Bellagio is a small town located on a promontory where Lake Como splits into two branches: the western branch leading to Como and the eastern branch leading to Lecco. It is situated in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, about 75 kilometers north of Milan.
Bellagio is often referred to as the "Pearl of Lake Como" due to its picturesque beauty and luxurious ambiance. Next a little about the history of this place. The area around Bellagio was inhabited long before the Roman period. Later during Roman times that Bellagio gained significance due to its strategic location. In the 15th century, the powerful Sfondrati family from Milan acquired Bellagio. Under their rule, the town grew in importance and began to develop into a more significant cultural and economic center.
By the 18th century, Bellagio began to attract the attention of wealthy Milanese families. They started building summer residences in the area. One of the most significant developments during this period was the construction of Villa Melzi between 1808 and 1810. Francesco Melzi d'Eril, the vice-president of the Napoleonic Italian Republic, commissioned this villa. And it became a symbol of Bellagio’s transformation into a luxurious resort destination. The villa’s beautiful gardens and neoclassical architecture were designed to complement the stunning natural landscape.
Unfortunately, I was not allowed into the villa with my camera or asked me to pay 300 euros. You could see the entrance to the Villa Melzi at the beginning of the video But there are many other beautiful places and corners of the city ahead. Abandoned villa in Bellagio. The reasons for its abandonment are unclear
but it may involve ownership disputes or the high cost of restoration. Throughout the 19th century, Bellagio continued to grow in popularity among European elites. Notable figures, including writers, artists, and royalty, frequented Bellagio, further enhancing its reputation as a place of beauty. Such as Franz Liszt, Stendhal, Queen Victoria, Jules Verne, for example.
This is the ferry terminal. From here you can easily reach the different towns on Lake Como, such as Varenna, Menaggio and others. After World War II, Bellagio, like much of Lake Como, saw a significant increase in tourism. The luxurious villas were often converted into hotels or public spaces, allowing more people to enjoy the beauty of Bellagio. Bellagio has managed to retain much of its historic charm and natural beauty, despite the influx of visitors. The Bellagio area has been featured in various films, books and other cultural works, contributing to its international reputation.
Some scenes of such films as "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones" (2002), "Casino Royale" (2006), "A Month by the Lake" (1995) were filmed in the surrounding area. A little later we will come to the charming winding cobbled streets leading from the lake shore. Bellagio is known for its high-quality silk products, a tradition dating back to the silk industry of nearby Como.
In the 19th century, Bellagio was part of the thriving silk trade in the region, with many of its residents involved in silk production and trade. Silk scarves, ties and other fashion items can be found in local shops. Now we are walking along the famous street, you may have often seen it in photos when Bellagio is mentioned.
