The dickheads that run Parliament are too cheap to allow the Internet to be good outside of the Universities and Airports.

You can't be from Whales they don't have internet or inside toilets even lol

uncletigger Do you have any evidence to me incorrectly pronouncing English words?

You don't actually accept my point, do you?. You don't see that your not pronouncing English clearly is exactly the same thing you are complaining about?. I mean, I am not indifferent to your complaint, I just see it as one sided in the extreme.+Joseff Thomas

uncletigger I have no problem with English accents, I was just pointing out how the pronunciations of the Welsh names was incorrect. The word ‘WELL’ for example sounds completely different in the two languages. Look it up and you’ll see what I mean.

But why do you say I have a sene of humour, Mr Thomas?. When you have a distinctly Welsh accent, speaking English, you do exactly the same thing to every English word, as you are complaining about us doing to the occasional Welsh words we try to you. Quantitatively yours is the greater fault. Do you dispute that?. Your complaint is that our various English accents are not Welsh accents, that and nothing more.+Joseff Thomas

Hopefully so. Historical facts seem to get skewed by politics and movie makers to suit agendas other than educational. "Real" inquiring minds want to know...so to speak...lol

olddogg eleventy2 True, but these summaries of history whets one’s appetite for more.

+Dr ROLFCOPTER! Yes, but the Britons were the ancestors of the Welsh in that context.( King Arthur an all that!) In 1300 Edward was King of England which happened to have conquered through War Wales, and came close to conquering the independent kingdom of Scotland. All 3 places are on the island of Great Britain but there was no political unit of 'Britain" till 1707.

Democracy = Rule by the Bankers and other hidden forces/secret occult societies. Doesn't seem like much of an improvement. At least with a King you knew who was in charge.

Whistler you cretin, I heard your voice and left immediately after I heard you mention the British, LMFAO. How about a toptenz of your most moronic utterances?

and now he is spinning in his grave over what England has become .

This great monarchs life needs to be made into a movie. Who would play Edward I?

I wonder...is the narrator related to the guy from VSauce? The could pass for twins.

I am breathless; how fast was he talking?

Damn the child trafficking "nobles".

Brit's make me ill with their hauty referances to and about "the church". Some day, hopefully soon, the truth will be accepted and God will cut down the Lucefarian cult of the Roman Catholuc church, the devil's advocate (called thePope) and wipe the filthiness of their Zionist criminal empire off the face of the earth.

Longshanks wasn't the first Edward the first. The West Saxon Edward the Elder was the first king to be called Edward, plus he was English too and not a foreigner from the House of Plantagenet.

I sincerely hope people don’t take this guy seriously. If he’s just the mouthpiece That’s fine but the facts behind what he’s telling is not 100% true.

All those brave Scots fighting for independence and now they want to be ruled by the EU.

And Lewes, like the way he avoided trying to pronounce Burgh by Sands by saying he died close to the Scottish border. Good video though

+Edward Corran I reconise the name , but need to look online for some info about him .

+Kev Caratacus No John Comyn , he was a far more consistent opponent of the English crown than the Bruce .

+Edward Corran who is the real braveheart ? Do you mean Wallace? I read a few books about him , they all contradicted each other , the facts are very few & vague , we know he wasn't poor , his father was a landowner & a knight. The trouble he started only made things worse for the ordinary Scotsman. Robert the Bruce actually united the clans & when he took the crown it was not as another English puppet king. And it remained a separate kingdom until James1st united England and Scotland after Lizzy 1st died childless.

Unique pronunciation of Berwick too!

Awesome

Several gruesome American ignorant pronunciations. The W is silent in Berwick, berr-rick. Falkirk is pronounced Foll-kirk. Evesham is pronounced Eave-shum and why are so many English people now feeling obliged to say obligated?

Attaboy Eddie...we knew ya was a good egg.

Thanks Simon you’re w great guy and your videos really chill me out and make me feel educated thank you sir

Edward: im finna go all out

“Cockermouth” lol

He was never king of Great Britain. If you can’t even get the basics right your fake news.

"Braveheart" was fractured, falsified "History" for morons.

Part of me hopes he really did toss people out castle windows too.

15:58 . . .at the very time that the Scots had united with Scotland. What?

Was his son really a queer?

Longshanks would have sorted us out of the Brexit mess! Imagine Longshanks v Corbyn LOL. OY Baldy, whats with the screwed up accent?

Hanged*

My great Pyrenees is named Longshanks.

I have only ever known one way of saying obligated. But obviously for the sins I cannot be forgiven, proceeding to commit seppuku.

Another great video!

Good point Marius.

Patrick McLeod ha!

He pronounces British place-names as though he were a Martian.

Can't B treason if ur not English

U say treason,I say not willing 2 submit

restrained his temper?! I doubt that temper began as a noun , but people bastardized the word , and the dictionary caved. I hate that

Too late now, but at several points you say 'British' when what you really mean is 'English'

Braveheart was a great film but directed by a bigot.

"...with France." I'm sure he meant.

His stepbrother was Tommy Shortshanks.

So Longshanks son was not a weakling who preferred men ? And his wife preferred William Wallace ?

Michael Rennie, best known for his Klaatu role in the original The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), played Edward I in The Black Rose (1950). Edward is portrayed as a patron of learning, being associated with Roger Bacon.

that man needs a lesson history on brithish history

+Bucky Preseau lol

+James Burkett vassal of James Stewart 5th hereditary High Steward of Scotland who submitted to Edward I ... so Wallace was a vassal of the English King and so his fighting against him was treason ...

Whilst I appreciate the work that has gone into this very informative video, I have to call you out on your very poor pronunciation of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, and his brother Dafydd. They are actually very simple names to pronounce despite how they may look to a non-Welsh person, and just a little research beforehand could have had you saying their names as they should be said.

Longshanks - Discount Tywin Lannister..

Just to be pedantic; he was not crowned "King Edward the First". He was crowned "King Edward". Monarchs, popes, etc., don't become the First until there is at least a Second. The Tudor Queen Elizabeth was referred to by that name/title until 1952, when a second Elizabeth came to the throne. Likewise Pope John Paul was referred to by that name/title until his successor took the same name, at which point he retroactively became Pope John Paul I.

Ironic that Edwarddoesn't have the same bad reputatrion as Vlad Draculesti... A brilliant Tyrant...

Silent "w" when saying Berwick. Same as Hawick and such.

Cockermouth.

How have you not done William Wallace?!?!?!

We are English We are English No one likes us We don't care We are English Super English No one likes us We don't care .

Battle of Lewes? More like Battle of LOSE!!!

He is my 26th GGF... Don Sañchez de Iñigo de Nuevo Mexico

Why were the jews taxed, banned, and a few executed?? They were usurers and destroying the peasantry through compound interest. There were a group of Jews who were kidnapping and killing Christian children for their Kabbalistic rites and were tried and found 100% guilty without any doubt. That's some of the reasons why these things happened to the Jews in Christendom and this guy and most other people never tell this side of the story for the fear of being labeled an anti semite smh. It's not anti semitic to criticize a jew who does terrible things.

Wasn’t Wallace talker than him?

This makes me want to listen to "Flower of Scotland"...

Dude talks too much

Bro what the heck ... I dont wanna look at your face all the time. I use to watch this more but its all about your mug now. Come on buddy.

Edward was disgusted with his ministers and judges they were all corrupt" nice to see nothing has changed.

PRINCE EDMUND CROUCHEBACK , THE BROTHER OF EDWARD LONGSHANKS ANGEVIN PLANTAGENET, WORE A CROSS-THE RIGHT OF WHICH TO USE ON HIS APPAREL, HE EARNED FROM BEING A CRUSADER IN LATE 1200S ON HIS TUNIC..*NOT* A HUMPBACK OR SCOLIOTIC AS RICHARD III WAS ALLEGED TO BE BUT DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP AS ..CRUSADED AND DIED IN 1296..I SUPPOSE THE POOR BASTARDS WHO LIVED WITH SHREIKS OF SCARED CHILDREN AFTER BEING SCALPED AND FACE CLEAVED BY RULE BRITTANIA SHOVED INTO THEIR PUCKERED TINY ARE.....WHAT A PRINCE...ER UH KING...THE SARACENS ( OBAMAITES) WHAT A PARTY HE COULD'A HAD AFTER LIGHTS OUT IN THE TENTS OF THE GREAT SALADIN?)...HENRY III DIED WHILE LONGSHANKS AND EDMUND WERE ON CRUSADES IN 1272....EDDIE THE GRANOLA MAN ( FRUITS FLAKES AD NUTS) WAS KNOWN FAR AND WIDE FOR ONCE ORDERING AN ENTIRE TOWN OF 1000S OF INNOCENT ENGLISH ( NOT TO MENTION WHAT? OH WELL..RULE BRITANIA. Y'ALL.....MKAY?...OR IS IT BRITTANIA OR MAYBE LIKE THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITTANICA? SOME PRETTY DARK ASSHOLES RULING THEIR ASSES IN OLD BLIGHTY./....IN'IT?

Wallace has been over rated. Also, there was never any meeting of any type between Wallace and any person of the british royals. You've been conned by an Australian crap artist.

And no where near true.

Questionable. He was how ever prone to having great male "friends". You decide.

The problem with Scotland... is that it's full of Scots!

I don't know how accurate movie was on Edward but I'm sure not very but that dude was ruthless "well we'll bread them out" "our archers will kill some of theirs as well" I myself if I was a leader I would rather breed out and I would help better then war in time people will ignore and forget differences

Great video, thanks!

Thats all you got from this? I dont think you even saw the whole video, your like are not that smart.

Your pronunciation of British town names is cringeworthy. Other than that, though, good vid.

15:55 "... at the very time the Scots had united with Scotland" I take it you meant the French?

YES: THE ROYAL COUPLE LEFT FOR THE HOLY LAND. NO! NO! STOP!: THE ROYAL COUPLE....THEY LEFT FOR THE HOLY LAND

If you can't trust a guy who's willing to turn on his own King, who can you trust

Fantastic history but this guys ignorance is just silly...the British fighting the Scots haha....what a clown

muslims aggression? you mean the result of defended Jerusalem from savage crusaders?

Seeing that he is actually English

Edward's live was incredible. I've just finished "A Great and Terrible King" and made me fall in love with this king. God bless his soul.

british..? you mean english

eev shum

hmm like ed just picked on the jew???? wonder why

Yikes! The movie was thrilling, but historically a nightmare. "Braveheart" was actually Robert the Bruce, not William Wallace! The Battle between Wallace & Sir Marmaduke Thwenge was on Stirling Bridge, not an open field. There were no skiltrons to resist English mounted knights & squires. The clothing & horse adornment was ridiculous.

This movie has great atmosphere, but historically speaking, it is worthless of amusing proportions.

Please, for us non-Welsh, tell us how to pronounce them.

Due credit: very few know that it derives from the Roman usage of that term.

"The Braveheart bad guy" seriously dude, we're not stupid.

I like your videos, but please put more effort into proofreading. This video repeatedly used pronouns redundantly, e.g. "The Scots they . . . " "Longshanks he . . . " It was grating. A pronoun should never be used directly after its antecedent.

Lando Calrissian This was a time when even Scandinavians were around 5’7 on average and they were and still are some of the tallest people in the world

Kings and queens all over the world should be executed, as well as all of their relatives and offspring.

Is this guy actually from Britain..? It’s Lew-ess not Lews. Eve-sham not Ever-sham. Ca-narv-on not Carna-von. Lan-ak not Lan-ark. Fol-kirk not Fahl-kirk. Ber-rick not Berr-wick. Flim-flam not Lon-don.

Great job

Not fit to polish The Bruce's boots.

Quite...a gathering. Don't you agree? Arrows costs money. Use up the Irish. Dead cost nothing. Yeees. But we'll hit them as well. We do have reserves. Attack! Find Wallace. If possible alive. Dead, just as good. Shall we retire?

Narrowc ross Scotland is a dump, most of its people leave for better places when the opportunity arises.

The Soy is strong here

same height as Charlemagne, but no one made a big deal out of Charlemagne's height. Did men shrink over that time?

so the establishment of Parliament is no big deal to you? One of the most important contributions in government history. That was Edward I's innovation. No other government had or had ever had one as far as we know. This guy glossed over the "Jewish problem". IT was illegal to deface English currency (the Jews were notorious for "clipping" coins to make them smaller to rip people off). I don't know how much proof he had, but that was the basis for his treatment of the Jews.

it was even worse back then...

I'm related to Longshanks. First cousin 21 times removed :D

Or he had an unusually long penis

Awesome comment!

Who's braveheart did I miss something

And that leaving it was, ' like the satisfaction of relieving oneself'!

The Jews created the coin clipping process and high tax loan shark techniques that threatened the English economy! You can see who’s pulling the strings here

Come back longshanks, all is forgiven

Freedooommm!!

"I cannot be guilty of treason when Edward is not my king." (Sir William Wallace at his trial)

Oy vey

Blame Cromwell

"The British underestimated the Scottish strength". What on earth is "British" supposed to mean in this context? Try reading a history book for God's sake - there is no Britain or British without England, Scotland and Wales, all three. Edward I was a disaster for Britain. He was asked to decide the best claimant for the Scottish throne because it was typical in those days to ask a friendly King to determine these matters. Edward I used the situation to further his own megalomania and in so doing started a war between two friendly countries, Scotland and England, that lasted 300 years. But for his stupidity there is little doubt that the Scottish and English monarchies would soon have merged (long before 1603) and the island of Britain would have been fully united. This would have set Britain on the path to international success much more quickly and prevented hundreds of years of death and destruction. Oh, and you conveniently left out the bit about Robert the Bruce actually winning the "second rebellion".

+Pete Jones And completely unoriginal.

here from age of empires 2 tutorials

Is it just me that thinks Mel Gibson should play Edward in a triple series of movies called Longshanks? 1 early years and barons wars... 2... crusades.... 3.....uniting(or war) the british isles

Edward longshanks. ......was my nickname in prison. lol

These biographies are excellently executed. Great work

Simon !! I can understand your mispronouncing Accra (capital of Ghana and pronounced with a hard A and extended a- Akraaa) but Evesham pronouced Eve -sham as Eversham. No sir

The last time England tried to conquer Scotland

The question "where do the adds originate"...I'm not sure, but this program has the scariest

William Wallace was betrayed by a traitor called John Monteith and he was bought and sold for English Gold

18:46 That sounds awkwardly sexual.

People are surprised when they discover that the English royal court and most elites spoke French and not English at this time and this is depicted in the "Braveheart" movie -Scotland too was greatly influenced by the French and many times Scottish kings married french princesses including Mary of Guise, the mother of Mary queen of Scots and Mary queen of Scots had been married to the French dauphin as a young woman but he died.

Its pronounced Fall-Kirk ,not Fal-Kirk...please do one on william wallace and john knox or anything to do with st.andrews fife from prodestant and catholic *fighting* eara in st,andrews

"The Scots united with Scotland" Did I miss something?

England needs him now to get rid of the Muslims! They must NOT touch the crown!

heheh Cockermouth...

Make a video of sir. William Wallace please

Edward the Defenestrator!

If i had been his son, i would have agreed to preserving his skeleton to scare away rebellion

There's a reason the Jewish were always persecuted internationally, and it has little to do with religion..

Welsh pronunciation all wrong

Simon manages to mispronounce even British place names in this one e.g. Evesham.

At 1min 59sec that artist got fired

And his cousin was Willie wetwanks

No wonder why the (((media))) hates Longshanks. The Edict of Expulsion should still be a thing.

Nice video, I've never really looked into Longshanks before. The Ll in Llywelyn is different to how you pronounced it and 'Dafydd' is more 'Davith' (a softer 'th', sort of). Just thought to let you know, I know a few Welsh folk who'd have something to say about wrong pronunciations :P.

No sorry you're wrong William Wallace doesn't look anything like Mel Gibson.

Cockermouth HA.

It's hard to discuss such issues within the modern framework of nationalism. These feuds were all about the nobility vying for power, land and wealth. Nations are just lines drawn by lords and kings; we still identity ourselves through these sections of land that they carved up for themselves

that was an intense one. Solid!

Video SUGGESTION: Please consider doing a video about the differences between and major achievements of: The Knights Templar, The Hospitallars, and the least mentioned (German) Teutonic Knights. I don't think many people know the difference between them. Thanks for the consideration.

Longshanks is a great porn name.

can you please make a video of King George III's

Summary: Tall guy kings real good

Wooo what were the scots before they joined Scotland, and what were they called .

He hated jews... So why did Mel Gibson make him look so bad in Braveheart?

@Pete Jones And completely unoriginal.

Damn Scots! They ruined scotland!!

Eddie longshanks needs his own movie or series

i Can see how George r.r martin created king Aerys II it's this guy in a nutshell

Even Edward I wouldn't put himself in the video so much as this narrator.

Didn't Edward the 1 remarry to a French princess and have 2 more children? I mean the age difference was huge they even named a daughter Elenore after his 1st wife .

If his last wishes were followed, it would have made for a more metal history

He got crowned on my birthday yeet

@HEREWARD THE WAKE dafuque you talkin bout Willis ? Put down the crackpipe.

Thumbs Down #209 for ruining “Braveheart” for me

Kind of glossed over the horrific things he did to the Scots, Welsh and Irish. Wilful ignorance I’d gather, judging from your terrible pronunciations of Scottish towns and your statement that the House of Commons is merely the seat of parliament for ‘England’.

Sometimes in life, you just need to find yourself

@Timothy Well it's been 3 weeks and I'm still missing!

Dont they just hate it when they reach as far south as Cockermouth

The Welsh pronunciations amuse me greatly! Such an easy Google to find the correct way to say the words :D still very amusing though and I understand why you would read them that way, solid attempt

Edward had blew eyes, one blew this way and one blew that way.

Sorry, Burr-wick? You're English, aren't you?

1:56 mark. What the hell is THAT!?! Looks like the artist used their non dominant broken arm to scribble in the dark.

How can I pay you for this amazing information.

Brilliant, but as a side, The Battle of Lewes ... Lewes is pronounced Lewis.

I was just about to comment on that lol...looks like weaver is making fun of him

what is your solution?

Please do King John. The Robin hood villain or Tiberius?

Ilkka Rautio there was rampant anti Jewish feeling throughout Europe in Medieval times.

Really interesting - sadly marred by the myriad of mispronunciations

The English bastard should have been buried in several graves in Scotland. All marked. ⚔️

The Welsh pronunciation is particularly atrocious, I love it.

And Falkirk is pronounced Fall-Kirk. Decent video, apart from the weird pronunciations.

Biographics: ber wick everyone: hnnnnnnnng

15:58 "Edward declared war on France at the very time that the Scots had united with Scotland." Surely the Scots had always been united with Scotland, mostly because they were Scottish.

So basically Longtshanks really was a cnut to the Scots, Welsh and Irish. Also William Wallace wasnt as nice and pure as the movie makes out.

'Lewes' is pronounced 'Lewis'. A surprising amount of mispronunciation by this host, which is unfortunately a little off putting and a shame, as he does a commendably great job otherwise.

Great video. The portraits of Long Shanks are just awful. They will DEFINITELY be in my nightmares tonight

After enslaving the English he tried to subdue the Scots, no way no chance.

William Wallace bio?

One of the great kings!!

Really love these video biographies! Wee note though - you’ve missed pronounced a few of the names that I noticed

Awesome

LOL Cockermouth

One of my favorite Kings.

I sometimes wonder if Simon ever actually comprehends what he's reading. "It turned into a brutal massacre of the Scots, with many people being killed."

Cool video.

Great job! Simon, you and your crew do a wonderful job!!

As a Bairn....Falkirk is pronounced as Fawkirk.

The clans of Scotland united to form a Scottish army. Stronger together, all that bollocks. Basically, fighting for Scotland and not just their clans bit of land.

No teabagging

Those Welsh pronunciations were terrible

I AM SO SICK OF SCOTLAND!

Why has there only been one William Wallace or Robert the Bruce? Forgive me, I'm American but, why hasn't (didn't) the Scotts go the way of the Irish or the State's? I've always had problems with this especially being of Scottish and Irish ancestry.

no Kiseki

I AM A AMERICAN YOU TAKER English.... "PLUCK YOU'....If You Do KNOW LOL!!!! YOU can Never WIN against a Legend of men defending there home's "FOR FREEDOM"!!! FOR one that defense his home, is Worth "10" higherd Soldiers! Eploribusis Uonam!!!

I'm always surprised by the level of 'realistic' painting this age produced. It was like they didn't care much about display of their kings and queens. Comparing with what they did 5000 years ago in Egypt and then 6500 later in this age. Soccer player Ronaldo statue style art =)

Stop saying British when you mean English, and learn how to pronounce such names as Berwick!!

Wow, Mel Gibson Braveheart left out a Ton of Stuff !!! LOL

In 1290, King Edward the 1st, grandson of the evil King John (boohissboohiss) issued an edict expelling all Jews from England. The reputation of British food has yet to recover.

Could you do one for the Irish in the house please? Maybe Brian Boru?

Was that the same lusigians that were kings of Jerusalem?

Hmmm... Not too sure about referring to Edward I as "impressive" at the end. "Ruthless" yes, "Feared" most definitely, but maybe "impressive" is the wrong word. Also, his massacre of civilians at Berwick was glossed over a bit, that was shocking even by the standards at the time. The people there even today never refer to Edward I as impressive.

Does anybody else want him to do the story of William Wallace?

"England's most impressive monarchs"? He sounded more like a brutal killer verging on dictator status. The part about expelling all Jews is particularly disturbing.

........Why have the lower classes never eaten the flesh of their rulers?..... I can't understand why they were ok with being owned like live stock.....

Could you the war the roses?

How you beat by a man name longshank!?!?

William Wallace’s biogphics please. Thanks

Scottish problem? No, we had an English problem. =D

Agreed

Screw longshanks! Walice fought bravely! Stumpy in America is trying to be a king. He will be ousted!

How you beat by a man name longshanks!?!?

@Wave Rider I'll hang you by you peafranks!!!!

I'm Wallace, I'm flawless, stay hid in the office or suffer great losses!

So where’d the Jews go after 1290?

8:30, in what sense is "decimated" being used? The correct one or the modern misuse of the word?

From "French origin"? The ruling class were all Norman French at that time. English identity didn't exist, except through the Anglishe, the Germanic Angles and Saxons.

Edward is my multi great uncle and Braveheart is my husband's multi great uncle. All worked out 700 years later.

King milquetoast boofty.

He was a Very Evil Man.

Mispronounced Dafydd...badly. Like you're not even trying.

FREEEEEDOOOOOOoomm...

Another Jewish community persecuted, funny how this seems to be a thing in any period of history.

Maybe you can actually learn history so you don't have to obnoxiously pretend that you aren't reading a teleprompter (quite a pathetic attempt to be frank). Great content though!

I prefer the braveheart depiction of this period, its cut snd dry, English bad, Scots good lol wish it was that simple in real life, instead of the bleeding and blending mess of black and white into a dirty mess of gray.

You should do enuck Johnson

Nigga looks like he just saw something very disgusting

I’m wondering why Edward Longshanks was called Edward I when there were at least two Edwards before him. The one he was named after and Alfred the Great’s son Edward. By the way, a Biographics on Alfred the Great would be great.

Edward Longshanks was a ruthless & cruel bastard. Yeah, Braveheart was 99% inaccurate but was a good film.

I like your content and stuff but.......you want us to see you more than content related animation/image/vids

You kinda glossed over the whole Scottish and welsh massacres which were huge and murdered many villages but the harshest thing is trying to integrate Scotland by raping Scottish women the night of there wedding because the church forbade adultery before marriage and also what happened to the welsh and Scottish after there rebellions which was terrible treatment in other case I really like video even if I hate the man.

Edward Longshanks: The King of Spite

What a way to survive a assassination attempt

My hero! He kicked them out!! Haha

He was a mass murdering psychopath

You get your history from bravefart! Prima nocta never happened.

He was a man of his time and bravefart is pish poor.

My great , great uncle is Adam

18:48 ........... *snorts*

Here is some advice, all English are British, but not all British are English.. Please remember that saying things like "The British underestimated the Scottish" makes no sense.

Longshanks is clearly the guy Tywin Lannister is based on...

He's not a very big bloke, the biographer, but all of his clothes look too tight and positively uncomfortable. A little more roomy would help his professional appearence, he'd look a lot healthier too, that would really help. Don't get me wrong, the biographies are very inna-rested.

"How was your day?" Me : 1:59

He was a good leader with the exception of the antisemitic stances.

Longshanks sounds like an effective leader
