Apple iPhone 13 event: LIVE Recap

reviews editor sherlin lowe and we've got matt smith are you gay bureau chief over here with me matt how's it going hi i'm good it's about what is it what time is it now it's about half seven here so i'm already really tired i've just put all the lighting on so it looks like it's somewhere closer today yeah looks bright it's just trying to keep myself awake without caffeine um but yeah we've got lots to talk about after that big apple showcase uh what you want to start with what do you want to get started with sure well i i want to first quickly shout out the people in our chat already uh we're doing our best by the way yeah we're doing our best by the way to stay on top of the uh uh bots or the spam so please bear with us um but i want to say hi to michael brescher abigail moroney um jevin sims james preston danny danny trey johnson uh abram vasquez lots of you are here um give us your questions give us your thoughts so that we can address them while we're here live talking to you but matt like you said there was a whole bunch of stuff that got announced uh let's go we can do a quick recap in chronological order before we kind of like i think dive into what what stood out yeah let's hit the notes and then go for the major things that sounds like a good plan yeah so the very first thing i think we all saw was just some shout out to tv plus shows coming in the fall i don't think any of those was surprising to anyone uh finch is the new tom hanks thing featuring tom hanks robots and dogs which just sounds like an algorithm decided tv show um but yeah that could be another lots of national treasures in there yeah right yeah at least one yes and then the second thing is um uh that announces ipad we dove right in with ipad first with the ipad i don't know if they're calling it the ipad 9 but it's basically the entry-level ipad yeah as well as the ipad mini 6 which cute as hell we will get into that and then apple watch series 7 which looks very similar to the series six and we did not get a major change right yeah i i heard rumors that it would be a lot more uh like ipad pro e iphoney with like sharper edges but no still soft more screen less border which is kind of predictable this is why you cannot always trust leaks you cannot always ddd and you're facing those yeah all the apple watch things was kind of connected to fitness plus kind of obviously so with fitness plus we've got even more expansion uh new workout programs a little a few more bits and pieces that we can touch on but then we're on to the the goods the real good oh yeah we got the iphone 13 series uh iphone 13 mini regular which is a no-name pro and pro max uh and you know i don't know if it surprised anyone that it's not a 12 s right because this is technically sort of like an s year um and also they didn't shy away from the 13 naming like a lot of companies tend to yeah that was interesting i kind of like that like who cares right that's yeah in fact why not why not just so so let's i think dig into these oh by the way also no airpods three i saw that some of our yeah when the live chat were very upset where is the airpods three yeah i know i i was expecting it's been two and a half years since the second gen airpods which means we're due some upgrades now which by the way i think means that either we're gonna get a press release drop sometime soon or apple has another event coming soon that we might have yeah i mean entry a new entry-level airpods would make sense to have before the holiday holiday season right so yes am i hugely surprised they didn't appear no um but yeah let's can we start with the iphones because that's the most definitely um so which one stood out from the new family of four for you i covered the iphone pro and pro max news so i think they start and i think they also stood out because again like our chat uh is noticing there's the addition of this promotion adaptive refresh rate technology on the pro series which means the screens can finally a first an iphone refresh at up to 120 hertz in the android side of things we've seen these on phones from samsung and oppo for a while now i believe and oneplus has also had high refresh rates not necessarily 120 hertz but pretty up there and asus right so so for apple to finally bring this tech to the iphones even though if it's only just for the iphone pro line um it's definitely you know nice to see right i i recently switched by the way from my pixel pixel 5 i almost said six i do not have the pixel six i'm interested so five which doesn't refresh like that quickly um but i i switched over from i like a galaxy phone too which does refresh super quickly like at 120 hertz adaptive and then back to an iphone 12 recently and it does feel a little like jagged and stuttery when you go back down to 60hz interesting i find the same thing so like you don't notice it until you experience 120 hertz and then as soon as you step back down to a 60 hertz screen or even a 90 hertz screen that's when you feel it and it's oddly it's oddly in the kind of periphery where you know 120 hertz of a screen it's when you scroll it's when you drag things that's when you kind of feel that fluidity it's oddly less about mobile gaming or videos really and it's more about kind of you know exploring your phone life yeah your phone life really less about the features which i find kind of intriguing uh but yeah it's definitely when you're talking about the most expensive iphone yeah they should have screens on par with the best android phones so this is kind of absolutely now the the screens obviously aren't the only thing that's new about the iphone 13 pro series um screens by the way same size on the thirteenth before yeah all four yeah yeah we got six point one and six point seven inch michael brescher in the chat asks shirlene do you think it was a missed opportunity do not have an always on display and yes that was a very widely circulated rumor and always on display for the iphone 13. i i they didn't mention it at all right during the the keynote i wouldn't be surprised if it's something that they could do with a software update in future so i wouldn't write this one off just yet uh definitely doesn't seem like it at the moment though i would say um is it a miss opportunity i don't think so i don't know i i'm used to it on my android uh but i don't miss it when i switch over to iphone because the lift to wake is quite responsive so i never feel like i'm waiting for too long to see the time um and also one last thing on that display ltpo which uh is the energy efficient screen technology uh something yeah yeah low temperature poly crystalline oxide all right so not to drop some knowledge but yes uh ltpo it's yeah more energy efficient so apple didn't call this out on the keynote but i'm sure if we dig into the press materials which we will in a moment um we'll see that that is exactly what the display technology is um but yeah it's supposed to bring about good battery life and speaking of the iphone 13 pro max supposed to last 2.5 hours longer than the iphone 12. pro max making it the longest lasting iphone around matt have you used the pro max the 12 pro max yeah so pro max was my phone of choice when the 12 family came out so that was my main one the gig basic beastly phone and yeah the battery is great the only problem was i wasn't going anywhere i wasn't taking any photos i wasn't recording any video you know yes it was a kind of a much more sheltered life as you all probably experienced yeah yourself so it wasn't really the best time to push a phone to its limits now that you know the country in the world is opening up now is the time for you know to perhaps test out the 13 pro max's cameras and that battery life and that giant screen and i and the adaptive uh display refresh that could yeah that could also help that battery although they kind of pointed out and we'll get to this with the smaller 13s that there are bigger batteries in these phones yes thankfully another popular question in our chat jonathan ledesma and a lot more people asked or like she used you uh okay uh when will we get ios 15 for other devices we have the date it's september 20th you can check out the details on engadget.com but yes it will be available to download september 20th which is just under a week from today um but back to the iphone 13 pro really quick before we move to the other products there are some camera improvements as well uh i know some of you are asking for the camera specs the main sensor on the iphone 13 pro and pro max is now a uh has now got an aperture of f15 1.5 and a 1.9 micron pixel size on the sensors which should lend a lot more light than before um the ultra wide uh camera on there has i can't remember i think an f 1.8 aperture i need to go

look at my post again for the details okay f1.8 nice good at numbers i am and which means according to apple it should let in or improve low-light photography by about 92 percent i mean i think that's very sure how they measure that nonsense but yeah right it would be a lot better apple said it's also like their biggest iphone sensor yet which again makes sense that f 1.5 aperture we're talking about that's like really expensive camera glass to get down to that aperture that's gonna that should be incredible um i also liked uh that the pro cameras will go up to six times optical zoom from what i can tell so far there's no difference between the pro and the pro max last year i think the pro max got about a 0.5 extra bit of optical zoom so it's good to see both kind of going toe to toe there um they really made a whole big deal about these cameras didn't they share like the cinematic mode which we will probably talk about a bit later but yeah it was a lengthy presentation about and giving these cameras to oscar-winning directors like us from bigelow and seeing what they can do with it and come on like these guys aren't going to use these phones to record their next film what what is the kind of point what is apple aiming at when they say you know look at these directors using these phones what's the use case here for these phones and the kind of high level cinematic features they'll be getting with this series i agree with you but i think that there is an audience for these phones i mean last year we i asked the same question with the 12 pro max and i had um i mean i don't know if it's right to call them an influencer but like um this instagram account reached out to me and said that they were very intrigued by it because i could see exactly like a person who job it is to make videos for instagram or or youtube uh might find it could come in handy uh uh yeah i could see that small screen yeah video because i i guess the thing the easy refrain is yeah okay yeah you can say it's good for influencers or young people that are into filmography but they're always jumping into cameras as soon as they can jump into cameras right they're not sticking with their iphone they're evolving but you're totally right where it's like part of the job like better cameras will offer better creative freedom i mean we you know we've done this job for a few years like oh okay you know we don't even do much camera stuff but our camera skills just by doing these jobs has improved with the technology as it's improved and as we've upgraded our hardware and our kit right i've got a a great like light over here that's making me look quite sweaty but i can adjust the temperature i can adjust the brightness on my smartphone i've got my camera will auto defocus my background which is great like there's so many technical things to video i just wonder who it's for and that's not to say i'm not going to use cinematic mode so i think it looks really cool and macro photography and macro video as well these are these are again new features for iphone that we've seen in android phones which i know is your favorite thing to talk about on these apple livestreams my i love talking about android uh and a lot of people in our chat are too but um um to round out the camera trio on the pro max we've also got a 77 millimeter telephoto lens um that does i think on its own three times uh optical zoom the six times is the com combination of some uh uh isp trickery as well um i will say this uh another question that keeps getting asked in our chat is something i think you can answer really well for us matt what colors what colors are the iphone 13 pro going to be available in oh you're testing well i believe it's black silver gold and a new blue color if i am not oh i'm thinking yeah you got us on the baby yeah you've got us on the regular 13. i got you on the on the four colors gold silver sierra blue starting yeah 28 gigs all the way up to an all new one terabyte storage option which was teased and yeah that rumor was true the wanted by option cinematic mode exactly it would be good for that and also prores support so if you're editing in full resolution on your phones for the first time you'll be able to do that on iphone uh thanks to pro res so uh to answer some of you on the chat someone called bella in emma's world said is this the actual apple event no i'm sorry you you want to rewind a little bit yeah go in uh we got a few more we've got a few more questions from uh some other people like whether cinematic mode will be available on the iphone 12 pro or on ios 15 or is it limited by camera hardware it does sound like it's an a15 bionic thing uh so it's definitely coming to the the the cheaper iphone 13 phones i know i remember that from the stream so yeah it will be coming yeah 13 or a 13 minute you'll get that cinematic mode with those kind of uh quick lock focus features and all those cool bits and pieces yes indeed uh i'm also by the way quite grateful to those of you who are answering some of the questions in the chat for us we can't get to all of them ourselves because you guys are enthusiastically firing away your questions which we appreciate um we'll just we just gotta we just gotta uh understand that we can get to all of it but anyway another question that keeps coming up is for those of you who have been paying attention to the rumors uh you are rightly pointing out that there were no notes or mention of satellite communications which is something that also floated around a little bit before today's launch matt did you hear about this rumor yeah yeah so this has been teased for a few weeks but then it was followed up by like a counter rumor that it wasn't going to be ready in time then i i kind of turned my head i was getting like rumor whiplash because apple were tweeting of the day of like tim cook tweeted like these beautiful pictures of california desert and i'm like yeah is is tim gonna stream it from the desert like yeah like calls or to i don't know apple executive somewhere else in the world i don't but yeah nothing happened nothing came of it wasn't even mentioned at all yeah speaking of the stars too there's no astrophotography mode mentioned during the keynote which is another yeah another uh you know hot rumor that was floating around and anyway another lesson for you all just the leaks they're not always accurate i'm going to try to do a running tally of all the leaks that um were accurate or not this time around and see what we can you know go on i mean engadget in a fair few text sites they're always careful in how they write up rumors because they are exactly that rumors even if they're from people who have a great history of them at that point until they confirm they're not happening unless you know we hear from our own sources or it's kind of cooperating across people you know you don't know until you know indeed um another popular feature also is part of i believe the iphone 13 line so we're going to use this to segue into the regular iphone 13 line smaller notch uh on the iphone 13s i know that it's definitely like about 2.2

times smaller on the pros matt what do you think does the notch look smaller based off of the photos because to me it looks the same it looks about the same to me it looks about the same oh my gosh so this revolution yeah when the first photo came out of the 13 i didn't really see the difference and nor come i can't really tell what can apple do with that little bit more space there isn't really you could put what another icon in another maybe you could put that satellite call reception a reception icon in there or something but yeah there's not much you can do with a little bit more incremental space but if they're shrinking it that means that's the trend right so it's going to shrink its drink and shrink uh so that's a good thing um no under display cameras yet it's going to be a few years because yes no spoilers but they're all pretty rubbish at the moment so apple dodged a bullet by weighing that out for sure um but yeah that doesn't it still looks like an iphone notch to me yeah it's interesting i i i really don't know what i mean uh aaron schultz in the chat says the notch is still huge lmao yeah me i'm lmaoing with you friend um so it does not look much smaller at all to me i will say uh this oh oliver david fernandez mentions you think that they did mention a astrophotography mode uh this might have gotten mentioned and i just couldn't hear it because i was so heads down writing things up uh that it might have just like whisked right by and i didn't catch it but we'll pay attention to that and like let y'all know later on um iphone 13 what stands out to you matt uh the smaller ones fans out for me it's business as usual and i also think like the iphone 12 last year was a quite a solid performer the battery life was good the price was good still got a big screen um yeah it was a pretty solid phone at a pretty reasonable price the 13 looks like more of the same by that measure though there's not much that will convince an iphone 12 user to upgrade to an iphone 13. yeah i i was going to say the pink looks so pretty i do know you won't do it you know me you know me very well um it's the same pink i want to say very similar pink to pixel 3's uh not pink we will launch that very very very light pastel pink almost peachy but i will have to see it in person um i need to acknowledge that our executive editor aaron supports is in my dms saying you and matt are blind this the notch is so much smaller and also ob dean in our chat says that they noticed that seems boxier and less curvy than previous i could i could see that bit more but remember aaron i sent aaron a picture of my new desk and he complained that my plant wasn't precisely center aligned so he's not a normal human being and his opinions mean nothing his eyes are both in rulers have yeah rulers facts um but yeah it's a little bit small but seriously you're going to show that the new iphone to someone they're going to be like wow that notch really has been reduced a few millimeters having said that like i'm talking about the iphone 13 and 13 mini maybe on the bigger screen pro pro max yeah it might look a bit smaller i mean i guess i'm looking at the um the picture the render now and i'm looking at my yes it is a little narrower for sure compared to this is the iphone 13 uh regular and comparing that to the picture i've been seeing is definitely like on the sides it's a little thinner for sure right we see it's narrow yep good job video our video team is killing it right now look here you go here you go let's let's let's do that for y'all again yeah here we go here we go i hope you all can see it i hope y'all can see it see okay we're done we're done with this bit um colors seem to be for me the top selling point of the new iphone 13 unfortunately i mean they have the similar improved ultra white camera uh hardware screens are brighter the batteries are bigger those are those were the headline features actually i think yeah that was the headline we wrote on the site um still you know they're all good they're always good improvements the prices are relatively similar um of note possibly more on the mini is the promise of one and a half hours more battery life because germany's major foible was its battery wasn't great and two and a half more hours on the on the on the 13 compared to the 12. um and those those are really good that's a really good improvement um i would say the mini definitely needed yeah the mini definitely needed that boost in battery life uh and and the 13 was fine um you know not the best but but serviceable um i want to acknowledge that mark dell one of our regular viewers said that the video team is always amazing this is entirely true also while we're at it shouting out to some of our regulars jonathan um i mean i think that's it for the iphone 13s right like not much to talk about on on them because they seem like they're just for an upgrade i'm hustling through the spreadsheets but that's about it it's a very it's a kind of an s update for these um i'd say there were bigger leaps made with the phones on the pro models than what we're seeing yes these 12 phones and it's almost always the prices business as usual oh and uh another crucial kind of upgrade because uh the entry-level minion i think even the entry level 12 like they've upgraded the initial storage up to 128 gigs last year it was 64 gigs cheese it really was and you know you can have all the icloud in the world but 64 gigs is not gonna be enough uh for anyone using their phone normally so that's also a good sign uh what's next next then how what's the come down after all those phones yeah i and i'll just say that uh the sniper rex said that they might skip the 13 this year and i'll say that yeah it sounds like that's the main takeaway so it's not that much other than the mini does seem to feature like better camera technology like they took the 12 pro max's cameras and they squeezed it onto the 13 mini which is nice okay yeah the improved sensors again it's a bit predictable but it's totally worth mentioning yeah better sensors better performing cameras all right so those of the people who are asking about os updates i just want to remind let you know ios 15 and watch os 8 will be released september 20th uh i am not entirely sure on the mac os monterey update just yet um next on the launch list for today's event would be i think apple watch series 7 as well as fitness plus and i am pretty stoked about the fitness plus group workout feature uh before i go into that though someone's already asked a lot of times what colors are the watch os or the watch series seven available to watch the watch series seven colors are absolutely insane that's why there's so many options so matt one of the worst honors yeah yeah deep breath okay so on the normal aluminium watch you'll get it in midnight starlight which is like almost like a champagne color green blue and there'll be a product red model then it is there's then a silver graphite and a gold a silver comma graphite comma gold stainless steel model and then in the titanium range there'll be a natural space and a black finish so depending on your price okay that will kind of decide which other i'm i'm rocking a blue series six at the moment which i quite like the only problem with those kind of colored watch faces is you you're kind of limited with your strap options or at least it looks like it always matches don't always match yeah you know i like to match um but yeah those are the colors any other questions i can answer while i have the spec sheet or should we just go from the top about all the um yeah let's do i mean i i personally have the rose gold watch se by the way and yeah you're right it's not the easiest to match so i think for me the most interesting of the watch seven updates i know everyone else was hyped about durability and whatever i was just like faster charging holy crap yeah yeah yeah okay so 18 hour battery life yeah yeah you can also totally tell who doesn't own an apple watch like only 18 hours i know it's like yeah you just you wear it you charge it and you get like if you want to sleep tracking you wear it while you sleep i know for anyone that's never ever seen cher on the live stream talking about the apple watch ever before cher doesn't wear wearables while she sleeps because she's a vampire and they don't fit in the coffin or something like that there's some reason why she doesn't yeah the the wood really interferes with the uh the signal whatever but speaking of sleep tracking by the way according to apple the new charging will enable you to get eight hours of overnight sleep tracking with just eight minutes of charging apparently i don't know uh how effective that is going to be just yet i might i might have to probably have to test this out um i will say that the battery life claim is not an improvement from before it's just the same as before which is they even said it's the same yeah it's a day but thirty percent faster charging than the series six which will mean you get zero to eighty percent in 45 minutes for me that's a good thing because i'm always like shoot i need to go to the gym right now and i forgot to charge this thing and it's at like zero percent so hopefully we'll see a big difference with this um yeah there's more right a new fast charging usb c puck um so i mean you need that puck and the new watch to get those dizzying charging speeds yeah okay we need all that power why because the new device the new watch series 7 has bigger screens uh slightly bigger i think they've reduced the bezels uh so you you'll notice thing i think the design will look nicer just thinner thinner bezels which is always nicer with minimal actual dimensional changes according to apple the screen itself is 20 more screen than the series six it's a 1.7 millimeter screen with a 40 thinner

border than on the series 6. um and then they've redesigned the interface to squeeze in like nearly 50 percent more text on screen so when you're reading a message on the watch you should see just like a lot more lines of text then because they have so much more space apple added a full qwerty keyboard on the watch when you're replying your messages and as anyone who's ever used a smartwatch will probably tell you that's kind of insane but you can use like the swipe typing style which apple calls it i mean yeah i mean it's an option isn't it but it's nice to have that option it's gonna be doing this also yeah well it's also probably faster than what they have now which is like handwriting right like you write individual letters if under duress yeah i'll use siri and then whoever gets the message just needs to translate it or whatever words seriously that's why you keep sending me vomit emojis yeah that's what that is yeah i like i like that i like the bigger screen though it's like um it's like when the iphone finally moved to the iphone 10 and we were getting rid of the home button and you know the screen is kind of expanding out with the bezels are getting less there's just more screen to play with and i think when it's this tinier device more screen is always better yeah yeah and yeah they seem to be doing it in a very subtle way again against rumor no flat edges there was a rumor that the new apple watch would have kind of harder edges a bit more like the ipad pro or the iphone's right at the moment but no it's yeah it's even softer to be honest like the coolest even curvier they had softer corners and yeah curvier looks and i love the look of that uh contour face where the kind of the numbers around the edge were kind of bubbling up i just find that quite aesthetically appealing i'm sure executive editor aaron will have dismissive words to say as soon as he catches up on the stream um i i want to acknowledge a few things going on in the chat right now one jonathan anderson said sherlin testing sleeping products with 12 different watches is hilarious there is no way i will wear 12 watches to bed but please do not ever request this because it will be very upsetting um and then uh adrian sm has a note about the ipad mini which we will get to in a little bit and uh michael brusher pointed out that you have a series three and the screen is so small i think it's worth mentioning that apple is still keeping the series three yes and then why well that design is so outdated so small it's kind of like terrible as well and the features aren't there and just like they must must have lots of them right they must have lots of i've you know watched three screens hanging around that they need to sell i mean it's a great it's a great way to because i don't think it's a good price also i don't think you can hand me down apple watches like you can hand me down iphones you know how we can hand it to your elderly devices to our moms and dads and that kind of thing right or kids or watches that yeah but a watch is a little bit like a little bit grosser i don't know like it seems like it's really personal if you buy a new strap maybe if you get them like a brand new strap it might not be so old rub rub a toothbrush on it and then you're good to go but that's what i mean like at that really quite a low price for a high-tech wearable this is a way to get anyone into apple watches without feeling like without bulking at you know 400 prices um i i i agree with you i think the price is good i just wish they would bring it to like maybe i don't know i don't know what they've probably discontinued the four and the five you know what i mean so they're not making them anymore and they can't just bring that lower pricing uh and report it over was last year as well that's why i was gonna say still pretty new that's still 279 maybe next year like i'm sure this is the last year for season exactly maybe next year the s e is the base 199 model and then we'll we'll see the six and the seven take the middle and the higher end range or we could get a new special edition that's what i could see if they do kind of take a bit too you know a yeah a big turn with the design they could do what they did last year and kind of have another se yeah we'll see we'll see yeah we've only just got the new ones let's stop looking so far ahead and just deal with i know yeah we can't help ourselves okay two questions from the chat one ryan nakvey i believe said what do you guys think if your option is between upgrading your iphone 11 to 13 or watch series 5 to series 7 and then also getting the ipad mini i guess what would be the better move er i think if if i'm reading your question correctly doing the watch upgrade and also getting the ipad mini seems like a great deal if it's for the same price um but then you know it really depends on your needs right like the iphone or which one is more yeah so like a noteworthy change you know like the new thinner design i think i think they're both good options but i think share made the right point like you're probably going to use your iphone more than both of those other devices unless you really feel like maybe you're a student and you're really going to be into your ipad or you've got comics to read or that's where you watch your kindle or your netflix you know where you read your kindle or watch your netflix that ipad and we both really want to talk about the ipad mini but don't wrap up you've got to wrap up the watch and fitness plus first but yeah i guess we're gonna they both have good arguments but i probably lean towards upgrading your phone before upgrading your work yes we're we're gonna get to ipad shortly i think we're almost ready to get to the ipad uh ipad is there anything else about watchtv7 or should we quickly shout out fitness plus or or was all we said enough thanks fitness that's exactly what i was going to say let's talk yes working on my fitness like gwen stefani is that is that what she said she has she has a song about that yeah i think it's her no fergie fergie fergie fergie fergie i'm sorry they don't all just look alike gasp um i'm sorry fitness club oh the one last thing speaking of fergie and gwen stefani i want to shout out ryan gosling in our chat with saying that they have the the watch series three and like it's good for you thanks for tuning in ryan gosling thanks ryan totally thank you wrestling uh yes but fitness plus what did you want to bring up about fitness plus matt so we've kind of talked and gossiped about fitness plus a fair bit since it got launched um we've kind of compared our own opinions on the trainers and the yoga and the hit and and so there is a feature here that we might actually properly use and that's the ability to share your workouts so the idea is you can actually team up with other people on fitness plus and do group workouts and it'll all be shared via share play which is actually well it's an ios 15 feature that's not going to launch when it comes not yet but anyway yeah not yet but yeah this is great you know it's like doing a team you know like a group workout class but you don't have to go to the same gym um and with the kind of with the metrics and the way the apple watch tracks your workouts that seems like a really great fun competitive kind of vivial way to do your workouts with people you you know and you you'd want to work out with hopefully i i love this feature i mean i know a lot of people do like i mean imagine what to do for like all the indie studios that are kind of macgyvering zoom or you know g google hangouts to host their fitness classes right now i mean it allows for up to 32 people to work out together that's about the size of a class of course it depends on the the strength of your connection and your bandwidth and all of that but if you're just getting together a group of your friends for a small yoga session which i know a lot of my friends in singapore have been doing this really makes things easier um i'd love to see what the cross compatibility is on this obviously it sounds like you have to have fitness plus so which by the way means you need to have an apple watch so there's just a lot of prerequisites for this to work uh which limits the number of people i can use this feature with but hey matt and i are gonna do taiji together just so you all know or yoga we're probably gonna trick uh video producer brian oh to do it with us until he he kind of just smokes us into the ground with his better fitness and then we'll never do it with him well yeah he is he is the most fit out of all of us he is the fit fluencer and yeah but that was that was the main strokes of fitness plus wasn't it so we know that pilates is around the corner no word on the tai chi which me and share are both far more interested in um and yeah they're gonna they're gonna be revealing a new kind of training program for anyone trying to get ready for snow season which just kind of makes me roll my eyes and just reminds me of what apple how apple sometimes pitches itself to people it's just very much like money everywhere it's time to go snowboarding and skiing with our new watches and our phones maybe yeah so i look the the winter sports thing was kind of interesting i was just like pretending to ski at home no thank you uh not my thing and aaron uh in our chat uh asked cause why are all the fitness plus trainers intolerable uh someone else in the channel yeah i don't agree i don't agree obd and said why do ob dean said why do all the fitness blustery smile so wide while presenting it seems a bit creepy i i like some of them when i was testing the finish plus they they actually seem more likeable than some other trainers i've worked with um not in person over these uh video workouts if only because they're like good at counting for one they don't like oh we're doing 20 more guys 20 19. you've got such low expectations you're like my trainer's really good at counting that's like yeah about a five-year-old it's just like such low stakes i find them all yeah i find only two of them good the rest yeah i find intolerable really intolerable and maybe that's just more about me yeah than it is to each their own okay to each their own so so so so there were i think we're now trying to get into ipad and and save some time for these general event thoughts because there's a lot coming like temperature prince was like this event was a joke uh we have other people asking other questions about the event which i want to get to but i also want to point out name checks out asks can we talk about the pros uh hey we already did you want to maybe rewind this video a little bit we talked about the iphone 13 pros a little bit earlier and julius in the chat says you guys are tripping sam is a dope trainer i like i like bukhari i like um jessica uh i like the um dance instructor uh i forget all their names now but you know anyhow matt ipads the ipad i know ipad mini 6 and ipad 9. one thing that the chat already pointed out i believe it was demand one of our regulars um pointed out the starting price of the ipad mini 6 being i think it was 4.99 yes 4.99 high as hell it is what the hell look 500 for an 8 inch tablet was like 8.3 inch screen i get that the design is like premium and all but pretty especially when you consider that the i know especially when you consider that the entry-level ipad is like what 399 or something even though that's a super outdated design it's it's hard to feel like it's really do you remember the wait do you remember the prices of the iphone 13s they're all 6.99

they start at 6.99 uh yeah so i don't see that as an issue really okay it is more i mean it is more expensive it's a more expensive design than the other base ipad i think maybe because it's been announced alongside the cheaper entry-level ipad right which is three maybe you wanna say three four nine without education discount i think three four nine three two nine so three hundred twenty nine dollars yeah um i i might just sound spicy yes mike jones jr points out the 329 ipad has been stripped of all the features that's that's what i was going to say is that like the 500 you're paying for things like yes apple pencil support you're paying for all the premium stuff that comes with the 12 megapixel camera and just it's it's uh you know what like against the android tablets out there at this price it does seem like apple's offering more especially by way of ipad os even though that's a smaller screen ipad os does allow for like better multiple accessories as well whenever we're streaming share we always kind of retread this argument about android tablets and the relevancy or who are they for and they still are for people but yet they struggle to kind of match they are for people yeah well they're people yeah people including ob dean also points out that the 64 gig base model the 64 gig storage for the base model is definitely kind of atrocious it's uh i mean five hundred dollars is fine but 64 gigs and that's already doubled i think or or i might be getting that wrong um that's that's that's not a great friend i said friends it's still the most exciting new product of this show though because notably changed uh compared to everything else it's quite 12 to 13 it's you know it's a gentle step up i think the pro models again i've already mentioned it but the pro model seemed like a much bigger upgrade than the more basic level iphone 13s but yeah the mini we've been i've been waiting for any upgrade i i come and go with ipads i owned an ipad mini for a while then i just stopped using it fell out of interest i think i gave it to my mom i think i know it's hard to justify yeah this one has on yeah this has pencil uh second generation pencil support so you can latch it to the side um the base the new base level ipad has support only for first generation pencil so you know a bit more reduced functionality but there is some functionality at least there can i say though that like when i see people hold it with one hand and and that sort of stuff it i just almost feel the urge to fold it in half i almost i almost feel like this is a z fold forget how strong you've got since you've been started doing fitness plus i'm strong oh man i could fold anything in half yeah it's a bit squarish isn't it yeah it looks like a 90 degree rotated fold yeah when it's held vertically so the mini 6 the mini 6 is the more interesting of the pair but the ipad 9 itself got some small upgrades i mean i honestly can't even remember but center stage is one of the things where like the the camera is able to keep you in view while you're on a video call which is probably what most people use ipads for nowadays um the design is still i mean it's probably one of the last remaining apple devices that still has a home button on it which yeah true great true yeah yeah um well i did notice i'm not sure i don't think this has come up before with ios 15 but this center stage feature it's not just face time but it'll work in third-party apps that are supported so zoom is supported you can uh upload the videos to tiktok which i think was cool explain everything double take um also webex video calls alongside zoom and blue jeans so again this is this is like more of the story of last year last year's um you know oh my god i can't remember which year it is whenever we last did i think wwdc where apple was kind of opening the gates a little bit more to third-party stuff this is another yes it was this year yes yeah that's why that was like was that when the iphones when when when i was allowed out on my house did that happen i can't remember no i don't think you were yeah i wasn't allowed at my house no and you should say it uh we we have a few very good questions in the chat but it sounds like you know a lot of people definitely felt that 64 gig um storage for the base model of the ipad mini 6 was was a travesty uh and we agree with you love strong words i love it it was a catastrophe yeah i don't know why we randomly flashed the windows logo but uh maybe it's to remind you that uh you know there's a microsoft event coming up next week and that you should come back here for great heart take downs like this oh microsoft don't worry guys you'll have you'll probably have davindra and he actually knows what he's talking about which is better than me and hey but also it's hotter bitinger takedowns anyhow um now let's talk about just general thoughts because a lot of you have sent us these types of questions like praveen kumar mj says is apple really doing any innovation in phones i've got a lot of people asking whether i would prefer like a like a galaxy tab or something or you know galaxy watch 4 if that ecosystem is better than the apple watch lots of comparison questions y'all matt what did you think of the event overall yeah i think it was quite a mild event um i think because like it was just mild i think yeah like not disappointing everything's like i think sometimes we you can kind of fall back to the easy apple complaints expensive bad battery life copying um you can kind of repeat on those notes a lot but we got a lot of improvements there like here in the uk a few of the phones are actually cheaper than they were last year so that's awesome um the batteries are bigger in across all the devices and that's especially notable in the mini which i love i wrote a whole article about how much i love the iphone mini you can read that on engadget um what other things like again the ipad mini was quite compelling it looks like just attractive hardware which is what apple does best and the watch again uh more more more screen is always great um i remember upgrading to god now you're asking me whenever i think it was was it series 3 to series 4 and they substantially increased the real estate of the screen on the apple watch and it was so much easier to use just uh tapping in your passcode to unlock it it just those are some balls so i can only imagine that more screen yet again will make an even better apple watch experience um and i'm and i'm still kind of a fitness plus guy as well so i'm kind of glad they're sticking to it um oddly are we gonna do everything they didn't mention we've talked about uh new airpods but no mention of apple arcade or news or everything else the kind of the other parts of the apple kind of software ecosystem any thoughts on that no they never mentioned outrightly and even i think they had just so much to talk about that they couldn't get to it maybe i i would be interested in seeing we again as a reminder for those who may have joined the stream more recently the ios 15 and watch os 8 release dates are september 20th uh i'm not entirely sure on the mac os release date just yet believe that should be the same for ipad os as well um and you know a lot of the ios 15 features that are coming will be coming to older phones too so like things like share play that things that i'm excited about right like are also going to be available on older phones um the other thing that will be worth kind of looking out for is apple's csam um detection tools that it talks about that got a lot of controversy yeah a little earlier this year um it's how apple is going to use uh or sort of scan on device the photos in or the content in on your phone and see if they match with any known child sexual abuse media um so that's an ios 15 thing so it's just a bunch of things to look out for in ios 15. uh privacy too by the way was like a thing that got sort of shouted out remember um somewhere in between iphone 13 and iphone 13 pro um but not as big a deal made i think as in years past maybe because they didn't really have that many new features to announce like one year they had the app store nutritional label like the privacy label thing um to announce but that was i think at wwdc but yeah no this was purely a hardware event and uh no airpods three still remains kind of a confusion to me to apple's credit it was also it had it had quite a pace to it right it kind of yes swung through everything in a very nice speed it kind of finished a little bit earlier than we thought it would which is nice um but yeah like it kind of delivered the notes uh apple still does those really useful kind of visual representations of their new devices and their new software and that's always great to see um and yeah like i just think it was it was quite there was nothing like particularly wow the ipad mini again it looks like the most the coolest thing announced but it's the iphone 13 that people are all going to be buying when they go yes yeah like hotcakes uh the fact that so many of you have been asking if you should be upgrading from 11 to 13. i will say that when i was writing the what to expect post for the event uh my sub head my sub header or what we call a deck uh was already nothing radically different is expected we we kind of knew this is technically don't forget an s year um for apple so for the iphone 13 to be not significantly different isn't that much of a surprise the ipad 9 also not super exciting the watch 7 not that exciting ipad mini the biggest surprise about it is that it exists i don't know like it's expensive 64 gigs you know i mean profile you know the shape of it's a little bit different to the minis of the past because you know they got rid of the home button there's usbc please just put it on my phone maybe next year oh my gosh they will never look we've i've had this conversation they might when it makes financial sense or when they can change the made for iphone program to somehow be exclusive like a thunderbolt kind of right like like a special usbc yeah exactly yeah that sounds very apple yeah what would you say what did you think of the show in general then in some like i made this i had a hot sake which is that apple's production value [Laughter] on their little like trailer video type things has super increased since uh they launched the tv plus streaming service and since they started like you know having buying shows and being in the business of producing original content uh speaking of shout outs to uh ted lasso which i love uh i also like mythic quest and i actually enjoy physical um but like you know apple tv plus is getting better this this feel at times like i was watching a very kind of like earnestly made like at times it's like oh my gosh we're just going to be big on the entertainment industry now because we won so many awards and if they gave out awards for keynotes we would win one too like i don't know if god imagine an emmy's for like product keynote announcement things how depressing with that having said that there was like a very creepy ethereal field just because of the high production when it is just an awkward tech exec stood on the cliff side like there's something really weird about it that didn't it felt like otherworldly and not quite real and i don't know why that was was it just like premium values without any kind of dramatic thing happening on screen i don't know but there was something really kind of uncanny about these you know serious apple execs just walking in fields and nature and probably what is glorious 4k footage for sure do you think that do you feel it didn't look a little it looks a little bit not quite real you mean the you you thought it was green screen wasn't like someone on our team thought it was great like somewhere in the middle yeah some kind of uncanny valley yeah half green screen half made in an unreal engine kind of you know i yeah it could be i i'm just like where so that the event title was california streaming and i'm like oh what was the streaming all about here then like where what are you what are you streaming like maybe i don't know 5g because they did sort of do a breakaway section on 5g which is like okay we get it like like it's 2021 like it's still not here yet stop um i don't i don't really know what apple really there didn't seem to be a coherent overall theme um in fact i'm i'm i'm pulling a sherlin and i'm pulling out questions so daniel cocaine says was a new mag charger announced in gadget kind of but not what you hoped so there's some new mag safe accessories they haven't really changed mags if it's not again the rumors were wrong there's not a more powerful magnet or like a faster charging mag safe there's a new magsafe wallet that will be compatible with find my uh so you'll be able to kind of track where the wallet perhaps falls off um although i'm intrigued to see how that will actually work because there's not much technology to the wallet maybe the phone will just track when it falls off and leave a like we're gonna have to we're gonna have to like delve into that a bit more uh other mag safe news not much to be honest nothing we were hearing rumors about yeah stronger magnets on the on the i think it would be max yeah i think it'd be very offensive to bring out an improved mag safe a year after the first one launched yeah maybe they're saving it for next year so that they can force people to should in a way but no i think it's well imagine if they announced it this year and like all your previous mag saves like or just weaker flippy clam shell one which i absolutely ooh um i'm gonna take over looking at your chat questions um you know mail sensitivity says that they're learning linux good for you excuse me so imagine so imagine if you notice that the the apple watch puck has been fast charging now for series seven so imagine that's now been downgraded and then the mag save was changed and this thing's like quite expensive for what it is it's like over 100 quid for a floppy charger so yeah if apple came out with it with these new technologies that made it completely you know out of date in under a year i'd be very annoyed by that can i just point out that armando fernandez in the chat said to your point all those nature scenes were cgi just like roy kent himself yeah no i don't i look roy can't is real in my heart brett goldstein totally 100 he plays that character in everything he does i've seen him on like comedy shows and podcasts he's still very much exactly like that yeah yeah it seems like it um i think overall it seems like yeah the general consensus is this was not a huge upgrade significant surprising sort of year um for the apple launch things that were supposed to be coming uh like airpods three are missing and also there's rumors of a macbook pro redesign on the horizon so i would say that if you were disappointed that your you know the product you were looking out for didn't appear today i wouldn't be surprised if like apple has invites for another event like soon so and and probably like right in time for holiday shopping season two so like late october early thought you were gonna say right in time for halloween that'll be awesome no i mean maybe like yeah i'm gonna be an iphone 13 for halloween sure or or magsafe i don't know so all these phones are presumably going to be winging their way to you cher for reviewing have you already got kind of an idea about which phone you're going to like the most i think i will most likely use as daily driver the either the smaller pro or the bigger like the regular iphone 13. um the mini as much as i was taken with it the when the 12 mini launched i don't think seems very practical for daily use just because of battery life but who knows maybe the the 13 mini would be nice um the pro max is just too big for me 6.7 inch screen i think i can deal with the 6.1 inch pro

for the greater like the better cameras but what i've been meaning in terms of my iphone device and this is somewhat related to one of the questions from michael brusher which is how do i mean both android and ios um it's difficult really but let's just say that um the one that i've been meaning of all the four iphone 12s i have is the iphone 12 like not the pro and not the mini so it's like the right size and it's got all the good features i don't really need all the camera um boost on an iphone although i i also sometimes take out the iphone 12 pro um just to do like camera comparison testing with um and then to answer that question about android and ios balance i just kind of have to keep switching my sims it would be a lot easier to main both android and ios if whatsapp wasn't such a piece of crap anyway that has been nice what's app more like what's crap wow that's quite a strong accent that came out with that what's that print i mean i'm i'm uh i'm a juggler but i live in the uk and that means i can actually i actually i just have a second sim that's part of my my plan on my network so i actually have a sim in my pixel and i have a in whatever end of my phone i'm using at the time so that's how i do it but i also don't have to review as many phones as sherlin so i dodged a bullet there oh you will soon no i'm going on holiday remember i'm on holiday thursday two weeks bye yeah exactly i would have helped but there's conversations that are having being had now that that uh that people can hear aaron needs to know matt is going on holiday so too bad bye um i would have probably done an ios 15 review but let's see how far we get when i'm back oh that we can wait on it's it's all good but would the people on the stream like to know where i'm going on prefer the pixel 6 or the new iphones now i haven't seen the iphones in person yet i will very soon but i haven't yet i have seen the pixel 6 in person and just judging from what i've seen so far i think the pixel 6 will be a more significant update from their predecessor so in terms of added value from last year the pixel 6 will be better than the 13 right just looking at pure value improvements alone ass phones themselves i don't i feel like they might be on par with each other i'm nervous i mean the pixel 5 last year was kind of high mid-rangey wasn't it it wasn't pushing the barriers suspect of specs when it came to like processors and cameras and screens and stuff so they kind of have a bigger gap that they can make up with the pixel six and we already know that the hardware is going to look insanely different looks like yes like clock from the x-men was a phone it's like that yes with the cameras true yeah i guess um it might be more exciting but would that make it a better phone i don't know i i i yeah i don't know we will have to test a lot of the claims out in in real life right because the pixel 6 one of the big things is camera improvements and google whenever it does a big leap with you know photography it actually makes a significant impact on the rest of the industry so i am excited to see if that's what's happening again this time but i haven't been able to judge so gonzalo cross i just i i will say this that i think the the pixel 6 will be more of an upgrade and an update from its predecessor but side by side i think the 13 and the pixel 6 will probably just feel like both are very good phones you know i mean i feel like i'm going to walk away from both reviews going they're both pretty good the real comparison to be made is really the pixel 6 against something like the galaxy s21 or the s21 ultra um and and we'll also have to i don't think there's i don't think there's many people you know in a wider phone buying world that like me and share and can kind of happily go to a new pixel or an iphone and not really miss any of the changes i still think there is a leaps you have to make to go from either a long-running android user or a long-running iphone user across to the other side so yeah i think like you already know what are you doing um you already know i'm making myself new headphones i'm gonna i'm gonna put like a handle a strap between the two and these are like in the winter i'm just gonna wear my one of my phones like this this is my new airpods uh wait a minute can you i want to guess the phones can you okay iphone 12 um oh a pixel 5 5a yeah yeah the latest of the two yeah latest of the two flagships here you go meaning the maining them pretty hardcore um i am interested in the pink iphone 13. that's a
