News Live [Music] tonight the new worries now hitting America's banking system so this is an active institution there is a bridge Bank we are looking for a buyer and that will occur at some point is our money in safe hands that's the question being asked in homes across the country as banking stocks tumbled and dragged financial markets down we'll report on where things stand plus this is pretty remarkable what you're seeing because this is evidence that what Russia was trying to do wasn't just to take over parts of Ukrainian land but to turn it into Russia Beyond a gunfire and bombing attacks there's another battle playing out in Ukraine the literal cultural War being fought on the front lines in tonight's Prime Focus and [Music] we sit down with real life married Electro pop Duo behind some of the top indie rock hits across the country in tonight's Prime playlist the basis of pop music and it's at its core is like songs about the human experience that are that are both uplifting but also like feel good in your ear good evening everyone I'm Lindsey Davis thank you so much for streaming with us we're following those stories and much more including the high stakes case playing out in a Texas court that could withhold abortion pills and impact more than 60 million women across the country plus we go to the Black Sea where Russia says they plan to recover that downed U.S drone where they could exploit and what the Biden Administration is saying and how one of the largest cell phone providers in the world just got much bigger thanks to one of the world's most recognizable actors our correspondents are fanned out across the country covering those stories and much more for us tonight but we do begin with a heightened alert not only about banks in the U.S but banks around the world nearly one week after the biggest bank collapse since the Great Recession the stock price of one of Europe's largest banks in a plunge to an all-time low the turmoil was also felt on Wall Street today the Dow dropped about 280 points it had been down more than 500 at one point experts say despite the plunging stocks widespread bank failures are highly unlikely prior to last week not a single one of the roughly 4 700 commercial banks in the U.S had failed

in the last two years and tonight authorities are reiterating this key message to Americans your money is safe Ariel reschef leads us off tonight from New York tonight fears of a banking crisis sending stocks tumbling on Wall Street and around the world overseas Credit Suisse one of Europe's biggest banks plunging 24 percent to an all-time low after its largest shareholder the Saudi National Bank said it won't pump more money into the struggling bank and here at home looming concern over America's Regional Banks First Republic stock diving 21 percent after its credit rating was downgraded into so-called junk territory but analysts say no matter what happens your bank account is secure if you have your money in First Republic it is still safe there's an implicit guarantee by the feds over the weekend that said depositors aren't going to get hurt here we're going to look at all the regional Banks and make sure the depositors get their money back it comes as Federal investigations into the failed Silicon Valley Bank ramp up sources tell ABC News bonuses and Company stock sales are now under the microscope a trust held by the CEO Greg Becker sold nearly 3.6 million dollars in stock just weeks before the bank collapsed and there are growing questions about how Regulators miss the warning signs the bank was at high risk of failure this is not really rocket science so and obviously people made money off of that why didn't the Regulators pick it up Silicon Valley Bank was not forced to undergo stress tests like the bigger Banks after regulations were rolled back under the Trump Administration with support from Republicans and some Democrats but critics argue the Federal Reserve was still responsible for supervising the bank there were numerous red flags waving all over the place that this bank was operating in a high-risk Reckless manner the Federal Reserve supervisors should have seen this should have forced this bank to change its activities to reduce its risk a lot of discussion now that this could have been potentially preventable area reschef joins us now live and Ariel they're now lawmakers who are calling for tighter regulations on these Banks right that that's exactly right Lindsay Senator Elizabeth Warren is leading the charge to try to reinstate those regulations that were rolled back in 2018 which would mean that these smaller Banks would be subject to the same types of stress tests as the bigger Banks every year Lindsay aerial Russia for us thanks so much Ariel now to get another close call on the nation's Runway is under investigation by the FAA a United flight was forced to abort takeoff from Reagan National Airport when a republic Airlines plane crossed the runway without clearance there have been at least seven close calls reported this year alone here's ABC's Transportation correspondent Gio Benitez tonight after a string of recent near collisions involving commercial Jets another close call reported at Reagan National Airport an air traffic controller warning a United pilot not to take off oh yeah the FAA says on March 7th the Republic Airways flight crossed a Runway without clearance as the United Airlines flight Was preparing to take off on the same one that makes at least seven close calls already this year Secretary of Transportation Pete butterjudge vowing all hands are on Deck to investigate the issue How concerned are you I'm very concerned this year we're on track to have more than 20 and even one is one that I would not like to see happen at the FAA safety Summit today leaders holding a sweeping review of what's going wrong and how to calm the Public's concern flying is safe but in order to keep it that way we have to be relentlessly focused and frankly it is our duty to be concerned the union representing air traffic controllers saying there's a staffing issue currently with 1200 fewer ATC operators than 10 years ago and emphasized it is training its Workforce to face the post-pandemic travel surge Gio Benitez joins us now Geo it's been many years of course since there's been a deadly crash in the United States but how concerning are all these close calls right now for Aviation officials well it's very concerning Lindsay and you're absolutely right it's been 14 years since America saw the last deadly commercial crash here in this country but no doubt about it the NTSB chairwoman says that the absence of a fatality does not mean the presence of safety Gio Benitez for us our thanks to you now to the race to find that 30 million dollar American drone now at the bottom of the Black Sea after being intercepted by Russian fighter jets the U.S defense secretary is calling Russia's actions dangerous and Reckless as U.S officials hold high-level calls with the Russian counterparts but will Russia recover the Drone before the U.S ABC's Chief Global

Affairs anchor Martha raddatz has the latest tonight Russia and the U.S racing to recover that multi-million dollar Reaper drone from the bottom of the Black Sea after that Russian war plane collided with the unmanned vehicle defense secretary Lloyd Austin today in a rare call with his Russian counterpart the first since October delivering a strong message the United States will continue to fly and to operate wherever international law allows and it is incumbent upon Russia to operate his military aircraft in a safe and professional manner which was not the case in this incident over a period of about 30 minutes two Russian fighter jets made 19 close passes around the Drone sprayed fuel on it multiple times and then one of the Jets on a final pass approaching the Drone vertically and colliding with the drone's rear propeller we know that the intercept was intentional we know that the aggressive behavior was intentional the physical contact of those two not sure yet but a U.S Air Force officials said they do not think the pilot hit the drone on purpose saying the Russian pilot was simply incompetent and flat out dumb Russia denies the fighter jet collided with the Drone but U.S

officials say video evidence confirms it as for the recovery of the Drone chairman milley said that may be difficult in four to five thousand feet of water it probably broke up they're probably not a lot to recover frankly as far as the law loss of anything of sensitive intelligence Etc as normal we would take and we did take mitigating measures so we are quite confident that whatever whatever laws of value is no longer a value Martha raddatz joins us now and Martha we just heard chairman Millie there talking about mitigating measures taken so that Russians won't be able to gain any valuable intelligence from the Drone if they find it explain what that means well Lindsay the Drone operators were actually able to gain some control over the Drone even after the collision and they were able to wipe out or scrub all the sensitive information remotely and render the Drone in operable even if it is recovered by the Russians Lindsay all right Martha Raditz for us thanks so much Martha in Texas the high stakes legal Showdown over the abortion pill of federal judges deciding whether to ban it nationwide now even though the drug was approved by the FDA more than 20 years ago ABC's Maria Villarreal was inside that courtroom and has this report tonight all eyes on a Texas judge whose decision could pull a key abortion pill off the market in a ruling that could affect millions of women Nationwide the fda's more than 20-year approval of the drug mifoprestone challenged by the alliance defending Freedom a Christian conservative legal advocacy group the lawsuit claiming the FDA exceeded its regulatory Authority when it approved the drug any Court to look at the law and to look at the science should agree that the FDA has failed its responsibility to protect women and girls and that it's time to remove these drugs from the market or at a minimum to put back important safeguards on their use the FDA standing by their approval stadium vivipristone is safe and effective for the medical termination of inner uterine pregnancy under certain conditions calling the adf's claims without Merit today U.S District Judge Matthew casemerick a trump appointee hearing Arguments for more than four hours Julie Sims was in the courtroom my main concern is is the babies that is my main concern a ruling to suspend the fda's approval would temporarily take mifiprestone off the market only in clinic procedures would be allowed in states where abortion is legal according to the gutmocker Institute medication abortions account for more than half of all abortions in the U.S if a person has been approved for I think 23 years it's more it's safer than Tylenol it's safer than penicillin so many in the medical field touting the drug safety Maria Villarreal joins us now Maria what's the expectation once the judge reaches a ruling well you know Lindsay this is likely to face an appeal regardless of the outcome it would eventually end up in the fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and some are even predicting it could go all the way up to the U.S Supreme Court

all right Maria our thanks to you joining us now for more context and Analysis is Michelle bratcher Goodwin who's a Chancellor's professor at the University of California Irvine and the author of policing the womb invisible women and the criminalization of motherhood Michelle we thank you so much for joining us tonight just curious to get your immediate reaction to What played out today in Texas what we saw is that a judge who has been sought after whose opinions about abortion are already well known seem to give a sense that he's willing to listen to and perhaps defer to the logic of those who brought this lawsuit that should be concerning not just for individuals who see this as a real travesty and as its own version of lawlessness but it should be a concern to anyone who has a concern about the FDA being able to approve any kind of drug a drug that could be used during this period of covid a drug that could be used for transgender affirming care a drug that could be used for any kind of medical relief that a particular group might be offended by and the judge zeroed in on the legality of mailing a substance that causes abortion and The Comstock act which is a Civil War era law and give us some background on this law and how it connects to this modern day issue that's a really good question so the comstack ACT goes back to 1873 so it's post-civil War but the impetus for it actually roots in the Civil War itself Anthony Comstock who became the Inspector General for the United States Postal Service was a person who was anti-vice and believed it was important to Stamp Out Vice and this included information that would be shared through the mail this came to be understood as stamping out messages that were lewd and lascivious and that was stretched to reach abortion medications contraceptive medications abortion and contraceptive use goes back far in the United States back to the time of the pilgrims and Indigenous people with the Comstock act it was seen as an effort to not only ban those substances being transported in the mail but also so images that were thought to be lewd and lascivious it's worth noting some of the racial implications of this because images of American lynchings were frequently sent through the mail somehow The Comstock act did not reach that those images were thought to be permissible while some others not do you foresee this getting all the way to the Supreme Court and if so what would that mean it's a case that we it's going to be interesting to see because if this case is appeal that is to say if the government loses then the case goes to the fifth circuit which has been a circuit hostile to matters involving contraception and abortion which means that the government might lose again and then it's possible that the case goes up before the United States Supreme Court how do you think that these battles about abortion could potentially impact Women's Health beyond the scope of pregnancy be it for diseases like polycystic ovarian syndrome and endometriosis to even the treatment of cancer these medications also help with other kinds of conditions and that is what is so worrying and was a concession even made by those who brought the suit today in that this is a highly unusual case where you have individuals challenging the authority and the medical expertise of the FDA and it's worth noting that while there's been rhetoric that there was a rush to judgment by the FDA in approving this drug the FDA took 54 months before approving this drug and in that same year that this drug was approved the average drug was approved in 15 months Michelle bratcher Goodwin Chancellor's professor at the University of California Irvine and the author of policing a woman visible women and the criminalization of motherhood we so appreciate your time and insight really appreciate that thank you thank you thank you so much turning now to the latest on the investigation's dogging former president Trump an impossible indictment hanging over his 2024 campaign former adult Entertainer Stormy Daniels met with prosecutors today as the Manhattan D.A is continuing its criminal investigation into former president Trump's role in making a hush money payment to Daniels at the end of his 2016 presidential campaign meanwhile former Trump attorney Michael Cohen testified for a second time before a grand jury Cohen said he was the one who paid Daniels 130 thousand dollars and staying in New York in a mysterious fire breaking out in a luxury building just hours after the FBI arrested an exiled Chinese billionaire at a one-time close Ally of Steve Bannon ABC's investigative reporter Aaron kontersky has those details tonight investigators are looking into a mysterious fire in a luxury high-rise on the upper east side of Manhattan that occurred just hours after the FBI arrested this exiled Chinese billionaire who once worked closely with Trump allies Steve Bannon federal agents taking guavenge into custody just after 6 a.m inside his 32 million dollar Penthouse six hours later the agents were still inside when the fire started forcing them to evacuate Al Eunice responded in less than four minutes we encountered heavy fire and smoke on the 18th floor of this structure which is 37 stories high guo splitting his time between the penthouse and this 50 000 square foot mansion while Federal prosecutors say he was orchestrating a billion dollar fraud lining his pockets with the proceeds his 152 foot 30 million dollar yacht lady May is where Bannon was arrested back in 2020 for allegedly defrauding investors of his we build the wall campaign Bannon has not been charged in this case we're told the fire was reported as smoke coming from a light fixture but the fire marshal is still working to determine why it occurred and whether it was intentionally set otherwise Lindsay it is an incredible coincidence and without any firm conclusion the fire did not come up when Gua appeared today in court to plead not guilty Lindsay quite a coincidence Aaron thank you in San Antonio police are reporting that seven people have been hospitalized after a tree fell in the city zoo all patients have been transported to a local hospital after a branch unexpectedly broken fell from a large tree and then hit a group of visitors the zoo security and EMT responded quickly while San Antonio police and the fire department responded within minutes next tonight to the seven sheriff's deputies arrested and charged with murder following the death of an inmate in Virginia the deputies claim he became combative and had to be physically restrained while being transferred to a mental health facility the inmate later died our chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas reports tonight these seven Virginia deputies accused of murdering a man with mental health issues at a state Psychiatric Hospital the prosecutors saying today the deputies killed 28 year old otieno using excessive force in Cruel fashion roughly a week ago among the disturbing accusations allegedly caught on video the seven deputies holding otno down for 12 minutes even as he's handcuffed it's just cruel and a demonstration of power that is unlawful I mean it killed him a preliminary cause of death asphyxiation and the prosecutor says there's another video from before he was transported allegedly showing otno being punched in the chest and pepper sprayed by three of the deputies while he was in the cell alone not posing a danger to anyone deputies are also accused of a cover-up with prosecutors claiming that they wash otno's handcuffs and did not call the Virginia State Police to investigate for more than three hours after otieno died at the hospital authorities say the Henrico sheriff's deputies brought otno to the hospital on March 6 at 3 58 pm to admit him as a patient State investigators were told he became combative during the admission process but the prosecutor said today there was no evidence of otno being combative Pierre Thomas joins us now Pierre what comes next for the seven sheriff's deputies well Lindsay if they're convicted they face up to 40 years in prison but one of the attorneys for one of the officers said today when all the evidence comes in his client will be Vindicated so much more to come Lindsay all right we'll be standing by Pierre Thomas our thanks to you pleasure we're tracking a major cross-country storm moving East at this hour putting 18 states on alert from California to Michigan bringing heavy snow rain flooding and strong winds a landslide was triggered in San Clemente California hitting three apartment buildings and forcing residents there to evacuate and a nor'easter drop nearly three feet of snow on parts of New York Massachusetts and Vermont let's go straight to ABC's senior meteorologist Rob Marciano Rob what can we expect next well we're certainly feeling those cold winds behind the Nor'easter aren't we Lindsay now the West Coast storm is really starting to stretch out and it's going to be impacting a lot of States really from Mexico all the way to Canada they're the advisories into the upper Great Lakes and flood watches now for the Southwest that's where the heavy rain is going to be over the next several hours and then the heavy snow is going to start to develop over the four corners in the San Juans of Colorado we'll see probably over a foot of snow there Denver is going from 70 sunny and almost 70 today to snow tomorrow and that swath of snow maybe two to eight inches of it from Omaha through Minneapolis and Duluth boy they've seen a near record-breaking season there the warm sector mostly rain Chicago Detroit back to St Louis and threat for severe storms Over Texas San Antonio to Shreveport and Dallas really in the bullseye through Texarkana and across the Red River damaging winds and a few tornadoes possible through tomorrow night Lindsay all right Rob Marciano our thanks to you still much more I had to get to on Prime coming up a sinking car with a three-year-old in the back seat the dramatic moments as police officers rushed to rescue the child but next in our Prime Focus is the fight is waged on the front lines in Ukraine there is another battle Brewing over Heritage how far some ukrainians are going to reject Russian culture during a really long period of time they told us that we are one people but a ukrainians already understood that it's not true whenever news breaks the crush of families here in Poland here in Kentucky no match for the Tornado from Monterey Park California on the ground in Ukraine reporting from Uvalde Texas NBC News right there everywhere from the scene of that deadly missile strike in Dinuba Ukraine looking for the earthquake in Turkey from Carolina trail from Kathmandu Nepal Truckee California covering record snowfall traveling with the president in Mexico City here at this airport in Tampa it's already shut down reporting reporting in line reporting from Jerusalem here at 10 Downing Street in London streaming live to you wherever the story is wherever the story is wherever the story is we're going to take you there you're streaming ABC News live ABC News live you're streaming ABC News live ABC news live streaming [Music] America's number one streaming news it's so much happening these days it's hard to keep up things change hour by hour minute by minute the historic weather that's now unfolding the worries on Wall Street we're bringing you the right now that a nationwide teacher shortage the right now look at the day ahead an alert this morning for dog owners and the key takeaways from the biggest story world news now and America This Morning America's number one early morning news today does feel a little different early mornings on ABC News live all right here we go you ready let's do it yes it's the show America wants and America needs right now this is what would you do let's go how favorite show this is where the newsmakers come first in the morning to be number one morning show how would your mom feel about your relationship with your brother now I can't imagine what it feels like to go from 20 billion dollars to a hundred thousand dollars yeah are you worried about going to jail you write that you had low grade depression how'd you get out of that wherever the story ABC's Good Morning America is right there outside of gunfire and bombings there's another battle playing out in parts of Ukraine with ukrainians openly rejecting Russian language and culture so I'm going as far as shredding Russian books and eliminating the Russian language from their dialogue all together it's a move seen by many in Ukraine as necessary in order to try to keep their culture alive as Putin's forces press on in their attempts to take control of the country ABC's Patrick rievel has more from Kiev in tonight's Prime Focus [Music] [Music] how do up [Applause] these hundreds of Russian books are being consigned to the dust Heap about to be cult at this paper Factory on the outskirts of keep workers are recycling the books among tens of thousands provided by ukrainians who no longer want them in their homes following Russia's Invasion the recycled paper from the books is sold and any profits donated to Ukraine's war effort there's a lot of Soviet books here I mean there's a lot of Lenin but there's also quite a lot of Soviet editions of classic Russian Riders it's Pushkin Chekov it's quite shocking to see it it's really a powerful symbol of the rejection of Russian culture foreign [Music] this key bookstore which has invited ukrainians to dispose of their unwanted Russian literature it's not enough room downstairs we put it here and then we put it there this is two to three tons of food you classic books you here ukrainians already understood that they are not the same people as Russians yes they during a really long period of time they told us that we are one people but the ukrainians already understood that it's not true the battle to Define Ukrainian identity is at the heart of the war in Ukraine Vladimir Putin Justified his invasion by insisting Ukraine was not a real state for centuries under moscow's rule Russian dominated as Ukraine's official language while Ukrainian culture and language were suppressed today most ukrainians speak both Russian and Ukrainian but Putin's Invasion has turbocharged a shift already underway millions of ukrainians are turning away from Russian language and culture and embracing a unified Ukrainian identity is a recent survey showed the percentage of ukrainians who say they now speak Ukrainian as their primary language has jumped to 58 only 15 percent of ukrainians now say they mostly use Russian it's amid a broader effort to remove signs of moscow's former domination Ukraine has taken down statues of Russian rulers and changed street names in history there's a lot of dark periods right associated with book burning and some people I think when they will see this they will say there's something similar is happening in Ukraine right now what do you think about that we do not burn books we do not just throw it away we would not destroy them away just give them Second Life a lot of these books say such things that Ukraine doesn't exist ukrainians are not a nation separate nation I mean that it was invented by Russia or something like that you can obviously imagine what Russia will say when they see these sorts of things we do not force anyone we just suggest to them if you want you can bring and they they do that and that's it foreign that Russia has occupied it has sought to erase Ukrainian culture so this was your classroom ABC's Ian panel was in this school in the Eastern Hawkeye region that the Russians occupied and then retreated from another Library this is pretty remarkable what you're seeing because this is evidence that what Russia was trying to do wasn't just to take over part of Ukrainian land but to turn it into Russia here they've filled an entire Library just with Russian language textbooks Russian history Russian literature and the Next Room the Ukrainian books that used to exist here the same practice has been documented all over areas occupied by Russia Moscow has introduced Russian curriculums in schools local Ukrainian officials say this photo shows Ukrainian books dumped on the street in occupied mariopal [Music] it's not only about killing people it's also about destroying our identity our culture and for future existence for a year Russians did not take a museum schools universities libraries they did it on purpose to erase any signs of anything Ukrainian Olga runs the mistetsky Arsenal Gallery in Kiev it evacuated most of its exhibits at the start of the war this exhibition for example it's about the impact of War on land on food and not only for Ukraine but for the global world as she shows us around the gallery here it's Aaron siren sounds this is the shelter yes have you spent a lot of time down here every time when there is a serious missile attack we all go here but we don't stop to work you refuse to be afraid if you do nothing and are paralyzed it means that you accept this fear of this bank and for us it's inacceptable do you think there's going to be a place for Russian culture in Ukraine at the end of all this I can't even think about this at the moment [Applause] [Music] because for me Russian culture is really a weapon [Music] it's a weapon which is killing people in my country [Music] our thanks to Patrick reveal and the entire team for that report still much ahead to get to on Prime coming up the all-female college where students just voted to support the admission of transgender men and committed any crime and had nothing to do with a false report the decision made one city councilman finally spoke out about what he called a horrible tragedy certainly the settlement will never bring back and it will never heal the family entirely I only hope that it can give some measure to the children and the family some kind of relief while the finch family calls this a relief they also say it's about more than the death of just one man a year after Andrew Finch's shooting his niece Adelina took her own life followed a few months later by her boyfriend a suffering East if not ended by most commercially grown fruit in the state estimating about two and a half million pounds each year it's really fitting that it you know blueberry was chosen for this now it attributes pouring in across the country Bobby Caldwell A Soulful R B singer and songwriter who had a major hit in 1978 with What You Won't Do For Love and a voice and musical style adored by generations of his fellow common little Nas X and Chance the Rapper all sampling Caldwell songs Caldwell's wife announced the news on Wednesday telling the Associated Press that he died in her arms at their home in New Jersey after a long illness he was 71. this week's loss of an hour coincides with sleep awareness weekend that is by Design we all know how hard it is to function when you don't get enough rest in fact about eight percent of adults actually take sleep meds to help get enough shut eye ABC's Becky Worley has a look at one very popular sleep aid talking about CBD Mother's Little Secret CBD isn't such a secret anymore CBD gummies Take Me Away CBD has gone mainstream even Martha Stewart and now I am launching a new line of CBD products and it raises the question for these two women who struggle with sleep can CBD help I can't sleep at night like that's when my brain starts going crazy for Jessica ater she tried melatonin tryptophan even a prescription for Ambien nothing worked and if it did work not long term she bought some Gummies at a dispensary and she says her sleep is much better and my anxiety I mean I still have it at night but it definitely helps shut my brain off so that I'm able to sleep but for Annie Guthrie a college student trying to fall asleep earlier I like to go to bed early but I have the hardest time sleeping so I needed to try something that could help that she turned to CBD chocolates and what happened nothing nothing happened it didn't work it didn't work at all and that's not surprising to those who study CBD someone who has insomnia might not benefit from it unless the insomnia is secondary to something else like anxiety or pain conditions something else that the CBD might help treat the FDA has indicated they want to create more regulation for CBD but so far they've only approved it for the treatment of some seizure disorders and the studies that exist on CBD are small we don't have the large randomized controlled trials we see a lot of promise but we still need more evidence what should people avoid or where are their dangers multiple Studies have shown that a lot of the CBD products so you buy them off the shelf and we send them off to a lab and it has half the dose of CBD that it says in there or it has twice as much or it has a lot more THC than it said it would have in there or it has THC but it said it didn't leaving those who suffer from sleep disruption to use a trial and error method to figure out if CBD can work for them all different kinds of ways to try to count sheep these days are thanks to Becky Worley for that an electro pump Duo is keeping things fresh and funky with their eclectic sound and stunning videos Sylvan Esso for more than a decade ago when two like-minded musicians first fell in love with each other's beats and then with each other now Five albums worldwide tours and a new Spotify session later the pair is better than ever our Phil Lipoff sits down with Nick and Amelia of Sylvan Esso in tonight's Prime playlist [Music] foreign [Music] ER Sylvan Esso an electric pop band touring the world playing for a hardcore dedicated fan base [Music] the Paris music as unique and cohesive as their relationship I definitely knew right away that this was a person I was going to know until I was dead oh yeah he did he said that we were going to be friends forever forever began in 2012 at the time both were in other bands Amelia had written a song called play it right foreign she asked Nick to remix it it was good I can't wait till we get to something where she says it was great because because everything she said so far that was good it's nice to manage expectations funny and self-deprecating oh look will it fix me no a trademark of their relationship and their music look no further than their names [Music] I was playing a video game at the time called um swords and sorcery and in it you can do a magical spell where you hold your little sword above your head and sing a song and then these beautiful little creatures called Sylvan Sprites come and visit you and so Sylvan was in my Orbit Amelia sent me that name and we were immediately kind of like well that's that's it it's one of those when you when you hear it there's you know there's no going back [Music] still Vanessa's music and eclectic mix of folk and electric pop hey Mommy off their self-titled release was a hit so was coffee [Music] I booked Mountain Man's first tour off of like Myspace by cold calling like art spaces in like Maine and stuff being like I have a band really let us play please I turned kind of into a circus yeah and we're like moving through the country Grassroots one fan at a time playing Major festivals all over the world like Coachella [Applause] while working on their sophomore album appropriately named what now that forever friendship turning into Love And in June of 2016 they got married for us it just felt like a really natural description of the relationship we already had the following year what now released to critical Acclaim a Grammy nomination for best dance electric album with hits like die young [Music] momentum building newly married a big tour plan and then everything just stopped in 2020.

the pandemic hit it's pretty sad to be totally impressed yeah um well because all of your interactions I think we tour so much and we have such a distinct relationship with the people who like what we do it was a very isolating experience but now when we're at shows the amount of people who come out to us and are like when you put out that record like it carried me through the pandemic was there ever a moment where you guys looked at each other and went I don't know maybe this will be it we have a studio in North Carolina that had like just gotten finished right when the pandemic hit so like we were a lot of Oasis yeah we had an oasis we were able to record that studio became a communal space shared with friends used to create Sylvan esso's lyrics as important as their Melody Amelia describes her writing process specifically using syllables to write a good hook can you think of one particular song that that is a really good example of that yeah let's see it's wheel there's a part where I say like when I'm dancing when I'm slamming in my dancing shoes [Music] wanted to write it in a really fun and sounding kind of like a strange little elf skibbling along you know um yeah yeah when I'm seven in my dancing shoes yeah like that yeah it's very movement you're kind of like yeah when the world started to open back up Sylvan Esso headed back out onto the road a huge 2022 summer tour with Odessa from that high intensity summer to our meeting at New York City's legendary Electric Lady Studio nice World Sandy built by Jimi Hendrix in 1970. so many historic sessions here from Stevie Wonder and David Bowie to more recent projects with Taylor Swift Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett [Music] on this day Sylvan Esso adding its name to that list recording exclusively for Spotify [Music] that song from the band's 2022 release of their fourth studio album no rules Sandy Sandy is what Amelia calls Nick no rules a reference to how Sylvan Esso is now unconstrained following no rules when it comes to writing and creating music [Music] proof of that the last song on the album coming back to you A big departure from what their electric pop fans have come to know you've said that you make sad songs that sound happy yeah was that intentional or was that what you were writing and that that's what you were you were bringing back to the basis of pop music edits at its core is like songs about the human experience that are um that are both uplifting but also like feel good in your ears very deliberate in their music in their life together and in the possibility of what's to come music has a magical power where it also applies to everybody else's life in the same way that it applies to your life when you're writing it there's just inherently a vulnerability there and I think as we get older the nature of that exchange changes and moves and so like when we were younger I looking back on early writing stuff it felt way more scary and now it's like scary in an exciting way our thanks to Phil for that and that is our show for this hour I'm Lindsey Davis stay tuned to ABC News live for more context and Analysis of the day's top stories thank you so much for streaming
