thank you so much for the warm welcome and it's my pleasure to be here and uh share this session and uh share my few cents on this team at tech the technology usage in the academic workspace i thought of recently we are seeing a lot of changes happening in the way education and the in the education industry so i will try to touch upon very briefly in 15-20 minutes how i see things are shaping up and how things have evolved in the past few recent months so as i see uh i really like this quote my screen uh as visible to all of you i guess yes i was i think this quote sums my presentation today where uh this says that the future will be about pairing the artificial intelligence of computers with the cognitive social and emotional capabilities of humans so that we educate first class humans not second class reports so this is but to make my point why i specifically put this code in place i will first touch up on i went through the conference stream actually before uh signing in for this class session so i saw that we have you are covering things like academic erp and tech space in the emerging landscapes and everything so i thought i'll briefly touch on how i see things are shaping up here so now we are seeing how i would like to put it is that we are seeing lot of technological optimism all of a sudden everywhere and more so in the teaching profession so there were researches conducted by tata migra hill and it came out that even students when it comes to preferring which kind of classes they like they are preferring classes that used digital technology alongside textbook lessons this was the perspective from the student side looking at the perspective from the educators us as teachers even they prefer and they foresee that the future education system will be more about self-paced and personalized learning where students will plan how they want to learn when they want to learn which courses they want to take so it will be quite a great extent it will be a self-paced and personalized learning second it will be more of a student-centric approach guided by ai chatbots video based learning and all these aspects another is that computer simulations such as virtual reality augmented reality all those things will make abstract experiences accessible to the students in the classroom making it more attractive and user friendly now flipping classrooms this is also very much gaining momentum in the recent years now where we will see the house the shift will happen in the way the students absorb the learning so in with respect to this i have thought of putting a slide on flipping classroom what is basically flipping classrooms here the focus gets flipped in such a way that in traditional teachings the teachers are reviewing the homework and presenting new content and then out of the class students do the homework and then they learn but in the flipped focus in flipping classrooms what is happening is now students are learning new content through video and technology and then they are discussing in the class they are just discussing their application side of it so if you see in the flipping classrooms it's just changing the way the students are absorbing the learning in the traditional classroom it is more of 35 percent it is more student centered and in the flip focus 80 percent it becomes student centric so that's how that some of the changes we are observing now also the great usage of chatbots it all started with the this professor from georgia university when he designed this uh robot called jill watson and when they used to launch this course on artificial intelligence and different uh subjects they used to receive for one given subject more than 10 000 queries and the the professors in good universities they get teaching assess assistance also but still it would be a lot of work for them so this particular professor decided to have a robot in place gel and this he not only sped up all the work that was done but students didn't even realize they were in interacting with the robot so the efficiency and effectiveness was enhanced multi-folds now what i'm trying to say is with chatbots the interaction between the student and computer has been self-limited now learners can get feedback immediately teachers don't have to grade all the papers the chatbots can they are successfully grading papers with high accuracy more so if it is a multiple choice and all those things so it is saving a lot of time of teachers and even students say they are they with advanced algorithms that can send you know feedback to the students okay you should revisit this particular course otherwise you will forget so that it keeps the students on the track of their learning now touching this was how the we are seeing the technological optimism and why how the educators are seeing it how the students are seeing it that was one side of it now coming on to academic erp we are seeing that in the market there are too many academic erps erp's put on offer now what is academic erp is nothing but a simple enterprise solution where the colleges and universities can look forward to incorporate it so as to automate their academic and administrative processes now there are so many in the market available and one can choose it based on you know the size of the institution the number of courses you have to offer the number of faculty members so there are various aspects one has to look into when selecting an academic erp system the point is why go for an academic erp system and why at all what are the benefits that come with it some of the benefits that i could put forth and points here was number one it simplifies the process specifically manual processes like admission process you are sitting at your home you can get your student admitted get everything done from facebook payment to online selection interview everything the entire process admission process fee payments data management everything can be fully automated then it this results in cost effectiveness quick management process so these are some of the benefits or advantages of implementing erp in schools and in colleges educational institutions some other benefits are like it saves natural resources because it reduces lot of paperwork another is that you can access it anywhere 24 7 anytime also the transparency with the parents increases i for example have to check my daughter records i just log in as a parent my daughter logs in as a student and faculties log in as a faculty and they have all the information which is critical for them to take their decisions so the transparency is enhanced now all this leads to reduction in the cost of communication you know previously you had to write mails and send to individual parents now the software you put a message will send thousands of bulk messages with timely reminders but just at the click of a button so overall it all can make erp leads to enhancement of productivity we can say now of all the different uh academic erp systems in place i just put for example one like three class 365 which is there the class two this is a australian-based erp being used by multiple institutions some of them i know also see we see that it is offering number of features like free admission features like paperless admission which i just talked about online application forms then lead management lead nurturing course management like students can see which courses they have audited which courses they've credited uh if they want to enroll for another course what all they have which will enhance their you know prospective candidature so everything can be managed online student information system features then these are the finance and accounting features like online payment options then analytics with respect to a student and behavioral analytics also we will talk about it when i will talk about ai in the education sector then blended learning and flipped classrooms and online quizzes and tests which i just touched upon so for example this is a class 365 which i put forward for you it has you can see many features and most of the erp systems that we have are now offering variety of modules and you can choose upon depending on the requirement of the institution now when it comes to erp system we talked about why and what are the benefits of going for it but the this uh slide i put in to share that when research was conducted from the perspective of students at the end user research as well as the educators who were using it they found that there are two ways to assess an erp system in terms of its effectiveness first is the functional requirement this is with respect to what an higher education erp system must do and we found that most of the ant end tech users and the educators they feel that it must provide these things like institutional profiling staff profiling student profile payroll admission event management fees accounting semesters calendar you know alumni management all these these some of the things the erp system must provide these are the functional requirements now looking at it from the non-functional requirement what is the non-functional requirement this refers to the performance characteristic of the system that number one it should be accessible uh easily it should be compliant in compliance with the laws it should have some degree of fault tolerance just that it doesn't disappear when or when you are entering something it does goes off or it hangs so it should be scalable robust resilient and there's testable the privacy aspect of the user should be maintained fault tolerance should be there so these are some of the non-functional requirements on the basis of which we say okay the ah which enhances the uh func you can say the performance characteristic of the erp system now moving on to we have talked about the how the technological optimism part side of it and we also talked about the erp systems and the flipped classrooms till now but these days many times we hear comments like oh these days an online class everybody is getting promoted so what do we mean by that we are but when we make such statements many times what happens is the student hits herself or himself first of all it creates a doubt in the mind of the student that whether i just got promoted because it was an online way and or so how do we assess that um whether the course the taken by the student any given student in school or higher education it was effective it is just like the uh on in class experience one of the ways of doing it is assessment so another very critical dimension of when we say a tech world is to look at the proctoring systems we have in place if the proctoring systems are not well built then the entire education that this child or the student has received will become questionable so that as of now we see that there are three types of online proctoring systems in place one is the live proctoring where the human proctor is uh involved and he keeps track of the eye movements recognize the face of the students and all those aspects then another is the recorded proctoring and the recorded proctoring is where the candidate is performance while giving the exam gets recorded so human intervention is there and but it gets recorded it can be accessed later and then one is the fully automated proctoring system without the human element involved so but we have seen uh that most of the as of now the proctoring systems that we have in place they are relying on in these left side you just have some of the researchers that have done a research on the existing proctoring systems and their effectiveness because if the proctoring system is not effective then again i make that point the questionability of the degree comes into place so as of now the uh when it comes to artificial intelligence proctoring systems most of them are realized relying on things like camera mic involvement of a human proctor maybe a screen sharing recording application lock biometrics case tracking and all and random question banks where you just have the questions in such a way that the students cannot you know cheat so these are some of the uh methods which are currently being employed these are some of the online testing softwares and platforms i just thought of putting together which are widely being used these are the live online proctoring systems and these are the fully automated ones so you can have a look at them now when it comes to having a fair artificial intelligence based proctoring system what all other technologies which are currently being used first is number one they are using verification of testicles via biometrics facial recognition voice recognition key stroke analysis fingerprint analysis all those things are self authentication schemes now there are web webcams screen sharing smart camera you know position in a way that you can view everything around the test taker and all those things are there even the exam session gets recorded and stored in an lms server which is indicated integrated with the cloud-based software and the proctor can review it later if there are any doubts there so these are things which are currently being used once we have replaced the face-to-face pen and paper based examinations but they have helped us to a great extent but they have also brought in a set of challenges what are these challenges challenges are number one that privacy issue highly sensitive biometric data of the students are getting collected on the pretext of verification purpose now there is an element of uncertain risk of academic unfairness because we are relying on ai informed judgment then proctor authenticity as you remember in the previous slide i talked about there are three major types so one of them was where the human factor was involved in the online proctoring system where it is not fully automated so the authenticity proctor authenticity is also an important question there then another is the cost of such software that sometimes uh towards the higher sides which the some institutions may not be able to afford and if just another very common problem that we see is that if the student is giving the exam in a location where the net connection is weak or electricity gets cut or something then the student has a risk of being flagged as you know trying to cheat or something which may not be the case so these are some of the challenges that come into picture when we talk of the uh proctoring side of uh or the examination testing side of it so when we see the future how it will be we have to justify the ethical usage of these technologies in such a way that we are able to strike a balance with between the benefits we are able to read from it and also uh which is kind of very convenient to the teachers and can more reliable from the perspective of you know assessment of students now now this all from my side with respect to what i wanted to touch upon lastly uh i wanted to just move into this part of the artificial intelligence side of uh recently when i was doing my own research in terms of edtech in the workspace so i had written one article now for human capital magazine where i wrote on artificial intelligence in the learning domains so this particular article was focused on like the millennials and generations that they're all time absorbed in their electronic devices so will the human teacher role become engineers or more critical or will robots take over the place of teachers as well so that your curiosity led me to pen this article and what i found while writing this article was that there are a lot of changes happening in the tech space and number one is like we see now robots being used in almost all sectors like health care or pharmaceuticals or education hospital every sector even you we all must have heard of this viomitra the one who went was trained to go on space we have sophia the world's first robot citizen who is also the undp ambassador so with all these changes happening so the question was whether okay we have automated the learning experiences we have automated the testing side of it now will the teach robots take place over the place of teachers as well so to look at it we uh what my research found that that it's very difficult for the robots to take place of a teacher completely because when we as of now the artificial intelligence we have in place can be grouped into certain categories like reactive machines which machines with limited memory and theory of mind and machines with consciousness and currently as of now in this workspace we see that we are still struggling to create machines with a theory of mind which is akin to humans now theory of mind here refers to if you see that theory of mind in humans develop around the age of four so like you know in before the age of four we are all basically listening we are more like actors we are listening to our parents we are paying attention then imitating and then replicating the behavior but after the age of four as the theory of mind develops we get this ability to understand that when somebody is saying something what is the explicit meaning what is the implicit meaning of the same statement so this particular creating this kind of theory of mind in robots which is totally akin to humans is still undergoing and that's the fine bridge between robots and humans another aspect of it is machines with consciousness now machines that are not only able to arouse emotions and others but evoke emotion in themselves also so we are yet to reach there so considering the role of a teacher the kind of role the teacher takes up you know interacting with the student at the classroom level and sometimes at the personal level to mentor them to hold their hand to take them forward to change their and teaching style as for the you know requirements of individual student needs all those aspects tell us that yes chatbots ai and all these things can reduce workload on the teachers it can really greatly complement the teaching experience to a great extent but may not be able to replace them for example we have these schools in china we are seeing where they by the moment this student enters the class they are given headbands to put on their head now these headbands have three electrodes one on the forehead and one on the left and the right the the moment the student puts on the headband the it sends the signal to the teacher's computer with respect to the student's attention level and all those aspects now the student can monitor that but now there are side effects too there's certain repercussions to this for example the student will feel that he or she is being continuously monitored again all the biometrics ensured that privacy issues are there cyber security issues are there so plus the human interaction between the student and teacher the way it is cannot be replicated so effectively now so in some again i will go back to my first slide after visiting the kind of for you know touching upon the erp system the online proctoring systems and i would just close my uh discussion here with reiterating that point that yes technology has greatly and very positively facilitated our academic works place and that's one of the reasons i am also here connected and i can get in touch with you all and share my thoughts and learn from you all but the future when it comes to the education industry will be about pairing the ai in such a way that we are we don't lose out on the cognitive social and emotional capabilities of humans and it will be a blend of fight in such a way that we are able to make maximum out of it that's all from my side thank you so much thank you doctor that wasn't uh i mean it was just enlightening it was so true everything around us everywhere and it's been slowly creeping up on us technology in the education sector but yes i totally totally agree second your thoughts that yes it is the future of education it is here to stay and uh we need i definitely need more research about how to go about it what are the what is the swot analysis of the whole prospect of technology in education thank you ma'am for your delightful inputs we surely uh you've opened up new avenues for research we'll surely be taking up some thank you ma'am moving forward moving forward we will be going uh into our
