[Music] the chch Evening News starts now good evening and thank you for joining us I'm Jason geola we begin in Ottawa where the liberal government says it will consider tougher penalties for car thieves amid an epidemic of auto theft across the country feds hosted a national Summit on auto theft bringing together government law enforcement and Industry leaders to discuss solutions to the crisis Matt Ingram reports on average four Autos get stolen within our community within a 24-hour period that is unacceptable it's a surge in auto theft here in Hamilton and across Ontario driven by techsavvy criminals motivated by high-profit margins and lowrisk high reward opportunities according to expert organization the equit association in 2023 we know that over 105,000 Motor Vehicles were stolen in Canada with Ontario and Quebec trending higher than the rest of the country equity's president Terry O'Brien laid out the problem at today's Auto Summit including vehicle anti- theft system regulations that haven't kept pace with technology criminals are now taking advantage of these outdated standards gaining access to a locked vehicle in under 6 seconds the Canadian Automobile Association agrees saying the feds must update the standards to force manufacturers to make cars more theft proof and that would push the manufacturers to be compliant so that it actually has an effect on the types of security features we have in our cars automakers say they are taking steps to improve security features but criminals eventually counter the improvements this is a constant battle with organized crime to stay one step ahead Brian Kingston from the Canadian vehicle manufacturers Association says stricter laws and enforcement are needed we have to Target organized crime groups and close our ports the Prime Minister says tougher laws are on the table we're also looking at further strengthening penalties for anyone who participates in auto theft stolen vehicles from the greater Toronto and Hamilton area often end up on shipping containers destined for Europe Africa and the Middle East Canada Border Services Agency wouldn't say what percentage of containers leaving Canada are inspected but did provide data indicating more and more stolen cars are being found leaving the country to help the feds announced at today's Summit they're giving the cbsa $8 million to conduct more investigations Hamilton police were also recently given extra money to F auto theft $900,000 from The Province over 3 years what that looks like for Hamilton Police Service is two additional investigators as well as an analyst the latest numbers show solving auto theft crime is difficult between 2019 and 20122 less than 10% of cases were cleared by Hamilton Police and the same trend is being seen in Niagara where about 10% of cases have been cleared in recent years the level of sophistication in this type of crime is increasing and that's provincially communities in Halton have seen the steepest rise in auto theft in our region the ladies figures from hton police show the numbers of thefts have skyrocketed from 547 in 2020 to more than 1,300 in 2022 after today's Summit in Ottawa the FED say they will take further steps to address the problem including Banning devices that criminals use to copy the wireless signals of a vehicle's remote keyless entry a key tool being used to gain entry to some of the most targeted Vehicles it's been six years since the death of a child who is in the care of a School for the Blind in Branford the school is owned and operated by the government of Ontario Samuel Brown's family says they still don't know what happened to him in his final hours and as L McGee reports they're now allowed to sue the province Samuel Brown was born with a genetic condition that left him blind deaf and non-verbal he was a student at the W Ross McDonald School for the Blind a boarding school in Branford owned and operated by the province of Ontario his caregivers were the last to spend time with him before he died but have given little explanation as to what happened the coroner's report said his death was due to natural causes but an autopsy cited pneumonia a provincial inquest that finished nearly 5 years after his death produced 21 recommendations for school improvements but that inquest did not allow them to hold anyone accountable in particular the last employee to see him alive now that the inquest is over the family is allowed to sue the province for negligence and has filed a lawsuit after Samuel supervisor failed to obey the subpoena that was subpoena to her and failed to testify as to what she saw on the night of Samuel Brown's death it became absolutely necessary to do a loss the family released the statement today saying quote words fail us we are in disbelief that Samuel Brown is no longer with us Samuel was non-judgmental peaceful and kind we continue the fight for justice and are grateful beyond measure to Canadians for supporting us for so long the brown lawsuit is not the first time the school has been sued a class action lawsuit detailed disturbing allegations such as staff kicking students and other abuse an $8 million settlement was reached in 2017 before the case went to trial chch news reached out to the Ministry of Education which released a statement saying in part we will be using the inquest recommendations to build Upon Our work to improve the pdsb school system to keep students safe and ensure this does not happen again L McGee chch news Hamilton police officer Constable Brandon Turk was given 7even days to resign from his post or be fired the decision follows a police services act hearing Turk pled guilty for two incidences involving careless use of his firearm in July of 2022 he was caught on video dancing with his firearm while on duty the year prior he also pulled the trigger of an empty gun on a fellow officer Hamilton Police released a statement acknowledging the decision but did not provide further comment Turk has apologized for his actions and while there is no indication from him or his lawyer on plans to appeal he has 30 days to do so it was a long day on the road for many drivers today due to slow moving traffic most of the day frustration began this morning in and out and around Hamilton op say a disabled tractor trailer shut down several Lanes of the Burlington Skyway from about 6: to 7:30 a.m. three right lanes on the Toronto bound qw were closed for almost 2 hours according to officials it took almost 2 hours to get a heavy tow truck to the scene shutdown had a ripple effect on traffic throughout the Hamilton region the cars coming to a crawl on both the Toronto bound QEW and York Boulevard and shifting over from uh traffic to weather we'll join uh Steve rck joins us now with a first look at the forecast hey Steve he Jason and uh again today we did have the fog to start the day it didn't blow off as fast as I thought it might so we didn't get quite as much sun as we anticipated overnight tonight we're looking for some Cloud to roll through and don't be too surprised if there's a little bit of drizzle as this front slides through Us in the overnight period and could linger with us into tomorrow as well but warm temperatures tomorrow warmer certainly uh than normal for the time of year and well above what we've had Saturday some more showers could roll through our area as well and then after that we're getting back into more seasonal kinds of conditions we give you all the details shortly government for taking too long to provide relief for media companies this after being granted 40 million and Regulatory Relief by the feds what's surprising to one journalism scholar we spoke with on trending now is that entire shows are being scrapped more importantly is the effect on audiences so the fact that we're act that they are actually cutting news broadcasts that exist means that a a a a Lodge welcome back for the last five seasons the Niagara ice dogs have not been a model franchise on or or off the ice on today's Sportsline podcast with Bubba O'Neal play-by-play announcer Steve Clark revealed that OHL fans in the nagar region will soon have a reason to be proud Sunday uh they had North Bay in the building they had over 5,000 people there you know for a team that's eight points out of the last playoff spot in a league that 16 out of 20 teams make the playoffs the fans there I don't know if resilient is the right word dedicated but they do love showing up for their Junior Hockey they're very proud of showing up in a beautiful building still like the Meridian Center and and they they want this team to see Su see they really have had embraced this team as the regions team and I think they want that back and and that's the the fans are second to none because a run like this I mean I I joke with people I said 2019 to show you how long it's been since the ice dogs made the playoffs Jason Robertson was a part of that team right because he was picked up from Kingston and uh you know so it it's it's been a while and that was the year in 2019 that they were supposed to make the run to the final they got upset by aswa in the second round uh and then since then it's been no playoffs at all yeah it it has been great and I think you talk about this the franchise turning around this weekend actually might have been a little example of it that they they're playing you know what was it five out of six points yeah you got to take you know what take baby steps right and uh you know Sudbury um on the Thursday very good team uh one one of the top teams in in in the conference an Eastern Conference that's that's gone Haywire in terms of how close it is um outshot badly but the goal tender played great they they got a point and then and then then they lost the lead in the third period too then they go beat peterb and peterb is really stripped it down to the bone but they beat them in overtime and then they come back and beat a North Bay team that's also challenging for the conference lead and looked really good in doing it and it was an exciting game had a lot of back and forth action again the young players shining for Niagara they've got a couple couple real special young players who I think are Corner um Kevin he is won a forward 24 goals on a team that's 10th place is something else he leads the OHL in shots he's exciting he's NHL draft eligible um he's ranked I think in that 90 to 100 Mark right now but I feel he'll be drafted by the NHL and they have Ryan robri who um they drafted second overall 16 years old he's 6'2 he's over 190 lb he looks like like a like a man playing just with that size and he is tops I believe in rookie scoring and just got his first ever OHL hattrick I don't think he's draft eligible for a couple years but I guarantee you if he keeps on this trajectory he'll be he'll be that first round pick that he you'll be listing him like you were with the Petra Angelos and the Phil thomasinos and theil Thomases in the future maybe even a world junior opportunity definitely down the yeah I think I think next year I'd be shocked if he wasn't playing in the u8s and then I'd be shocked if he wasn't considered down the road again if he keeps on this trajectory he's that special a player all right let's head over to Steve Ruck now who has your long range forecast hey Steve okay and we've had uh something like 16 days Jason of nice conditions or certainly warmer than normal conditions but uh as we get through the weekend into next week which is a busy week we have pancake Tuesday we've got Valentine's Day on Wednesday we're going to get back to more seasonal conditions although not seeing any big storms coming our way that's kind of the bigger picture what's happening for us right now well you may already notice a little rain or drizzle happening in your area we do have a low pressure system actually well to the north of us but a cold front will slide through it's not going to be cold it's actually bringing warmer air with us and as we get into tomorrow we could see some showers another system coming Saturday could bring us also a little more rain not a lot of rain but a little bit but after that we're back into a Northerly flow of air which means we're back to uh normal highs in around the freezing Mark maybe a degree or two below so that's kind of what we're in for for the next few days so we go from really warm tomorrow to uh cooler or back to seasonal in the next two or three days tonight's lows look like this with a little bit of drizzle anywhere from 3 degrees to five maybe six degrees five in the Hamilton area remember it should be minus 10 this time of year that's a change of about 12 to 15° uh in one day in overnight temperatures so that's rather amazing and uh but it is coming to an end your almanac for tomorrow sun will be up at 726 a.m. down at 5:42 p.m. maybe we'll see some sun that might be optimistic though later on in the day more likely just cloud and on again off again showers normal highs around minus two we're starting the day plus 6 plus 7 depending on where you are with some drizzle for your morning commute tomorrow and your Friday planner looks like this we could get up to 11 or 10° depending on where it gets tomorrow and again uh on again off again showers but starting with some drizzle in the morning and if we get any heavier kinds of rain it would happen noon into the afternoon and then we could see a little bit of Sun as well with that after that though things start to change as we get into Saturday that second system coming up from the South will change will bring us a 60% chance of showers 7 degrees to high so the temperatur is heading down as we get into the next few days again Valentine's Day on Wednesday we're going to be in around minus one but again uh could see cooler temperatures but not seeing any major storms coming our way Jason all right thanks Steve remember you can tune in to our newscast wherever you go visit ch.com to stream us live that's it for this edition of The Evening News morning live
