Exploring MOROCCO’S FASCINATING Capital | The Reality of RABAT

but yeah you guys you don't want to fall here all right Johannes you guys were exploring here in the evening listen that's the call to prayer it's so  cool to experience very first time oh it's such a it's such a surreal experience  coming from the Christian World Europe   to the Islamic world and just listen in the back  Alleyways of historic Ally thank you was a French   protectorate from 1912 to 1925. and then it became  the official Capital before that Fez was the   capital and so here it's rich in the sense that  there's lots of International Investment embassies   a well-developed tourism scene but not as big  as the Marrakesh scene The Fez scene Casablanca   I'll just listen to The Cult of Prayer what do  you think about the cult of Prayer it's it's very   um emotional somehow yeah the first one  um call to prayer intimate intimate yeah   and also official also public we're in the  back Alleyways and you can hear everything   really well and Fez it's very loud and  chaotic it's hard to hear sometimes welcome now we are looking for the ocean the Atlantic  Ocean to see the sunset the beach one tip I   have is if you're lost looking for directions  ask somebody who works in the shop which way   is the beach La Playa French LaPlace don't  ask a stranger or don't accept directions   from someone on the street that randomly  approaches you in the right direction tell him so the motorcycle helmets  here look like a World War II helmet   he's going to battle against a dead end yes another thing that makes rabbit interesting  is the mix of European architecture   and the Moroccan architecture  hey buddy Rickman that's a puppy bye bye so here we have a mosque only for   women and they're going to pray  and this is the men's section now us as non-muslims we  technically can't enter but anyways   um I wouldn't want to go to disturb the prior  anyways and while we have my city wall a medieval   city wall here yeah there's a port here that  I saw online there's definitely a port and   here we have lots of people walking around  nice and spacious and there's a bridge here CD means something with a diplomatic Diplomat  and as I said there's lots of embassies here so   many people from around the world are working in  this city making it a rather International City   is speaking so quite interesting um everywhere  online said that rabbat is a little bit   um less visited so that's one  of the reasons we came here   and yeah and it does not feel uh the  slightest bit dangerous it feels very relaxed   nobody has approached us and tried  to do anything I like it so far all right you guys so you see this guy  follow me he's going to want to ask for money   but you just keep going okay all right Johannes Johannes come so um he wants us to go one  way and just don't engage keep going uh he doesn't   have to tell us where to go we're free to go where  we want so that's how you deal with these guys um   uh and like I said if you want to ask for help  ask for someone who works at the shop here   and if we would have went if we would have  followed him yeah he would have eventually   he would have he would have asked for money  and he would have pressured us and changing   money somehow yeah the most they're gonna  do is try to intimidate you and pressure   you but they're not going to assault you  definitely not going to assault you but   they will intimidate until you feel so  uncomfortable that you just give them   until you give them money so it's a tactic that  is not representative of the Moroccan people and   the Moroccan tourism industry this does not  represent Moroccans like interestingly this   city is a lot newer than Fez where we were  before this was founded in the 12th century   I believe Fez was founded in the central 8th  century and if you think strategically this   city is located on the Atlantic Ocean there's  lots of trade Merchants going uh through this   area the Spanish Empire the Portuguese Empire  French English of course in route to the Canary   Islands West Africa and later on of course um  the Americas so it's quite interesting to see   the richness and and culture and architecture  and food because everything was so connected   by the Mediterranean Sea and that's what makes  this part of the world so fascinating to visit so Johannes what does this area make  you think of in terms of the Fortress   the coastal scenery uh first you can see  the uh some of the colonial history then   um just uh the point that it is very historical  you can see that it's an important city now it's   the capital of Morocco but what it also reminds me  of is a a Greek Town at the Mediterranean Sea with   all those small white buildings and Alleyways  buildings and nice little atmosphere it's a lot   it's a lot colder than fast it's like almost  10 degrees 10 degrees colder yeah nice nice   weather and you can see guys all these people are  normal tourists Moroccans International people and   they're just chill nobody here is bothering you  but again when you enter the city you're gonna   have a few guys that try to become friendly  with you but it's not them being friendly   they're totally trying to take advantage of your  innocence and pressure you into giving them some   money bring you to a dark alleyway so again do  not engage just say Le chocol and that means no   thanks and keep walking and they'll leave you  alone I guarantee because the penalty for them   uh abusing tourists I should say is very serious  and if you do report it to the police or they get   caught in the act there are severe consequences  for them so they're trying to get rid of this in   Morocco but you also have to keep in mind that  Morocco was devastated by coronavirus two years   without tourism it's not like the European Union  so you have to understand both sides but just   don't engage keep going and enjoy your time here  because we've been enjoying our trip in Morocco   it's absolutely incredible they all say welcome  to Morocco they try to show you around they want   to be friends with you and they just have good  intentions and I'm saying that with all sincerity what's your name where you guys  from where are you from We're from   here you're from uh you're from  yes and what do you want people   from outside of Morocco foreigners what  do you want them to know about Morocco and   the people what do you want them to know about  you guys your country firstly welcome everyone   it's a pleasure to to be here it's a great  country you can you can be here wherever you   want in whatever season in winter or summer it's  all it's always beautiful yes you can visit like   Casablanca Tangier or Marquez why do you have this  on your on your phone my friend big muscles always   big Arnold Schwarzenegger is your hero yes so you  want a role model Your Role Model yeah so you want   to always go to the gym nice so you want to be the  greatest bodybuilder on the planet so it's my uh   all right I was going to ask your dream what your  dream is and it's to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger   Arnold Schwarzenegger the Moroccan Schwarzenegger  don't mess with this guy yeah it is hey man how   are you I'm fine and you good uh wow you guys all  speak wonderful English so you learn in school   you learned English in school yeah schools didn't  didn't teach you well it's online online or from   Netflix movies YouTube video games Netflix  of course all right I'm very impressed yes we will go to the restaurant but  a pleasure to meet you yeah okay thank you no steroids and you'll get the  greatest American woman of your dreams I like it I really like this Market life any country that has Market action  is a great country to travel to   so now we're looking for some food but uh the  only thing we see is clothes so I might have to   buy my girlfriend a Moroccan dress here and give  it give it to her in in Spain so she can wear it   around and she will convert from Catholicism to  Muslim hey bro so if you have a girlfriend or   a wife oh sorry you can uh come to this part of  you can come to this part of rabbat to get your   girlfriend a nice Moroccan dress right information  the Moroccan clothing is absolutely phenomenal here's a tip you guys if you're from the Midwest  the midwestern United States and someone asks you   where you're from in the United States you just  gotta say Chicago because everyone worldwide knows   Michael Jordan Unfortunately they don't know the  Milwaukee Bucks Indiana kumpo not everybody like   they know Michael Jordan so lots of times I tell  people I'm from Chicago but just to the north   so I got a shoe Shiner here um  interesting that I used to shine   shoes at a job and Milwaukee at a hotel  Athletic Club and it's actually kind of   a fun thing to do and my shoes you know  they've been dirty from walking in Fez   this guy gets spotted from a mile away  he came up and he's charging 50 cents   so I'll give them a little tip I appreciate these  people who are trying to make a living like this potatoes coffee shotgun I think it's mine  yeah oh meat meat potatoes cheese wow try it oh how does it taste all right we got some fries some cheese almost potatoes a flavor of spicy Pizza  I don't know it's good pistachio wow it's   spicy yeah I put some oil on it okay okay  okay yeah what is this tagine okay okay wow my first taste of Tajin and it looks like  it's gonna be spicy there's a lot of sauces   some cheese potatoes and beef I'm not  sure let's give it a go and some herbs has a the flavor of a Indian  dish so red pepper I think   very flavorful very flavorful juicy  succulent you have to try it yo-yo wow they've got fresh Stingray there  he said Zimbabwe and sardines I think   sardines they would say espetos espetos wow yes okay wow he wants to take  your banana peel for you my banana yes   my banana yeah he took your banana okra okra  oh tuna tuna tuna yes great some shrimp some   bigger fish some calamares squid squid wow a real  Street Market the street market action is alive   in the morning the fish market hello some nuts  some dates eggplants Mediterranean plants wow this is the best market we've been to thus  far right this is a very original the Saturday   Morning Market I think or Sunday what day is  it uh Sunday yeah Sunday Morning Market okra oh   some Moroccan police protecting  the tourists of course   because they do protect the tourists  here there's been a few occasions where   police uh were watching us and when someone  approached us the police came up to shoot   them away so we've had good experiences like that  over here some Moroccan bread like a crepe almost I'm sure it would be delicious we'll  have to try one later I think we're   gonna go on a shopping spree later  in the day because we have like   um 50 local 50 euros of local currency  left that I want to spend some all right so today's mission in Rabat day two the  four the first full day is to explore some beaches   uh some landmarks see if we can  make some good deals in the market   so we've already made some good  deals we got two coffees for   and we 14 yeah two coffees for 14 Dirham which is  one Euro 40 cents and four pastries for seven yeah non-muslims are allowed here okay I'm not sure I'm  not sure about the religious but we can come on   all right you guys so this is what a Muslim  Cemetery looks like I've actually been in one of   these before in sayuta Spain so slavery to Spain  was 50 Muslim 50 Christian and a guy showed me uh   where his parents were buried and this is next to  the Atlantic Ocean now if you were to travel South   along the coastline you would eventually get  to the disputed territory of Western Sahara or   Morocco as the Moroccan government and King says  and just to the northwest of there would be the   good old Canary Islands so while this territory uh  is just great in terms of the Age of Exploration   history in fact there was a lot of piracy going  on in this area and Robinson Crusoe in the novel   Daniel Defoe wrote about his uh encounter with  pirates here and the Saleh river which is the   river that dissects rabbat and Saleh so we're  going to see that later as we continue our tour also went to uh Northern Africa yeah and he was   captured by Pirates here and  enslaved I just read the book wow you would not want to fall down here you guys so this is of course the Atlantic coast the  Atlantic Ocean so it was here in the 16th   century and thereafter that the Pirates at the  time that navigated this area lived in these   lands they would capture all sorts of people  including Spanish Sailors going to the Canary   Islands English French and whoever else they came  into contact with wow it's almost uh volcanic like whoa the most muscles oh wow come here okay all right muscles Johannes come yeah look all right you guys we're gonna try some  muscles they caught these here in the rocks they're super cool Cheers Cheers Cheers  Cheers enjoy the Atlantic Ocean mussels he's cooking them right here wow  from taste fresh from the Atlantic from fisherman I don't I'm not  exactly sure what they're fishing for   but yeah you guys you don't want to fall here maybe there's some Pirates here cooking them  yeah he's he's boiling them maybe there's some   Pirates here you guys I give him some money  I'm gonna give I'm gonna give him some money   just you're going to just for sharing  yep uh do you have some some points yes   no no no no no no no no no take it take it take it all right you guys so he uh boils them here on  this little makeshift fire in the volcanic rock   okay thank you Messi awesome so they are fishing for a  month like that's how you catch mussels   I'm not I no no you have to go down  and get the muscles off the rocks   I think they're catching a bigger fish we have the  old historic Medina that way behind those walls   and the beach here well not even  a beach deadly Cliffs of Morocco   definitely these are deadly I'm sure there's  accidents every single year here Salem what's this what's this bait bait it's  bait uh-huh what kind of fish fish Melissa   huh I don't know how to say any of the fish  in in French or Arabic that's a problem   I need to study much more before I  come back oh Salim bonjour bonjour so oh there's a a swimming pool a pool wow yes  nice bait great so you guys there's a lot of   trash here unfortunately and the problem  is is there's nowhere to put the trash   along the beach and throughout the  city there's very few trash bins yeah it's not nice to see but unfortunately it is what  it is oh I think he's got a fish I think he's got   a fish oh he's got a little fish let's see what  kind of fish it is Morocco's greatest fisherman oh   whoa what is it whoa shiny ah okay  in English do you know no French okay let me know in the comments what this is you  guys wow it Comer yes oh yes very nice thank you wow so cute the street kitties  performing a street show how much   how much here money money money good kitties oh money money here you go there you go buy  some buy some tuna buy some tuna my name   is Ali ah surfing surfing Ali and you're  from Morocco or yeah great beaches Plaza all right Ugandan Congo let's give it a taste   um very pure Fez you can I try can I  wear oh oh like this like this okay how do I look guys this is The Fez hat  that people thought this originated in   Fez but there's been studies and they don't  really know where it started but it's called   a fez hat although we are in Rabat it's  a coffee place they're the same bro bye all right the market Spring is getting underway whoa all right
