Kara Technologies's Presentation in Brisbane

Show Video

hello everyone hello welcome welcome here and all of you online watching welcome hello we're very excited today because we have a presentation we have two special guests from Cara Technologies and they're going to be talking um about their project and their work but I would like to begin tonight by acknowledging the First Nations people here in Brisbane on myanjin want to acknowledge and pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that who have looked after the land and the culture for hundreds of years and pay our respects to their Elders past present and emerging and so now I'm going to hand over to Eden hello hello and welcome and thank you all for attending tonight just checking everything all right it's got some late comments here for everyone's settling in so a few people just arriving to let them pack their seats Okay so so before I get started I wanted to let you know uh that for those people particularly on Zoom uh if you want to access the transcript click on the three dots above more click on there uh and there's a subtitles option in there to turn on your subtitles for the zoom Okay so just wanted to talk about Cara uh my name is Ethan I am from Australia and a few weeks ago Cara approached me and explained that they wanted to come over to Australia and yeah uh and and to display their technology they explained a little bit about who they were and we got into a discussion and I you know I was initially curious uh please explain more of my reaction and wow when I did learn more the information that I received really uh impacted me I was working for the DRC for the past year um and that was a pretty full-on job a lot of research and realizing a lot of barriers and um advocacy sort of gaps that we face within the debt Community I have ushers myself uh and particularly over the last few years with all of these events with fires and things that have been happening in Australia covert of course uh and the recent floods um you know that took some concern about how we access this information uh yeah sure there's you know we were able to receive that information but in the moment on in that small spot with the emergencies happening what happens with us in the deaf community so that was why I decided to jump on board and really uh excited to introduce you to Grace from New Zealand thank you Eden thank you hello everyone so my name is Grace and this is my sign name Grace and obviously I work for Cairo Technologies and my role is the communications manager and I have a little bit of information about this presentation this PowerPoint before I jump straight in so through this presentation I'll be jumping back and forth there'll be some PowerPoint slides and there'll be some videos and probably about halfway through I will ask you um about a feedback and I'll give you a link to a survey through a QR code which you'll be able to access it that way and as well we'll have the opportunity to ask questions and if you have any comments I just ask you if you can hold the questions and comments until the end so the people in this room um I'll ask you to come onto this map that I'm standing to ask your questions and make your comments people on Zoom if you could just type your comments into the chat and we'll have someone come up and sign your questions so everyone can see that question okay okay let's get started so again I'm the communications manager plus I'm the sign sign language expert I'm deaf myself I do have a cochlear implant so I do talk a lot I have two children as well the first one is five she's a girl and a three-year-old boy both are profoundly deaf and so that's why what drew me to work with Cairo Technologies because I was just imagining the future for my children and how they are going to be accessing information and education and um music and things like that and so that's what really drew me to Kara Technologies and who you might be thinking who this man might be his name is Arash this is his sign name Arash he is my boss he's the CEO of Cairo Technologies unfortunately he's not able to be here with us today because he was born and raised in Iran which means that his passport is has a lot of restrictions around it he can't get a visa to come to Australia and we were holding out but unfortunately he wasn't able to join us so I came by myself I did receive but good news um he will be able to join us um he had to I don't know what he's saying for government is but he was able to get the government approval and he'll be here to talk with government sorry I'm from New Zealand so I'm trying to pick up auslan as I'm going um so just please be patient with me and so he will be having meetings with um governments and deaf organizations here but he was really upset that he couldn't come tonight but he has made a video to introduce himself and I'll I'll let you guys watch that and there'll be his signs in the video so I'll be back in a moment hello everybody my name is Arash and my son name who's this Rush I'm the director of car Technologies and I'm really sad because I was not able to be involved in this presentation but who do we have Grace and Eden doing the presentation and they've been doing a lot of hard work at current Technologies but I want to say thank you to expressions and deaf connect and also deaf Australia I really hope to see you all and meet you all in person someday soon thanks guys love you all bye our rash is an amazing man he's just incredible he has so much energy that's why we've given him this sign name he's just bounding around the place with energy so a little bit of history about Arash and Kara Technologies and how it was um birth set up so I as I mentioned he's from Iran and he moved to New Zealand I don't mean here sorry he moved from Iran to New Zealand in about 2013 and he was studying his PhD in Wireless telecommunications or something I don't know it's totally over my head and probably about halfway through his studies he started to feel quite ill and dizzy and he started to lose some of his hearing and he was diagnosed with Meniere's disease which means that he is completely deaf in one ear he has Hearing in the other ear though and as he was studying he noticed in his area there was no other deaf people studying no people studying postgraduate studies like PhD in a similar field is here in in Technologies and he was wondering why deaf people don't even have their own tech companies and so he took it upon himself to go to the the deaf Education Center and so that's what the background is it's a school in West Auckland and the other people in the photos I will introduce later in the PowerPoint so that he asks lots and lots of questions about what are the barriers that deaf people experience what are the challenges and how can we help solve some of those issues and he finished telling me himself he people you know he was asking dumb questions you know like why can't you just use captions and so deaf people were saying that young deaf kids are still learning English and English might be their second language and you know maybe they're using American Sign Language and that's not um New Zealand sign language and every country has their own sign language so he learned quite a lot through that process so he was quite concerned you know around Arash is good with technology and um and he's learning sign language as well and he's taken on Deaf culture and we work together on this project and that project what we sort of envisioned is avatars who could sign and that was an incredibly long process and we've finished three different generations of avatars and I'm going to demonstrate the first second and third generation so the avatars that we're using at the moment and when you see the original Avatar you the the deaf Community was completely in disagreement with that Avatar and you will definitely be able to see why so you can see it's not really good enough it's got a very plain expression um the signing is not quite fluent and we showed it to the deaf community and we got a big thumbs down so back to the drawing board and we worked from morning till night for weeks and weeks and weeks until we finally created our second generation Avatar which I'll show you I just want to introduce this Avatar that's better right it's an improvement not quite perfect so her sign name is this and so her son her name is Nikki and that's her sign name because her personality is binary which means computer code zero one zero one zero zero zero one so that's how we got the sign name so we got reasonable approval from the deaf Community they were sort of on board had some facial expression but but just keep that in mind that her face has 124 points of facial movement that we were able to collect okay 124 so put that in the back of your mind now the current generation of Avatar oh my God it is amazing have a look for yourself the way Queen waved okay so how did we achieve that Avatar so our main goal with Cairo Technologies was motion capture which means that we have a special suit with all these points on us points of contact that capture our movement so there's a camera that captures that movement and then it renders it into an avatar if you want to just play that so this is uh this is about five years ago when we filmed this our very first one ever uh when Cairo technology is set up I had the opportunity to be involved from day one and it was incredibly exciting so this is a video a Time Lapse video of that whole day so from nine till four straight of working back and forth of doing the motion capture putting on the computer so I'm going to show you this time lapse video first foreign just recording two books so now I'm going to show you the next video that was actually what we recorded earlier this year so you will see what we actually were able to what we're actually able to do now and so the bike helmet you can see there we don't use that anymore you'll see that the motion capture suit in this next video all right so that's what it looks like today with the motion capture suit and we have 12 cameras set up to catch all of the data points on our body do you remember I was telling you about Nikki and I had 124 points on the face to capture that movement so the Avatar you just saw there so the Avatar we're using now has over 600 points so that Avatar can capture all those minute facial movements and expressions you can see the wrinkles in their face in their signing you can see that it's amazing in the next video that I'm going to show it's one of my favorite children's books ever called The Very Hungry Caterpillar I'm sure you all know the story so I'm going to show you the end of that video and that video is the full book you can actually find on YouTube and when I finish watching it it has over 80 000 views on it and that's only in the last five months so that's pretty exciting so hopefully you all go home and watch it and we can get that view count right up there so I just want to let you know that um we're not going to watch the whole thing it's probably um I'll just show you the video now that always makes me smile watching that questions so all the avatars then we have um we have a different range of avatars but who do you think actually was the person who recorded that it was actually me so the old man in the video is actually me and we've just put a different body on me as a 3D avatar so it's really odd to see myself looking as an old man Derek Carl Eric Carl is the one who actually wrote the book and unfortunately he passed away I think it was August last year while we were working on the project and so we were negotiating and asking them to have their music and to have everything put in that Avatar and so it's hard to actually recreate the author himself but But Eric carle's family really appreciated it and it's just um something to remember him by and so we did picture books we did um announcements translations but that's not what I'm here for so I'm here to chat with you about so we've been asking the deaf community in New Zealand if they've seen all these resources so you know what we can do what we're capable of and we ask them what do you want what where can we go next and one person put their hand up and said emergencies we need access in emergencies and so current the car Technologies team had a big discussion about that and brainstormed and we thought yeah let's put our energy towards that so just imagine you know Imagine This you can see it's pouring down rain and there's a reporter who's trying to report there's no subtitles no interpreter there's no information that's accessible for deaf people they can just watch and they feel quite curious and then you're seeing people that all the hearing people leaving escaping and you have deaf people going what's going on and that's not fair on the deaf community we are always behind we're the last people that people think about and so we did some research about how hearing people receive information and how the deaf Community receives information and I'll just let you know the civil defense is that's the New Zealand organization it's not relevant to Australia and so when I came you just pretend it's changed from an Australian organization but in New Zealand in an emergency you're hearing people receive a text message straight away or a phone call or they might hear on the radio they might hear it from a reporter on TV they might hear a siren you know it's all auditory information and it's all instantaneous on the spot for the deaf Community they could receive a text message but sometimes it's you know English that's not deaf friendly you know maybe they're not um don't have good English preparation and so there's always a delay in um receiving that information or and maybe they've got to rely on a friend or a neighbor to tell them but again that's delayed sometimes the reporters on TV have captions but you know they're always there's always an error they're delayed and interpreters we do get interpreters but it's normally two or three or four hours after the fact and it's too late there's a huge window of time there where we're not receiving information and so I Rush of myself we made a sort of temporary demo video before it's it's not all we have now um so I'll show you what Kara Technologies sorry a before and after of what car Technologies can do foreign Jeff the deaf person actually LED that situation and the hearing person had to follow don't you love that so you could see that video in the phone that I was watching so now I will show you how we actually make that video what technology is involved how it all works and how it gets puts together and I'll hand over to Eden all right so you can see why I'm so amazed but also now this is where it becomes really cool all right so this is just a demo so it is limited the alert uh you can pick that you can pick where and a pig's Brisbane there will be a drop down list of all these different things so let's uh uh choose a location to show so you can record uh what we have recorded rather all of the different locations so things that we've written to Brisbane so then we can select an issue uh let's say there's you know the salami it's a tsunami flood fire earthquake um I know recently this area was affected by floods so let's pick a flood please perfect and the action what is to be done as a result so really in the case of a flood there's one action that needs to be uh to be highlighted here the others that were sort of being grayed out um and so this is just a demo so we're just following the very limited um sort of drop menus here so and the experts we don't really need for now for this intensive purpose so we punch all those informations in and that an avatar is generated you see so that was made on the spot it wasn't like I had to film something and wait for any kind of technology to catch up with me it just happened automatically with the with the technology stitching together all the pieces of information so the link at the bottom there the URL it generates just like the some of you would have received an emergency warning when the floods happened an SES message uh that link will be posted at the bottom of that message and you can then watch this video if you don't understand what the message is actually saying there's an option to watch it in sign language so just to make things a little more clear we're going to give you a second uh demonstration to clarify a few things so where are we going next let's go to Cairns so as you can see pretty quick pretty automatic put the information in send it out that Community receives that message and so there is do it but anyway you can see why I was so intrigued um that picture to get involved and you can use it for so many different uh emergencies so many different levels of emergency also a little fire a big fire the name of the area the list goes on and there's so many different options but Cara have agreed that you know as you saw before the the motion capture the Stein all of the different options and then download them into a library of words let's say um so buy a service themselves would receive that library that data and it would then be uh immersed with their send out of information as they do with these emergency messages uh for any number of emergencies the in the SES or the fire department or whichever government Department it is holds that information and instantaneously they can generate that message that URL and send it out to the community immediately so anyway thank you so much for watching I'll hand it back over to greatest hits and okay thank you Eden for talking us through that demonstration and I remember we just said it's a demonstration so all those options are limited and so when we've finished sort of negotiating with the organizations and what their needs are it will be very smooth will include you know time of day and all other specific information that is actually needed and so the next step really we need your support we need you to say yes this is a great idea and we want it because that means that's how we're gonna um whatever the different sign for governments that you have but that's we need the support of the community in order to take this and Advocate to the government we need to show proof that this is what our community wants and needs so with your support we can actually achieve this so I think what we'll do is we'll I'm just going to jump ahead for two slides and then I'm going to come back to this so now remember I was saying before at the start of the presentation that I'll be asking you to do a survey a feedback survey so you can access it through your phone um through mentimeter.com there's a web address over there on the left or there's the QR code and there's about three minutes for you to do that but don't stress because um I will post all this information on our social media and Survey will be open for two weeks if you want to do it now you're really Keen you can but those two weeks it'll be open so I'm just going to give you a couple of minutes to access that survey same as the people online you can see the QR code and also the URL information there you'll be able to access it that way and maybe some of you want to go away and think about it and think about what questions or words that you want to or comments that you want to make about our work um so I'll just give you a couple of minutes to do that I just wanted to share my wonderful team with you without them Cairo Technologies would be impossible and so I've already introduced Arash he's the CEO our boss next we have Sahar this is her sign name Saha uh she's got the pink hair pink curly hair on the end of the couch there at the top she's our c-o-o chief organizing officer oh my God she is a small Pocket Rocket she is very organized she organizes everything it's deadlines to make sure we're finishing off things make sure things are on time she helps us to realize our vision and so yeah she did make sure that we can achieve our goals the next I want to introduce famiya and this is his unfortunate time name because we're following the first four letters famir farmer so that's his sign name but he's actually rakes in he's the man uh on the end of the couch there sitting on the the um armrest there and his role is the Chief technology officer he knows everything to do with technology oh my God blows my mind every time I have an issue with technology I just give it to him and he solves it like that he is an expert with programming computers coding it's like in my work at my desk I look over at his screen and I my eyes go cross-eyed I cannot understand his screen at all it's like colored with green code it's like a whole different language and he just understands it and makes a program like it's nothing it's amazing you know when you saw the demo with all the pop-downs and all the different things but to make the Avatar that's funny if that's his software it just blows my mind the fourth one is Richard and his sign name is Richard and he's the one with the cap on in the middle so his surname is Richard because he always wears a hat I've only seen him twice without a hat twice that's it once when we're in the photo for Halloween down the bottom because of his costume he had to take his hat off and the second one because we were um earlier this year we went to a high technology Awards like a very fancy event High fancy dinner and red carpet and you know we had to all dress up fancy and so you can't wear a cap at this event it's bow tie so that was really the first time that I actually saw him all dressed up and uh he looked great actually uh and then he had his hat back on the next day and the next person is animator let me just get that correct yes animator and they actually make the avatars work with the motion capture and and so I sign it and then they put it on the computer and sort of make it all fancy and make the Avatar um again it's amazing what they can do and so they've been uh with Kara Technologies from the get-go and the last person last but not least is Demi and Demi does not have a sign name because they only recently joined us four or five months ago that they did that 2022 but my goodness Demi is intelligent she's creative um she's in the middle next to Richard uh next to the animator she's a junior animator sorry and so that's our team and they are wonderful we're really like a family the way that we work we know we um band with each other and we have lunch with each other every day and every two weeks we always have like a team dinner a team lunch and it's really lovely and so I just wanted to let you know who's involved in Kara Technologies and another thing as well so with the project that we work on we always have deaf involvement always from start to finish so we have deaf people who do translations who double check the translations to make sure they're great we have um deaf people who are making the videos checking that they're okay we have deaf people in the motion capture suits we have deaf people sitting next to the animators to make sure that they are all technically correct with the Q a um sorry we have quality assurance from the deaf community so from start to finish that people are involved so obviously we have hearing people in our team I'm the only one who's actually deaf but we have a significant amount of deaf people involved and they and they co-design this whole project and a rash is always encouraging deaf people to be involved we need to polish our skills and our future our vision for the future is to have a completely deaf team deaf people who are doing the animations doing the motion capture doing the Avatar creation everything and the other thing that is really important to add is that yes this is what we do you know yes we need we have interpreters right and it's our goal to sort of get rid of interpreters and have avatars take over absolutely not never our goal we're here because we're building that gap between when the immediate announcement goes out and when we have the interpreters who are available to be there because deaf people can't afford to be waiting for The Interpreter to be organized in arrive on location you know we we definitely don't want to take over having interpreted face to face that's always something that we want to keep it's just filling that gap between the immediate um emergency announcement and making sure that deaf people have immediate access to that information in a fair and Equitable way and so I've talked enough and I will bring the session to a close but I just wanted to give you an opportunity to ask any questions or make any comments and remember if you're here in the room physically we will ask you to just come up and sign your question please if you are online if you wanted to type your question into the chat we will get someone to sign the question in front of the camera okay the floor is yours so I really want to say a big congratulations to Grace welcome to Australia back to Australia oh we beat you in the cricket sorry there's a bit of bit of competition it was awesome to watch wow I'm glad I'm still around to see this because maybe I won't be on this Earth very long but wow like well done like I'm happy that this is happening it's the first time in my life I'm speechless so wow Ah that's really high praise thank you so much and we've got another question from Petra uh we're just going to sort out make sure that we've got access Visual access for Petra oh we're going to get a relay interpreter so Petra's asked me to jump up um so I will relay her message if that's okay hi I'm Petra so wow technology has really come a long way uh and I'm uh you know I'd say it's only halfway up but it's still learning but full respect um and I have a quick question a couple of questions Maybe so I know this is uh New Zealand sign language um so I'm wondering whether they will have the different sign languages uh the indigenous the English and New Zealand sign languages so it doesn't yet uh recognize auslan because there are so many different sign languages around the world so my question is how because you guys are here negotiating with Australian organizations but with so many languages to confront my concern is that you know I'm not will they listen here uh yeah I'm just concerned that the government won't necessarily listen because there's been such a um right we've been advocating so hard for interpreter access here in Australia that um that that this might take some time to get through to them so just making sure that the the government doesn't sort of uh brush this aside and and that they can actually follow this through yes yes wonderful question thank you Petra I'm just trying to work out how to answer in sort of them in a way that makes sense so yes the technology we will be meeting with the different organizations our only focus is on that instantaneous um dissemination of emergency information we are absolutely not trying to get rid of the live interpreter because you know the interpreters can capture the Nuance of the emerging information that's going out that avatars are really just that basic emergency information so they know what to do if they need to stay or if they leave so it's impossible to replace the alive interpreter and so Petra's just saying just make sure you're reminding those organizations and Grace is just saying yes we will absolutely make sure when we are meeting with them that we remind them of the importance of live interpreters so yes we we will be prioritizing that live interpreter but it's almost like we will be saying you need both things in order to make sure they're providing Equitable access and so yes we will reinforce the need for having live interpreters and so I believe we have another question hello everyone my name is Sam I'm sure you'll know me um over 70 so unfortunately I'm not involved with the ndis but uh that's a separate issue so I have a comment um so recently I've moved to the Sunshine Coast up through the North Coast to Noosa or just south of Noosa into um uh we had a reunion a family reunion recently and I employed an interpreter but they came from such a but our location that was kind of really impossible to find the interpreters we had a speeches and certain things uh but as a deaf person I was unable to uh access that um and one of my hearing cousins came and had a translation on their phone that I was able to pick up the speech and translate that into English I said wow that's a new technology I've never seen before where did that come from I said you know it's from from the shop it's accessible to anybody so I've come back home and I've gone straight to the Telstra shop and asked for the translation device for deaf um and I put it on my file and I didn't realize that that was something so anyway uh I had some questions one one good man he educated me about uh Facebook and uh there's little bits of devices and things that need some some work and some some work on them anyway some lots of new technologies um but this is fantastic all uh this work done by deaf people you guys have done very very well I'm really happy to hear about this technology I want to say yes absolutely that is very very true uh this technology is outstanding and it's really taking over our lives but I just wanted to also say that there are some different things you know and often they favor English which is fantastic you know drinking and hearing people you know what did you say you hold your phone in front of them but sometimes it could be really funny because the the translations are never really perfect so but going back to what Pinterest said as well uh this current project um is about that instant information that's all it's just about that instant uh access to what's happening and later on we would have interpreters moving to to disseminate the real information um we can't you know we're not happy with you know hold on The Interpreter is on the way that's just not good enough it's just about that right now what's happening right now get out evacuate go up to Higher Ground whatever it is that has to happen in that moment this is really just about that immediate response to life in life or death situation potentially that's what this technology is about so I hope that clarifies a little bit for you guys um anyway there's another comment uh maybe next after that thank you and this is an extremely uh interesting information and um I just wanted to take this opportunity to give you guys a bit of a recap I've recently went to a museum over in America but for a bit of a tour over there and they all provide the multilingual uh headsets but you know I thought oh I never mind I'm deaf I don't need it but they actually gave me an iPad and I thought oh yeah whatever what's this I pressed on the link and there's a death sign language translation of the information in the museum I was amazed wow so all the museums uh and tours and all these things we're using this technology uh I'm just wondering whether they might have something like that in Australia um whether they might be able to make something like that with your technology potentially so a very short answer to your great question so chiro Technologies could really do anything it just depends on the organization and what they need and so and what the library or package of of Avatar information that we send over but that's a you know that's a long-term project for now this is sort of life-saving information that we need to get that ready to go and set up and educate people around this sort of thing first so your ideal could be something we do later and I understand you know um the survey has an option for you to put in those different types of ideas that you might have and we could take that on board as future work that we might do so we have two more questions in the room and then I think we have a question online two sorry um sorry my name is Erin so I have a few couple of questions the first one is about car Technologies and emergency and life-saving so so will we need like a special phone number to receive that information or is it just a general blast out of broadcast of communication that's that the hearing people will receive at the same time and how will we negotiate with organizations and like does that mean where's the deaf Community need to sponsor or fund or is there a co-sponsorship situation happening or if you could just answer those questions that'd be great oh I need to try and remember your questions Aaron they're great questions okay so do you need to sign up to anything no no so the goal is um so we will make all the avatars and library of information and then we will give it to the appropriate organization like the SES or whomever and we hand it over to them and it's their responsibility to sort of set up the individual videos that they need and send them out to their own people who've signed up to them and then you'll see with the demo there's all those options of places of names of types of emergencies and at the bottom there was that URL and you just copy paste the URL and um you can send that to anyone anywhere like it could be on TV it could be like it could be on the organization's website it depends what their technology what they have so we will accommodate them and match them whatever technology they have and so you could use it for anything and the third one I think I might have forgotten oh we're talking about money that's right money thanks thanks to audience members we're talking about funding so that's where um it's a difficult area the funding for Cairo Technologies um we've given them a demo and then it's about whether they want it or not and so we're in the process of generating that demonstration to attract that funding and so when the survey you'll see there's that QR code we really want you to spread the word because the more people who actually respond to that survey that gives us greater power to negotiate with governments and organizations to get that funding and and that support so um the New Zealand government you know they're sort of it looks good but we're just waiting for someone else to do it first which is sort of a disappointing response and so then Cairo Technologies has been looking for an organization who's feeling really brave but willing to give it a go and then I think it's going to take off from there once we find that organization and so that is a challenge for us another opportunity for Australia to beat New Zealand um so America seems very interested and so we were talking with different people in America so it's not just for one country really the amazing thing about motion capture is you can capture anything you can capture any sign language and so you can work within different countries but we do have a strong belief around cultural matching um accommodating the local culture um and using uh different so if it's a Maori sign using a Maori um deaf person and if it's New Zealand sign language using a New Zealand sign language user um and so if it's in auslan we would get someone like you know say Eden to come in and do the auslan translation if it's an Aboriginal entrepreneur straight Island in sign language we would get those people in to do that motion capture work as well if it's an American Sign Language we're going to get American signers if they're Japanese of course we you know it's about empowering the deaf Community within that country and respecting their language and their culture I mean I've tried ASL but oh my God it is impossible I cannot get it out so you you know you need to have um members of that local community and so I believe we have the last question in the room all right we're excited hello my name is Robin Wood thank you Trina for organizing this and contacting me I'm very excited to be here tonight I've got a lot of questions about emergencies it's not thinking about right I've actually written them all down so I'll try and keep it brief um so it was talking about Cairns and I was just uh thinking about Cyclones uh and the events of cyclone up there um and what or who to uh who is it that assesses that type of information and who just who uh distributes that information there's a lot of questions around that um but another thing that I thought was really important is when people received that text um how do or are they able to receive that text before so what did I do before like what's there so I'm in my chair you know I don't know what's happening and um you know and then I received this text message but it's after the Cyclone or after the rain or you know please don't drive through don't touch the full electrical wires you know if it's a flood um you know don't drive don't risk yourself if it's flooded forget it um so some people might see these um video messages and because we need to make sure so so that the SMS the sms's need to make sure that they're visual in their language um so if they're too English structured some deaf people will receive that information and not completely understand it so we want to make sure that the speaker needs a gas mask so many English words to keep up with the science sure that the signs that are used are quite Visual and depicting signs to make sure the meaning is clear the cast line a bit slower for The Interpreter and my next question is so if there is an emergency and you receive information like say it's a fire or a flood and it says to evacuate I guess like where do I go to like that's nice but I guess I know it's really new but um and it's a demo and everything but I see I think it's fantastic but then I think okay so now right there's an emergency okay um there's no interpreter there but I get that video and um it's I get that it's it's filling that immediate need um but it's sort of lacking that extra information about I guess where do you evacuate to and I think it's also really important that if there's an emergency and you evacuate please I pack now and evacuate so deaf don't know what to pack deaf people don't know what to pack if there's an emergency you know like and I just don't want to see deaf people you know carrying all these you know half a house as they're trying to evacuate like they don't know what to take sometimes deaf people have no idea do I have my keys my bone my charger laptop my precious photos you know if you're driving 20 minutes later though oh what do if you're driving sorry and you receive that and you know so definitely to have a lot of discussion around what might be important information to include you know as well what about animals and pets because you know it's happened people have they've been shocked you know they need to get out now they've got to quickly make phone calls what do I need what do I have to do and they're you know sending messages and video calling each other and they're the message might be able to include all of these different information as to what I need to pack uh and automatically send me those things which should give me the information that I need to be able to evacuate uh so there's plenty of things that we can add to make sure that people are kept Safe and Smart uh you know just those smarter details wow uh that was really good uh I think that one big challenge or this project in particular might be uh negotiating with different organizations let's say flyers or floods uh you know so how much or how little to add and how much time do we have to be able to do this you know it's just a simple message of get out or stay but you're right in all these different parts of the the message it's a little bit of a challenge for the hearing people as well you know are they listening to all this wait a second I'm listening to this information no the world's coming we've got to swim down no I need to hear this information now really look it's it's dependent on the situations depending on the individual and the disaster at stake um you sign beautifully there was so much but you could see that there was a there was not a perfect English translation to all of the signs that you put in in in into your uh comments so and same goes the other way we can't just expect that a long English sentence is going to come down or or vice versa and translate perfectly into a short and sharp kind of get out kind of message so we need to partner with individual organizations and and and that is why this um it's really just a like do you support support it are you interested uh we get a few key words and important messages and we talked weird say the firemen and say all right what are your important messages and we if we put all those punch all those keywords into the data set uh and you know we can say okay we're at level one uh fire or look if we're at a level five it's absolutely drop everything and run for your lives uh whereas an 11 one that has a different set of information so really this demo is quite limited uh because it's just to show you guys what is possible um so later all of those drop down menus will be extended uh at the moment right you know it might just be a get out now situation but anyway each individual organization each individual emergency as I said um can become a really broad kind of subject look we might have more to the online crowd now if there's any Quantum implements online please via Zoom let's talk okay so the question is is this presentation being accessed by the SES here in Brisbane uh well it's live streamed so yeah it'll be on YouTube as well so if anyone from the SES is watching hopefully you are yes please contact us um yeah we'd love to partner with you and talk with you um but again it's being live streamed so anyone can actually be watching um and we will be putting this recording on YouTube later as well so if anyone's missed anything or they've got friends and they want to show them um because they feel like they're missed out don't you worry car technologies will have it on their social media and on YouTube or you can contact Grace and I'm going to handball back over to Grace to wrap it up just gotta get the Tickle right okay so one last question in this because we're running over time and the food's getting cold so there's one more question and then if you have any other ideas please send me an email this is my email on the slide uh info cara.tech you can contact me anytime or on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter or LinkedIn yep everyone contact me anyway shape or form and so I'm going to hand over to the last question all right g'day all right let's make sure I'm standing in the right spot here start again my name is um for sure we'll stick to that so I've lived here for a very long time uh I am also uh Tech with um and work with data and online things and motion capture and uh it's my passion um so I've been quite interested so far in this uh technology and obviously challenges that we face for the future um so I just wanted to ask one question a little bit random I'm just talking about your motion caption for uh stories and uh these sorts of things uh would I be able to take your technology and Link in with my own projects on my computer that will definitely be a question that familiar will have to answer because I'm in the technology business but I absolutely know nothing about technology and so it could be possible so if you send me an email with all that information I will hand it over to Familia because we do want to work with other deaf businesses and other deaf organizations and motion captures of course so yes please just send an email and I will get answer for me to answer you sorry I can't answer I wish I could but I can't yeah so that's the sign our sign for email but yes okay I think we will oh sorry one more thing I'm so sorry I am so sorry one more thing I just need to thank Red Cross humanitek because they have provided the funding to actually make it possible for uh for Car Technology to do a road show Roadshow through Australia because car Technologies we are a small business we're a small setup and the funding you know we're getting little fun little bits of funding from all different places and and this humanitech and validated this project and it's actually proved to show to the government that this is needed it is incredibly important work so thank you to humanity Tech and the Australian Red Cross for making this possible and now I am finished I have finished talking and I'll bring the event to a close and hand over to Eden to wrap it all up all right so there you have it you can see why I'm so drawn to this uh I really don't feel that um this is uh is going to tie in amazingly or an amazing sort of immersion or uh marry of uh technology and Deaf culture it's more Deaf from therefore that sort of thing so I really feel connected with that and it's going to uh um sort of marry well with interpreters and the whole industry and fill the Gap perfectly I think that's extremely important um and it's a really amazing opportunity for deaf people to to the world to see the deaf community and for us to move into the future and we can make something work uh for the future with something like this so I really hope that you've all taken something away from this and that you've uh taken some time to fill out that survey uh and that you can have some time to discuss amongst yourself and your friends and share these links with your friends and family um please if there's any um anything more than you need get in touch with us any organizations that we've missed and we are really interested uh the sky is the limit let's say so I just want to say again thank you so much for your time enjoy the food over there and love you all thanks for coming
