there it is Merlion or how the locals call it, Merlion interesting story about Merlion and the name of Singapore uh do you guys know why Singapore is  named Singapore? well let me tell you you know we were just in South Sumatra we were just in Palembang when I was there I told you about the Sryvijaya Empire and how it ruled all of Sumatra half a Java Malaysia from a Thailand Borneo for something like 500 years for five centuries this the Sryvijaya Empire ruled over this part of the world and well sometime around the 12th  century 13th century one of the princes of the Sryvijaya Empire he came over here to this island I think he was called Tamasek at the time and I think he went on a hunting trip or something like that and when he got back they asked him what he saw and he said he saw he said he saw a lion and well he couldn't have seen a lion because there's no Lions here this isn't Africa but Singa in uh I guess Indonesian or the language they were speaking means lion and Pura means City and so it was actually called Singapura but when the Dutch not the Dutch the English when they were here when they colonized Singapore and Malaysia apparently, Singapura was too hard for them to say and so they changed the name from Singapura to Singapore I don't know I thought it'd be a lot bigger it could be a lot bigger let's see if I can get it  without seeing a screen okay I get it? I get it? or do I just look stupid probably just looks stupid you know why half of it's a mermaid? yeah it was the fishing village the Merlion park has been erected as a symbol to Welcome All visitors to Singapore it was formally installed at a ceremony on 15th September 1972 by Mr Lee Kuan Yew the prime minister so Lee Kuan Yew was he the the first president? first Prime Minister first prime minister is there a president here? yes have you seen the dollar note? the dollar note? okay he's on the dollar note okay I haven't taken a good look at the money yet and uh I asked him if there's any statues or anything like that of Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore and he said of course there are it's all these tall buildings these are all the uh the statues commemorating Lee Kuan Yew because in a way he built all this all right next stop today we are in Little India this is the place I want to be we're gonna go eat some good food I'm hoping I'm just kind of following them so today I'm joined by Daniel's mom and dad so Daniel and Agnes they had to work today and so uh Daniel's parents volunteered to take me out today I told him they didn't have to do that but they insisted so getting to hang out with the parents today awesome I'm hungry again it smells so good in here this food makes me happy biriyani? something different? mutton Biryani okay that is a lot of rice okay and uh what are you gonna order? rice Rice yourself? oh rice and then a few different things okay uh I was thinking maybe the cheese nan and butter chicken that's nice it's good okay yeah this looks all amazing too but I'm a fan of the butter chicken and cheese nan this is cheese nan? okay yep okay there's cheese in there just making sure that's it? okay okay so I went with the uh the butter chicken because that's my favorite look at that oh yeah look at that color all right oh man that is good oh man that's kind of sweet almost   they got a bunch of different stuff they got like fish curry what is this mutton, some vegetables a few different curries so they're kind of doing the uh the nasi campur style like white rice and a bunch of different things so, I couldn't pass up the uh the butter chicken this is the best thing ever this might be some of the best butter chicken I've ever had and I'm not just saying that I mean look how creamy and delicious that looks and paired up with this uh nice and soft cheese nan here it doesn't get any better than this let's not get any better than this what is it? 300. wow they just told me it's a 300 fine if you don't clear your table off is that right? that is crazy uh but yeah here I'm sorry ABC Nasi Kandor in Singapore, unbelievable. you are doing YouTube? i'm doing YouTube my channel name, Nick K We see a lot of YouTube also ok well, take a look, i hope you enjoy it but I've been traveling through Indonesia a little bit of Malaysia now I'm in Singapore. Sri Lanka? are you from Sri Lanka? I was just talking about Sri Lanka I was in Japan and I had Sri Lankan food for the first time is it okay to travel to Sri Lanka now? it's okay okay I've been debating whether to go to Sri Lanka okay okay well hopefully I'll get to go there soon yeah okay nice to meet you okay thank you Singapore in the Indian village come check it out that couple is from Sri Lanka oh yeah yeah wait and so they charge 300 if you don't clear your table? wow Singapore really does have a lot of strict rules don't they? the fine City that goes for uh fast food restaurants and everything? wow so we just came to the uh the Indian market it was down the street and over here they're cooking up some pretty damn good looking stuff wow doing some sugar cane juice I think this is the first tastes like a vegetable I've invaded a kitchen again so we just came to this place for breakfast and I ordered the carrot cake there seems to be these types of places all  over Malaysia(Singapore*) just these cafeterias a bunch of different places selling food and it all looks good it all looks freaking delicious I mean this place nasi padang, we got Indian food Indonesia food over here they got some stuff that I've I think I'd really like to eat they got some chicken sandwiches and tuna rolls and some wraps and that kind of stuff they got the noodle guys over here drinks yeah but I ordered the carrot cake it's not going to be your typical carrot cake that you would find probably anywhere else I wanted to pay let me get the drinks okay okay yeah a little bit sambal all right that looks good thank you yeah I don't think I've ever had this you think this is Singaporean food okay so uh it's an egg kind of like an omelet mixed in with some uh some glutinous rice really really soft really subtle flavor not much going on there   I'm sure you got to mix in a lot of the sambal mix it in with the egg the onions that's all right I can do that the sambal is good but it's much, I don't know saucier or creamier than uh Indonesian sambal for you like it's a little more sweeter i like this, this is good have a good day see you alrighty so I'm on my own today Daniel and Agnes they got to go to work his parents they got jobs they got to go to work and well they kicked me out but that's fine uh gives me a chance to explore Singapore on foot you know this is the kind of stuff I like doing anyway so uh I have no idea where I'm gonna go uh I know where the MRT station is from there we're gonna get on a train and we're gonna go somewhere here in Singapore do a little bit of Jalan Jalan I was asking his dad yesterday I was like wait a second this might be a silly question but I mean are there cities in Singapore? you know Singapore is the country he's like oh no it's it Singapore city and the country you know it's a City Country basically so but it's also it's obviously divided up in the districts and that kind of deal but   okay let's explore Singapore City and I think it might be all right look at this nice uh foot paths nice sidewalks it's a beautiful day today I'm rambling let's get on with the video Let's Do It all right so this is what we're gonna do we're gonna go to a park and we're gonna go check out some World War II Memorial type stuff and so   yeah we're gonna get a chance to test out  Singapore's uh public transportation today   maybe take a bus we'll try the MRT and uh see what it's like but first up we're gonna catch a bus don't know how to catch a bus do I need uh I got cash luckily I got cash but you know I don't have like a commuter pass or anything like that so let's see how it works wow that's pretty cool too the uh I just noticed the buses have GPS on them and it just moved and so I guess you can track where the buses are or the bus that you need I'm guessing this isn't the bus that I need and so maybe it doesn't pick it up but this bus just moved that's pretty crazy pulling a tram making a tram? yeah okay thank you guys okay a pulley is what they're uh they're making here, a tram? that cuts through the neighborhoods Maybe I don't know I don't know what he was trying to tell me uh sorry do I pay now or later do I first time on the bus here in Singapore I feel like an idiot first time on the bus thanks i guess no change on that one sitting up here at the front yeah how does that work last one I paid two dollars, this one five dollars he was just like get on the bus dude all right so I've made it to the Bukit Batok  Nature Park and uh we're gonna go for a little stroll I want to end up somewhere over here but I want to take this route right here go see the water um I'm not sure if we can do the Quarry Cliff route we'll see but let's get away from the street let's go for a stroll into nature in the middle of Singapore look at that what is that 3D topographic scan that's kind of cool you're scanning what the drainage yeah oh okay and here you're looking at it on the screen right there yeah   interesting do you work for the city or the or how does that work? okay awesome all right guys wow dang look at the size of that that's actually not too big when I was in Batam and I was in my hotel there was a river that ran right along next to the hotel and I could outside my window I could see into the creek and I look out there and there's a lizard probably the size if not longer than this log   kid you not from head to toe this massive lizard floating swimming in the river so that guy back there that's actually a pretty small one but it's crazy uh you know you might see some monkeys some wild boars some inoshishi out here I saw a sign that says don't feed the animals duh I mean do you really have to tell people  that but keep an eye out for some some wildlife all right it's a pretty good walk right here   I thought it'd be a lot flatter than this nope I mean I've been climbing up for a while now hopefully I can get to a spot maybe have a view that'd be nice make all this climbing worth it maybe not just shoots you out into a parking lot more stairs awesome let's see where we are we are here I guess this is a World War II Memorial site this guy right here okay let's go have a look   okay so this is interesting it's saying back in World War II there used to be two memorials that were once dedicated to the Japanese who were killed here during World War II   it was a monument or a memorial that was built in 1942 by the POWs this is what it looked like and so maybe if you were a British POW a  yeah I guess that's probably it, a British pow   you had to build a fort to honor the Japanese who had died here at the Battle here in Singapore   and so they said that that Memorial was destroyed before the Allied Forces came back   and so yeah there used to be a Japanese war memorial here and there was it did say that the the Japanese allowed the POWs to build another Memorial to honor their fallen soldiers but that might be a way to save face for a lot of the the Japanese soldiers the Imperial Army of Japan   because what they did was pretty horrific and brutal not just here in Singapore but throughout   Malaysia and Indonesia all throughout the Pacific in the Philippines in Korea and China and so that's interesting there used to be a Japanese war memorial here I guess just for three years   but uh man I'm sweating I'm sweating so if you want to continue walking have you gone to bukit? not yet okay you go inside there you're going all the way okay there's a traffic light yep you cross the traffic light  and there's another big park right over there right ah yes okay and you just stand right just turn right you turn right all the way you'll see one overhead Bridge there's a turn left you just turn left in okay all right yeah I can walk out and then over there there's a lot of  link to many places oh nice if you have a long day up go up to the top oh all the way to the top you come down uh-huh and then halfway, when coming down it turns left you can come down, it's all the trail you can go and there are many places to explore you can walk all the way to .... if you have the time ok cheers, enjoy wow okay so um I came up here thinking there would be something up here to see but uh no nothing and it says no video No cameras uh protected place and there's a picture of a guy pointing a gun at somebody with his hands up so I'm guessing that means we shouldn't go that way we should turn back around and go where this nice old man was telling me to go oh man are you kidding me Lookout Point is closed for repair from the 30th of July 22nd to the end of the month so the place that I want to go check out can't even go there and earlier I was just kind of kidding about seeing a tiger this is saying Tigers used to be found in the wild in Singapore wow I mean I guess that's not surprising Sumatra is close by I doubt there's any in Malaysia but there might be up in the mountains I don't know but yeah I guess it's not surprising that there would be tigers in the rain forest in the jungle here all right so I've made my way to another Park we are now at it's uh quite a ways away from where I just was It started raining on me and luckily it stopped raining for a little while and so we can go for a little walk hey are you always here sir? uh I'm just visiting actually and so I just I was at riyong baru is that what it's called? so I saw there was a park over here   such an interesting-looking dog I've  never seen one like this a mixture of like a Labrador and a and like a pit bull kind of it's like it it's like a very strong dog hey no I don't think she likes me have a good day thank you thank you okay   so right over here they have a little dog run they have it all here in Singapore so I'm sure it's a very comfortable place to  live for singaporeans and so who do they have to thank for that? well like Daniel's dad says like look around all the tall buildings and all the all the nice things here it's all kind of  built from Lee Kuan Yew the first Prime Minister you know after he was kicked out of the Federation of Malaysia he started taking things into his own hands he uh you know maybe controversially or you know there are a few things that you look at like hey that's not what you should be doing you know for example he banned free speech and he banned political opponents and I read he went so far as locking up people who spoke out against him or tried to run against him and uh you know he tried his best to eliminate corruption and you know I read that maybe they they put people who do corruption in Singapore depending on how bad it is I heard they can give them the death penalty but Daniel's dad was like no that's not true you know they just get a really harsh sentence and so Singapore is known for being a very safe place to invest and do business for foreign investors and so you know a lot of things that he did might seem a little excessive but you know it seemed to work out it seemed to work out when Singapore was kicked out of Malaysia something like two-thirds of the population they were living in slums and I read a lot of people who are addicted to drugs and there was high unemployment and that sort of thing so he was able to turn it around and nowadays apparently there's hardly any unemployment and there's good infrastructure Singapore has the best infrastructure in the world I'm sure their hospitals are amazing for their education is amazing sure they probably pay higher taxes and and that kind of deal but you get to live in a place like this so anyways it's just so nice to see people out enjoying themselves yes okay I think uh I'm gonna end this video or I don't know where this video started and uh it's gonna end here though um tomorrow I'm gonna go to uh Johor Bahru just right across the river my time in Singapore is coming to an end so I think I'm just gonna make like one long  Singapore video so maybe starting with where am I going to start this video I'm not really sure but if you made it this far I appreciate it hopefully I can come back to Singapore and do some more exploring because I've enjoyed it here   and yeah hopefully I can be back but from here we got to keep going because I can't afford to stay here right now and uh all right thanks for  watching and I'll see you guys in the next video
