Trackdays and Touring in Tassie, with Harry Porsche 911
hey guys it's uh time for a bit of a different one this week and uh it is currently six o'clock in the morning here on a sunday morning and uh i'm about to leave on a week-long trip in harry to tasmania to meet up with a bunch of other porsche guys we got there's 16 porsches going fingers crossed we're good let's get on the road so all right so we've got down here at the spirit of tasmania we're just up behind me up here and uh all the cars are all around this area and we are about to get on the boat so uh let's go cara's parked and we are on the uh the boat this is the uh cabin so i'm actually sharing this with tony this weekend and uh we have our own little bathroom it's pretty uh pretty basic but it's just overnight we'll uh we'll be in tassie in the morning but uh i'm gonna head down to the back now to the bar and uh get some heat and uh maybe something to uh cool off all right that was a very very rough night uh we're still on the ship we're just about to get off this morning it is uh it's quarter to six in the morning they wake us up at 4 45. it was a rough crossing the ship was banging and swaying yeah nobody got very much sleep it was uh definitely pretty rough but the uh i was worried the whole time that i had to put the cut the airbrake off properly hopefully we're gonna get off now we're gonna go and get some fuel and then we're gonna head out and get some breakfast on dry land all right so we are in tassie uh filling up for the first time i don't know if you can hear me on the boat but yeah that was a really rough night um hopefully it gets a little bit better i still haven't had any coffee yet uh we're gonna head off to get some breakfast so i need some coffee a little wake up all right breakfast stop we need coffee but uh i'll uh take you through and i'll just uh walk through and have a quick look at some of the cars that are uh along for the ride one at one speedster 996.53 so this is uh is actually nick diggins car which is a uh speedster with a subaru sti engine in it so it should be should be a bit of a bit of fun okay so we're down here at uh simmons plains for a day out on the track we've got all the cars set up in the pit lane uh it's good turnout today we're gonna have some fun and uh hopefully uh just take it easy oh damn it keys all right we're about to head out for the uh first go out on simmers plains in harry so uh going to take it easy to start with just ease my way into it and have some fun so um what hmm so this is nick's 356 speedster replica that has been built by a group in melbourne and as you can see it is running a subaru sti engine and driveline and the fit and finish of this thing is absolutely fantastic it is a stunning looking car just see this beautiful wood rim steering wheel and all the finish is all fantastic he has electric power steering fitted to it and he actually has a uh a rack here that uh holds the spare tyre and on the other side has uh normally has a jerry can for e85 because it needs it for the detonation it's got the roll bar here and yeah the finish of this whole car is absolutely stunning it won't let go it does somewhat break the point that he wanted like i like oh ah all right that was a fantastic day out here um finally getting harry out on a slightly bigger track uh getting to tweak a few things adjust the brake bias a bit getting that looking a bit better and uh and then getting harry out in the ski pan just then that was that was a whole lot of fun the engine uh seems to be running super smooth touch wood everything's going well and i'm really enjoying it so uh that was a great day had by all and now we're going to go and do some fun roads on our way to tonight's dinner stop at bishop ah that's it that's that's my favorite road in tassie uh it was incred such a good one this is the first road we've done this this time but we've all just parked up out the middle of nowhere all right that was an amazing first day getting out to simmers plains just uh just getting a feel for harry again and uh and doing some fantastic roads we uh we all we went out at a mill and we everybody crashed very early last night because of the uh the horrible night's sleep the night before on the boat but uh i'm refreshed it's a nice brisk morning here in vishnu and we are going to make our way down to hobart today with some some nice roads on the way a little bit more relaxed day and uh yeah and we'll see how the festivities proceed so all right so we've had some great roads so far this morning uh just uh on our way to lunch now and uh i've been having an issue with harry that every time i hit a uh a semi bigger bump that happens my petrol flap keeps opening up every time it's definitely something i'm gonna have to adjust uh on harry when i get back that's something a bit different you don't see a penny failing to uh every day it's a nice morning drive we pulled up for lunch and uh yeah bit of fun and now a nice relaxed lunch and then we'll head on down to hobart this afternoon i think it's going to be a bit of a cruisy drive to hobart and a relaxing afternoon okay so we had lunch and we did a pretty relaxed drive today just down the southeast coast to hobart which is right down the bottom of tasmania and i am now in my my hotel room which has got a beautiful view should be a nice relaxing evening one of the more relaxed days on this trip we are down at basketville raceway today for a uh track day we've got the tracks to ourselves for the whole day open pit lane it's going to be a lot of fun and as you can see we already have tony and jack just tearing it up baby breaks you're out so all right we're gonna head out now in the uh in tony's gt3 rs and uh see how she goes we'll just take it nice and we easy oh just tucks so nice holy dooley yeah this thing is just such an animal it's the limit is just so high the lateral traction that you have is just so insane it takes a moment to come down yes such an adrenaline push it is so all right it's uh my turn driving this uh big orange beast so uh let's go ahead and take it a little bit easier than tony because uh yeah wow wow oh it's just it's just so easy it's egging you on oh yeah so wow yeah that that is thank you very much for that that is that is very special holy moly that thing is unbelievable the just the limit this the lateral grip in that car is so insane the level is so high it is holy moly it just does it so easily it really like like in in harry i am working working really hard to uh to to get it and that thing just just could do it all day just all day without blinking wow all right and uh nick is now going out in harry and uh giving it give me the bell see how it goes what oh did you find the back was a little bit happy yes but not in a bad way it's it's like it's quite catchable totally predictable yeah and if you want to do it you can but i don't think that you uh i'm not scared of it yeah i'm just driving around it using it a bit whatever horrible clutch yeah the hydraulic clutch is horrible yes the brakes too much effort for my tastes but it's it's it's um boosted brakes the throttle response is incredible and yeah it's it's a really nice car to drive jeff i really enjoyed that yeah i thought i was just going to go out and do a couple of laps and put down all the rest of it and i thought i'm getting in the groove all right so uh in the essence of sharing i got mr twis miss david twist he's very generous and uh and maybe uh full hearty that that's probably a good way of putting it and and uh letting me have a uh a little go in the uh in the box to spider so uh i'm really keen on these things i'm really keen to see how it goes so uh let's check the camera in and see how see how it is all right so i just had to go in uh twisty's box to spider and uh for those of you who don't understand this basically is not a regular boxster it's it's pretty much a uh cayman gt4 without the aero so it's got the same engine and gearbox the engine is a uh as a detuned uh 911 carrera s engine i'm in love this thing is this thing as much as i love the gt3 rs this is plenty fast enough on the track and having the manual it's a little it's it's it gives you a little bit more to do it's a little bit more involving and just it's it's a little it's a little tamer than the the rs is just as uh tian said earlier it's um it's thor's hammer whereas this thing this thing you can take the shots uh yeah i am i'm a big fan it is it is a fantastic car now i have to save some money all right that was a fantastic day at the track i'm back now at the hotel and uh wow driving some of those other cars getting a bit of a taste of the other um you know flavors of the uh the porsche brand was really good and um yeah just just had a great time uh it's an exhausting day a long day at the track it was open the whole day so it was just as much track time as you wanted it was uh yeah just you came in because you were tired but it was just brilliant and uh oh i am looking forward to going out and having a few adult um adult beverages so uh i will catch you guys tomorrow okay so today is the morning of day four and uh we're working our way from hobart where i'm just leaving now all the way up north to uh or up the west coast to cradle mountain for uh their accommodation tonight and these are some really good roads going out here uh we've got morning traffic to deal with now which in the set of hobart is surprisingly bad it's it's pretty awful in the centre of robot but um we'll uh crews we're getting out of it now and uh hopefully hit some good roads have some nice uh lunch and uh yes get on with the festivities so we're over the west side of the island uh just working our way up from the south to the uh uh the midwest of the island and there's some great roads out here we're just stopping to fill up and continue on to dinner tonight at cradle mountain all right so we're here for our accommodation tonight at cradle mountain and uh we've got these uh cool little cabins to ourselves i'll give you a look as soon as you walk in there's this weird thing in the middle of the room which i don't understand is actually a bath facing out to the ush and the uh the road for the cars driving past looks pretty good but um i think we need to uh get some refreshments after a long day driving all right guys it's the morning of day four hang on how many days have we been here today is friday today is friday all right guys it's the morning of day five not day four um and we're all here just uh getting ready to head down to strawn today which is uh which is a really beautiful spot and there's nice roads a long way down time to get some coffee and and then get on the road you can see here this is not good we have some fuel leaking out of stuffed car so we need to investigate and see where all this stuff is dripping from it looks to me like it's a connection on the fuel pump i was behind a van right and next thing out from the bat van emerged this kangaroo in the middle of the road and i had nowhere to go yeah and it just went straight up or i went straight over it goodness i heard it tumble a bit and it came out the side yeah i've got to just hit the fuel pump nice nice foggy morning here just coming out of it now it's much thicker just before so that was mostly a crazy drive this morning we just pulled up here in storm which is a beautiful little uh uh coastal town in the bottom of tasmania and uh yeah stop for lunch and uh and then some more fun roads this afternoon the confluence twizzy's quiet copped it then oh i love the west coast over here the roads are amazing in and out of uh strawn and queenstown there are some fantastic roads that just keep going and going harry has been performing flawlessly which has been great um touchwood and i definitely think we've earned our evening uh relaxation all right uh it's the morning now of day six um we had an amazing meal at the uh accommodation last night fantastic and uh we are off now for a bit of a run down through re-stamped this morning and then um got a bit more driving back north to devonport tonight to get back on the ferry so been a great trip last day here in tassie and we're gonna make the most of it glorious run down to reece dam and uh we have the cars here there's only three of us that did the trip but it's a nice spot and it's 55 k's in and 55 k's out so it takes us you know an hour each way i'm sure so we stopped at a beautiful spot for lunch and the guys are just having uh a nice friendly game of backgammon and uh what better backgammon table last afternoon the trip and you can see uh harry's copped a bit of a bashing there is definitely uh there's a nice build up of dirt and grot on here one or two bugs some pearl or stone chips that that that's a monster tony's pretty much gone through a windscreen a year since he's had this car jed's car has um has actually had a bit of a clunk uh coming from this front corner and nick who this car was basically brand new when he brought on the trip has completely destroyed his rear tyres there's nothing left on that so it looks like we found an alternative road to go to our dinner destination or our next destination um half the group on mostly grubby and i guess stay on the tarmac but there's a dirt stage and you know what not let's see how harry goes in the dirt so so it looks like harry likes the dirt that was a whole lot of fun um i'll be doing a bit more of that in the future she's a driver and with that i have made it all the way back home and uh harry performed flawlessly i'll give you a full rundown of how it all went how the aircon worked and all those sort of things uh on a wrap up maybe next week but um that was a fantastic trip and uh now it's time to uh come back down to reality and uh get back into the projects again all right guys we'll see you next time you
