CRAZY! Hitchhiking DMZ Border In Korea! (You Won't Believe Who Picked Me Up )Bike Touring Korea #13
I feel so much better today um I'm so happy I stayed here I got a good good night's rest I mean I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and the lights were still on that's how tired I was I got in I took a shower. I always wash my clothes in the sink and with body wash or soap whatever and then hang those up to dry and then I laid down on the bed with the lights on and was just out I was out. I woke up at 5:00 a.m.
I was like what the hell uh you ever been that tire? where you just forget everything forget to turn the lights off and you just fall asleep yeah well anyways it's a beautiful day today it looks like, a little cloudy a little overcast we're going to go down the road because I got online and I was looking at places to eat and looks like there's Smokehouse a Texas barbecue place just right there and so the pictures online look pretty legit. and so let's go. let's go test that out. let's do it and check it out my new Gadget I got myself a little tripod when I was in Thailand and so yeah I don't have to ask people to take pictures for me I can just you know set the tripod up and maybe get some interesting angles and some different shots that way so that's pretty cool that's pretty cool pretty happy about that Texas Barbecue Blue Smoke wow okay we got barbecue brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs, spare ribs, beef ribs, pasta and seafood let's go test it out let's do it and they're open hell yeah Wow Wow first impressions legit this is it this is good wow is this in Korea? are you kidding me everything Texas in here Texas Texas Texas in case you didn't know I'm from Texas and so I'll uh I'll be the final judge if it's a true Texas barbecue okay so looks like I'm gonna get a ton of food but I just can't come here and just get a sandwich like that ain't going to work so I'll take a lot of it to go and be munching on it throughout the day oh my gosh all right I think I can handle this this is spare rib spare ribs and brisket, and pulled pork, the chicken. awesome looks amazing looks really good and this is a Blue Smoke Barbecue sweet sauce and spicy sauce spicy sauce. all handmade here? yeah awesome okay wow that looks incredible that looks so good coal saw some corn couple rolls they even give you some tortillas they even give you some tortillas and here's a here's a corn chip right here french fries salad uh wow okay you know I'm going to go straight for the brisket straight for the brisket I love me some brisket cut right through it looks nice and juicy wow kind of fatty but a that ain't bad peppery Texas barbecue as you can see is obviously very different from Korean barbecue and it has its own unique style right so in Texas you uh you smoke a lot of the meats uh it's more beef based instead of pork and so let's try the pork damn this is supposed to be for two people, but I might be able to finish it I might be able to finish it they even give you scissors you wouldn't find that in Texas but that's definitely Korean Korean style Texas barbecue give you some jalapenos [Music] wow I love that I just have a a huge projector screen here showcasing how you do Texas barbecue so that's it right there big smokers I'm going to need a bigger napkin than that though where the napkins at? we need big paper towels, that's what we do in Texas plop down a big paper towel roll on your table this ain't going to cut it that's about as much as I can do I'm going take some of it to go most of the chicken a little bit of the brisket I'm going to take the rolls with me make me a little sandwich later some french fries but taking that to go I'd give it a 10 out of 10 for Korea for sure uh back home in Texas I think a lot of the uh barbecue connoisseurs and people who really know barbecue they could probably you know be picky and break it down for you but to me, I think it's pretty damn good I sent a picture to my parents and my mom was like damn that looks legit like yeah it's it is legit for sure so Blue Smoke Barbecue here in Korea come check it out it's freaking good I will say there is one extremely ugly thing in here though so ugly, this right here is the ugliest thing I've ever seen you'll either get it or you won't all right so this road right here should lead all the way to the river and to a point where you can look into North Korea is what it says on the map and so that's what we're doing we're just going to take this road as far as we can I don't know if there's going to be checkpoints I don't know what to expect we're just going to go and see what happens and see if we can't get a glance into North Korea interesting color and yeah so the barbecue cost 59,000 won which is around 42 bucks yeah that's got to be the most expensive meal I've had in Korea so far and honestly I probably wouldn't have eaten the big meal on the first Korea tour but thanks to you guys thanks to everyone who's watched these videos, subscribed uh I'm making a little bit more money so thank you so much for allowing me to indulge from time to time so, I've had so many people uh donate on buymeacoffee.com and so many people have left super thanks and I can't thank you enough it's awesome and it's cool you know when I go to places like that I don't have to worry so much like oh my gosh, this is going to cost $42 for lunch so it's nice and uh makes me happy and so thank you so much 1.5 km away and a beautiful area out here I'd have to say rice fields, wow that rice has grown a lot since the last time I was here they were planting it when I was here last time looks like they're harvesting some big beautiful chilies here let's see if we can get a closer look those look nice the chilies chili hello wow, thank you thank you he's like yeah this guy lots of chilis and over there too? can i see? it's ok? he gave me the green light yeah back in here maybe oh yeah that's where they grow mhm it's hot in there it is so warm in that greenhouse oh man quick little stop we're about a kilometer and a half away from the river let's go take a look at North Korea if we can she looked awesome she got that bandana on, she looked pretty tough I bet the people out here are pretty tough living off the land, you got to be no ah no no those are a little too prickly for rambutan i think but that's kind of what they look like there's a bunch of them up there uh what are those? let me know are they fruit? can you eat them? yeah there's a bunch of them up there all righty so I think we've made it to the end of the road to the left I don't think I can go there it says do not enter but this way is what's called the Peace Trail and the DMZ Peace Trail so it looks like we can go that way so that's what we'll do that's what we'll do and it looks like maybe from up there, we can get a look into North Korea let's go do it that's it, right there that would be North Korea the most cut off nation in the world crazy and it's look how fortified it is over here now that's a wall that is a wall okay uh let's get out of here all right it is so quiet out here it's kind of eerie especially knowing that you're that close to the most militarized border in the world even though it's named a demilitarized zone it's just crazy to think too like that has been the line that has separated North and South Korea for over what is it 70 years now three generations you know after World War II two countries two outside powers were just like okay uh let's just draw the line here and split up families and you know just caused a lot of heartache and hardships and that decision has haunted Koreans for three generations you know it kind of reminds me of the India partition when uh when England when the British when they got out of India outside powers were just like okay uh we're going to draw a line here and you know one side is going to be Muslim the other side is going to be secular and okay go and what happened millions of people died and same thing that happened here you know outside countries drew a line and then caused uh the breakup of one of the most homogeneous countries in the world there's no reason to divide it um the line wasn't decided on any cultural values it wasn't even necessarily geographical I mean yeah there's a river here but it doesn't go all the way along the 38th parallel they were they're basically just like okay half and half uh the Soviet Union you can occupy the North and the United States you get the South and so you know it's crazy something that was supposed to be temporary has lasted this long and you know I don't think there's any signs of reunification in the near future unfortunately so that's kind of the uh the sad reality of Korea it's uh pretty tragic got some feed lots out here woo smells nice and fresh let me tell you you you know what we say in Texas, that's a smell of money CCTV in the middle of the intersections of course there is of course there is and now I am back on the bike course. so yeah there's actually a bike course that runs way up North over here
there's a green line on my map there are signs. so I can uh safely ride on these roads right here I believe and won't cause any trouble I just stopped to get a quick look at this ribbon here I want to see what it says I think it just says the name of the town I'm in here? I see ah this her home? ah this is actually why I stopped too I wanted to get a closer look at this home here because it just looks so old so uh traditional and uh maybe that's a toilet but just an old old home. not sure if anyone lives here there's no cars here obviously that lady doing something over here maybe that's like a, not a toilet maybe some sort of storage room or something I don't know all right they not too far down the road just up the hill this is what caught my eye this tomb-like burial mound looking thing and then this over here this super traditional-looking old almost like a temple or Shrine building, all right so I believe this is the burial site of a very significant historical figure here in Korea his name is Park Chin and uh he planted this juniper tree 500 years ago he was alive during the uh the reign of Sejong the guy who created the Korean alphabet and so for whatever reason he was exiled to this area in Korea he was eventually released it said on the uh the 14th year of King Sejong's reign but apparently, he had uh built a road for the people here because they kept like falling into the water is what the translation said and so he he uh contributed he gave up some of his own land to build a road for the people here not sure why he was exiled though, didn't really say that but maybe he was buried here at the age of 83 all right let's do some translations here and see what's going on all right if you're Korean you can read that if you're not just real quickly I'm not going to read the whole thing but it basically it says it's the Monument of Sedang God Sunduk The tomb of the founder of Josean is enshrined on the mountain side so is that right? the founder of the Josean Dynasty is here? that's pretty significant, if that is true I'm not sure but looks like it's locked up looks like I can't go in there so let's get on the road let's get out of here and I'll probably stop in another two minutes to check something out but that's all right I like doing it Cobwebs on me spiderweb, I don't think too many people come out this way my bike looking good yep didn't have to go far there's this little bench area right here that looks like nobody has sat here in a very long time but there is a little DMZ sign right here talking about the peace Trail so got to bust out the translator and uh see what it has to say, so give me a second okay let me just show you again that if you want to read it you can pause the video and check it out it basically just talks about the Peace Trail and how it says the peace, the DMZ Peace Road is a worldclass luxury walking trail spanning a total of 526 kilometers um it is based on the excellent ecological cultural and historical resources near the DMZ to promote peace between North and South Korea and to revitalize the border area economy and then it goes into detail about all the different courses there but so the road forks off here and the bike course is this way but looking on the map it looks like there's a uh a building up there like a monument and a statue called The Aegibong maybe and there's a park up there and there's some infrastructure and buildings and it looks really nice and so I don't think this is like an area where I shouldn't or you know can't go up and so I'm going to climb this mountain here and go see what's up there let's do it man the gnats are out the gnats I guess it's just a summer thing and if they are all over my bike they're all over me a lot of fun a lot of fun get out of here this definitely looks like a road that hadn't been used in a long time or is hardly ever used jeez I have millions of gnats flying all over me what the heck and it looks like they're harvesting some bees out here too I don't see any flying around yeah there there are some bees in there a lot of bees through here okay oh [ __ ] okay it's blocked off [ __ ] okay can't go this way guys damn so this looks like the official road to go up to that Monument up there looks a little more legit looks like there's a checkpoint up here I wonder if they'll let me ride my bike up there it would be nice if they just gave me a ride up there that'd be sweet let's see what they say though a little out of shape that two weeks not doing anything in Thailand just editing I did work out though I did run but I'm not in bike shape anymore a little tired okay maybe you got to like sign up and write down all your information okay yeah your name name car number bicycle my house? okay. tent. uh I sleep in a tent or hotel hotel yeah well every every night changing changing yeah you passport passport passport USA passport come yeah okay like where's your where are you staying? changing every night for uh for bugs maybe all right I should have sprayed that stuff on my face too because uh they're swarming all over my face here it's crazy but I'm looking at like a 25-minute walk they said maybe a car will drive by and they'll pick me up that'd be nice and that looks like a steep hill too. damn all right somebody come pick me up and uh save me from the bugs oh my gosh it's so bad yep and that is the the road I was just on I see the bees down there so don't go down that way let's see if they'll pick me up nope, damn we are not going to let that smelly sweaty stinky dude in my nice brand new car I don't blame him I am pretty sweaty and stinky probably but come on now help a brother out is all I'm hearing right now it's pretty annoying, o another car hey hey hey what's up see if they'll stop no all right just wave em, see you 0 for 2 0 for two me and the gnats it'll just be me at least I'm not alone I got like 50 gnats flying around my face right now it's annoying all right here's another car here's another car hey hey hey what's up hey can you give me a ride? yeah yeah all right yeah thank you, thank you wow Legend awesome let me get try to get these gnats off my face before I get in okay thank you I know I know, bugs there's so many bugs in here get out get out get out get out see I knew that was going to happen it's very very hot hot hot hot hot i think he recognizes me awesome, alright yeah the Peace Echo Exhibition Hall all right, thank you so much thank you man that AC felt so good and just like most things in Korea it's done really well out here in the main area you have a lot of these little art installations you got a little armadillo wow I think that's an armadillo see a lot of those in Texas a very cool exhibition hall wow look at that that is really cool awesome use of the projector screens right here wow but all the information is in Korean so but it's cool just to pass through that's awesome now that is a pretty epic War memorial right there the Marine Corps War Memorial I think is what it is and you can't tell but he's facing directly towards North Korea right there through these trees you can see North Korea but yeah all right let's head to the observatory and even from here you can see North Korean uh buildings a little village over there so let's go get a good look and to get to the observatory you have to go over this long beautiful bridge right here and uh up these windy, the windy staircase over there but I think it'll be worth it we're going to get a great view I think lets see if I can squeeze through here if you want to get a good look at North Korea don't do what I did earlier come here this is it the Jo River right here so right before I left the little auditorium they played like a two and a half minute video and luckily they had English subtitles and it teaches you that that little village over there you can't see it but that's called Propaganda Village and so nobody living over there but it's just an attempt for the for the North Koreans to I don't know act like normal life's going on over there but really not much is going on look at this not much here and then look this way look at that you can just tell the difference from here to over here okay some of the houses over there you do see clothes hanging up so they're not all empty but yeah I'm sure people aren't living in every single one of those rooms I mean it is just night and day looking off in this direction and that direction it is so different it's crazy and I was reading when I came up here, this uh Monument over here is made out of bullet casings and barbed wire a little bell tower that huge gong over there what a place what a place if you get a chance uh you want to come look at North Korea you don't have to cycle up here like I did but you can drive out this direction and you'll get a great view and you can always say you've seen North Korea how exciting is that my new friend here he was saying this is his first time that he's ever seen North Korea like this and so you're from Ansan? Anan okay he's from Ansan and we had a little chat in there and I was just curious if he had ever been up this way and he was like no this is my first time and so I'm guessing not too many South Koreans come up here and see it which again is just sad you know that this is a thing you know this used to be just one country you know and so uh now yeah that's the unfortunate situation circumstances that we live in now all right, thank you so much, you're a lifesaver all right all right all right see you well that was well worth it, I'm glad I found that on the map uh again if you want to go have a peak into North Korea that is the way to do it um yeah okay so uh let's get on the road I don't know where I'm going I just want to keep going, there's another island called uh Ganghwa, something like that I'm thinking I'm just going to do a loop around that and then head kind of head toward Incheon or Seoul let's go on the road, again there it is there it is yesterday I just was not feeling it, today I feel good time to take a little break and uh eat the rest of my lunch and charge up, not just me but also my batteries so sometimes you guys ask me in the comment section like how do you charge everything when you're on your bike and camping all the time well you know when you stay at a hotel you can obviously recharge your stuff but on the road I'm always uh charging my stuff whenever I get a chance cause uh you know even even if I'm only here for like 20 minutes, I'll charge up my batteries, my phone, whatever just uh you know, every little bit helps every little bit helps and luckily here in Korea, they have areas like this charging stations and uh you know in their convenient stores and it's awesome so thank you Korea for that how's my lunch looking today? not as lively as it was earlier but I'm sure it still good got leftover fries are never that good but I bet the meat is good actually last night at the the hotel, I was so tired I just passed out, I mean I even forgot to brush my teeth, left the lights on forgot to brush my teeth didn't charge anything I at least took a shower I took a shower and washed my clothes but once I did that I laid on laid in the bed and was out I feel so much better today though I'm sure it shows in the video too ah isn't this nice? got the rice fields on one side got some low-lying mountains on both sides actually got a nice river right here you got North Korea on the horizon over there those are North Korean mountains up there you know just cruising gazing off into North Korea you know just like any old day crazy and this is what I was looking for yesterday something like this where I can camp but that one is closed off actually that one is uh kind of gated up there no chilling there I had to turn back around and go down this street England Town Kimpo I think it's actually Gimpo is what it shows on the map but Kimpo Gimpo the ks and gs are kind of confusing but here we are in England Town look at that one that is nice a nice wraparound patio balcony beautiful garden I love the windows up upstairs look at that England Town huh looks like it's going to be a huge development or they tried to I mean this street just goes all the way up and it looks like there'd be lots and spaces up there to build homes some nice modern-looking places though England Town goes straight uphill not doing that Gimpo art camping park huh hey wow look at you oh man you're a big one wow hey looks like a busy place and so it costs 40,000 for a campsite you know even if I have my own tent and everything so I'm going to pass that's like 30 bucks more than 30 bucks and so that's more than my hotel room last night sure you get all the amenities out here you get a pool there's a, I'm not sure what that is Cafe for the showers, a lot of people out here having a good time so I guess you pay for all this the atmosphere but let's keep on going still kind of early only 5:00 I feel good it's a lot cooler in the evenings and so let's just keep going around let's do it it's really nice out here though look at these homes are you kidding me a beautiful little neighborhood here people out here are not doing too bad I'd have to say with North Korea right in your backyard I'm sure they don't even think about it the map is showing that I go straight but I don't think I'm going to be able to I'm going turn the camera off all righty so even though the uh the map shows the bike course goes all the way around like the peninsula or the area the island right there you can't go past that little checkpoint and uh had a little conversation with those two guys uh super nice guys they're 20 and 21 years old you know they're just doing their military time and they said when they're done they're going to move back home and you know you know find a job or one guy was like I just want to play and so he just wants to probably just uh enjoy his youth and do whatever he wants for a while so I don't blame him and so yeah super nice guys they spoke really good English too and so if you're watching this nice to meet meet you and uh all right I guess I'm going back the opposite direction which is fine and uh beyond that point he said that only long-term residents live back there and so no outsiders so makes sense I expected that coming out this direction so I don't know why I stopped for this but I just thought it was hilarious I'm just going through a neighborhood and there's a frying pan full of croissants it's like they they burnt them or something they're like man screw this threw the whole pot out wow there's some more of them big beautiful chilies look at that those are nice I'm not sure if I can get out this way but I'll try where are you taking me from America America yeah I think this guy wants to have a little chitchat how are you? Nick, Dimitri nice to meet you from Busan from Busan to Seoul only english japanese? no Russian Korean? little bit where are you from again? Uzbekistan what do you do for work? ah construction okay manual labor that's hard work uh water? ah I have I have apple apple an apple no well I mean no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no it's okay no no no apples juice no no no no no do not no no no no no no no oh my gosh okay really really really no it's okay all right okay okay he's not letting me give it back to him thank you very much thank you thank you thank you your name? Dimitri, Dimitri Nick nice nice to meet you nice to meet you what a nice guy what a nice guy all right we have a lot of places like this out here too a lot of camping glamping places always take a shower when you can get the sweat off all right so that place is actually just a barbecue and hangout spot no camping there but uh I was able to sneak a shower the owner came out and laughed at me and so he did offer he was like actually if you go inside you can uh use the one in there as like has uh soap and everything even though the one out there had soap but uh he just kind of laughed at me and so all right let's continue on I got my shower out of the way tonight I feel good all right I think we're leaving Gimpo and we're going to Ganghwa, Ganghwa Island nobody said go to Ganghwa island everybody said go to Jeju go to Jeju I'll make it there but I want to hit as many places in Korea uh while I'm here so I have a lot of time, all the time in the world so let's go to let's go to Gangwha I've been on many many beautiful bridges here in Korea so far but this ain't one of them this is not one of them definitely a busy uh busy area over here too I'm in the city a lot of traffic not a lot of tall apartment buildings or anything like that but still pretty busy I'd say kind of back at the border again trying to go along the road uh there's a fort up here that I kind of wanted to check out but looks like there's another checkpoint not going to happen again I'm going turn the camera off all right just like I imagined can't go down this road but the guy was telling me in the morning and afternoon it's okay it's just in the evening and just at night that they don't let anyone uh use this road to go to the other side and so uh that's all right and he let me go up there and take a look at the Fort which was cool but he also said sorry no pictures so uh that's fine I mean the fort would have been awesome to camp like up at the top there just a huge patch of lovely green soft grass and I was like oh man this would be so cool to camp right in the middle of that fort uh you can go up there and you can look into North Korea again get another view but understandably it's it's closed off and so I mean you are you're right by the border it's uh you can look into North Korea literally so I understand why it's pretty protected so woo love the downhills, I'm all sweaty again though froggy that has an interesting color to it though I don't know if you want to touch it this might be the nicest uh convenience store I think I've ever been to look at this they got a nice pond yeah yeah I'm I'm I'm cycling Korea from Busan to Seoul, from Busan to here yeah. wow
so I'm from the US America America America so do you work here? oh my mommy the owner? owner. I was just saying this is the nicest one I've ever seen it is a really nice place and you're barbecuing? yeah oh nice nice nice do you want to eat? do I want to eat? well I do like barbecue and you have some corn nice do you like corn? I love corn oh it's already all grilled up do you live here? is this the home? ah okay so it's like home and the convenience store wow my son. that's your son nice to meet you hi nice to meet you i cleaned my hands ok ok that's how you say it chewy yeah, interesting that's good that's different than cool good flavor oh but it's like it's chewy huh chewy yeah thank you so much see you goodbye nice to meet you all right so I found home finally found a park huge open space Here's a little um trail right here and so there's a little seating area right here I don't know there's a bathroom over there I don't know I'm going to fall asleep and wake up early break it down and leave so hopefully it's not an issue see you guys in the morning [Music]
