Home Bakery Business Tips | Can You Make Over $1200 a Week in Your Home Bakery

[Music] okay i am going to answer some home bakery questions today but first you can start putting your questions in the comments and then i will get to them whenever i um really get distracted okay so today we're going to talk about if and how it's possible to make more money in your home bakery so i'm talking like twelve hundred dollars a week twenty five hundred dollars a week like more than what a lot of people think is possible so we're going to talk about how that can be possible if it's even possible for your business so yes if you have questions you can just start putting them in the comments and i will answer them as i go um whenever i lose my train of thought okay so the first thing you have to do is you have to see if it's even possible for you to make that amount of money at the price you have it at because the bad thing with macarons cupcakes whatever the bad thing about home bakeries is we have to make every single product so we have a limit on what we can make because we can only make so much it's not like we're getting our product from a factory where we can just have kind of more made if we need to we have to that's why it's so important that you have the right price because you don't have the right price and you want to make twelve hundred dollars in a day it's not possible you literally can only make so many i'm gonna use macarons as an example so many macarons in one day in one week that you kind of have to you just cap out at a certain amount so what you have to do is take whatever your goal is i would aim high i would see what the most you could make is and see if that is good enough and then i would go above that so let's say you sell your macarons for 150 which don't do that but you sell them for 150. so put together how many macarons you could possibly make in one day or in one week and see what that number is if that number is a really low number that's how you also know that you need to raise your prices so let's say you want to do twelve hundred dollars in a day or let's call it a week because we're bakers most of the time if you're baking sure you could do twelve hundred dollars in a week but you still to make all the product so that i would kind of assume is the limit most people there's some people in the home bakery blueprint program that do um there's one lady who does she said she does like 2500 or 2 600 every week but i think she might be um she said that was maybe just on holidays so she says she does mostly fifteen hundred dollars a week on regular days and then um holidays it'll raise it up so i would say go aim for something like twelve hundred dollars um twelve hundred dollars a week on regular weeks and then know that okay these are these are busy weeks i'm going to have to really work a lot so let's say you want to make twelve hundred dollars a week twelve hundred dollars your macarons cost 275 each and this can be used for any baked goods you take that divide it so that means you have to sell 400 and about 437 i did the math ahead of time because i cannot do that my head so 437 macrons so that's doable in a week if you've got you know a system set up and you've got that worked out ahead of time but let's say you're charging um let's see here i'm gonna use my calculator 12. if you want to make twelve hundred dollars in a week and you're charging two dollars well that was obvious it's 600 you would have to make 600 macarons so that gets a little more difficult so that is just another reason why you should raise your prices if those are your goals okay i'm gonna answer some of these questions um how can we gain or attract customers so there's a lot of different ways you can get customers like most home bakers once they're on a roll they don't even have to use all the things that we teach you to use to get more customers it's just like okay this is what was worked for me this is all i can do now because i'm at my limit of baking or whatever so i mean it kind of depends what is available to you but if you can do farmers markets if you can do pop-ups i talk about that all the time do those do farmers markets do pop-ups do events anywhere where you can get out in person and kind of give out samples talk to your customers um there are ways you can do it on social media but that's a little more it's not more difficult but it is somewhat harder to gain their trust on social media if they don't see you there in person new algorithms killed our business so what do you mean by that on instagram that is always going to be the case though like they're always changing the algorithm but i've said this before the main thing that is important on any site that is trying to have well i guess every site wants customer retention but like is just how long you can keep someone on your page with your content so no matter what that is going to be the goal so as long as you're consistently providing valuable content and like your audience is being feels like they're learning something or getting a lot of value from whatever you're posting the algorithm will work in your favor um [Music] do you have to be licensed yeah in most in most places you need to get some sort of license or something to sell i think i don't know maybe there's like there's a couple states that you don't have to like go and actually get a license but you just to follow the rules so ohio we don't for the basic cottage laws in ohio we don't have to actually have an inspection and get a physical license for just the cottage dolls we just have to bake under the cottage low so we have to follow all the rules that they have as the cottage all so that means um no perishable ingredients um no like meat or anything like that um and you have to make sure you're really following the rules so like you have to label correctly you can only sell in certain like places um stuff like that so some places you don't actually need a physical license but you have to follow the rules of the um state if selling at farmers markets what are some sources for refrigeration for cake slices with italian meringue buttercream does italian wearing buttercream need to be refrigerated due to health code um it what state are you in i'm sure it does wherever you are but well italian meringue it depends on the state um what i tell people to do at farmer's markets if they're like florida people at farmer's markets in california and stuff well i'm pretty much anywhere i say keep it in the cooler all the time and just put a couple out for samples or if that's gonna melt just have photos of what you have i mean because it's not going to look as full but think about what like ice cream shops do and stuff like that like they can't have their product out the cheese people can't have their product out so you don't want your baked goods sitting out there looking all melted and gross so i would bring a cooler or something like that but if you have access to a plug definitely bring like a little plug-in thing if you can um i just bought the texas law recipe book for texas and there's cream cheese frosting with pumpkin cream cheese and oh and butter which i thought both were not allowed what a surprise yeah so some states offer a cottage law recipe book well i guess it i mean you could probably use like in other states if you have the same laws but like how olga says they have a cottage law recipe book like here are examples of recipes that you can use you can always use them as a like they lied to me i know a lot of not a lot but sometimes you can get different answers from different people how can i decide what to sell i love making cakes cupcakes and cookies so have you gotten any feedback from any of those i would have people try them out okay any questions so far about the pricing stuff i get okay so let me see what else i have written down here so okay most of the people that started making 1200 a lot of them they started from scratch so i see people get intimidated by that those numbers like they never could imagine that they could make 1200 in a week a day like that's scary for them to hear because they think i could never do that a lot of the people in the program that make that started from scratch they didn't have any follower i mean we all started from scratch actually no i hate that when people say we all started from zero on social media because no a lot of people have not a lot but a lot of the huge influencers some people build up this is me going on a separate rant here some people build up social media accounts and then sell them so it is very likely that a lot of people did not start from zero they started from a hundred thousand they started from two hundred thousand and they just kind of took it from there so i don't like that saying so um but these people they did start from zero they didn't have those accounts bought for them now this is all okay yeah you can put your questions in the question thing or the comments i'll be able to see both of them okay they started from scratch the main thing that uh a lot of these people did that are making this is that they did events so they went out into their community they didn't rely on just custom orders so if you are not able to do wholesale farmers markets most states can do farmers markets if you can't most states can do pop-ups so do as many pop-ups do events get into wedding vendor events the thing about wedding vendor events is they are not very profitable when you first go there like you can go vendor events is get into wedding vendor events the thing about wedding vendor events is they are not very profitable when you first go there like you can go there and think dang i didn't make any sales that was not a success but a lot of big wedding orders can come from the people you met and the samples you gave out so when you go to a wedding event you might be selling there don't expect for it to be like a huge money maker for you for most wedding events like wedding vendor events but know that that is where you make connections and if they don't want to buy for weddings you've got um bridal showers even baby showers a lot of the contacts i made at wedding vendor events were to um they eventually maybe they didn't buy for the wedding or if they did buy for their wedding then they bought for also for their bridal shower their bachelorette party and then for their baby showers is there a spreadsheet to help calculate costs and product prices um so in the program there's a spreadsheet that we have that you put in so it's set up for you put in all of your ingredients and the cost of the ingredients and then you put in how much of those ingredients you use for every recipe so you have one spreadsheet that has all of your ingredients in it so when almond flour goes up or prices of things goes up you can just adjust that price up and then it will go and it's connected to another spreadsheet where you put in your different recipes and it breaks it down like okay this is how much this one cost based on this recipe so make sense i feel like i didn't explain that very well basically it's all hooked together and as you change the price of that it will change the price of the individual batch and then that goes into another spreadsheet it's hooked into another spreadsheet i'm not an excel expert but this was like this is like my pride here in pride and joy um then that's hooked into another spreadsheet that shows you okay this is how much one macaron costs or whatever you're making this is then you put in the packaging price um all of the packaging stuff you use the tape the labels everything then yeah the programs the program cost money um i have a couple different payment options so you can send me a dm um if you want to apply um and i'll send over some of the payment plan options okay so then another spreadsheet so you've got you figured out how much it costs to make a batch then that's hooked into another one where you put in your all of your supplies so i really emphasize making that you put all of the stuff that you use for your business into this so then there's like an overhead cost like the equipment you're using um your stamps that would go under packaging but like anything you're using that you bought for your business that can kind of go into your overhead cost and then that's divided by all the products and then that goes into the price of the individual one so it's you don't put all the overhead into each group of recipes you put it into the whole year um i think i missed someone's question okay yes you asked if there was a spreadsheet to help calculate costs and product prices and then a section where you put in how much you should be getting paid because that's very important because how much you should be getting this is important if you okay you're charging for your products your ingredients your packaging supplies your overhead you're paying yourself and then you also have to make sure that you are charging enough that you have money that you can put back into your business to continue to grow your business that's why i'm always saying you have to charge more because sure you might be charging for your ingredients but you need to have money that you're paying yourself like an employee because if this grows into a storefront or whatever and you do hire employees eventually what are you going to do how you can pay them so make sure you're paying yourself and then enough so you can take money extra money besides the product to price and you paying yourself and put it back into your business so you can continue to grow it okay let me know if that didn't make sense i feel like i got a little bit on a rant there so these people that are making that much they charge they charge enough that is important you can't be making i mean you can but you might quickly burn out if you're trying to make that much and you're only charging you know 150 175 a macaron now yes most important they did events they were consistent like one of the [Music] bakers in the group still has her job so she was doing this while she also had another job so a lot of people are kind of worried that i have my job i don't quit i need my job for my health insurance all that stuff this kind of thing is possible but you have to make sure that you have systems set up so you're not just kind of up in a frenzy every time you get um an order and everything's organized okay does anyone have questions so far how many macarons does your full recipe make i always do half your recipes so i guess double that right it depends on how big they are a lot of people were saying they made a lot it made a lot more than i thought it made i'm pretty sure it was always like 52 or something that could be wrong i haven't made that kind of batch in a while um okay so yes like i was saying a lot of them got out in front of people did events i don't know i think some one of them just did farmer's markets i just posted this on my story can we purchase the spreadsheet separately i don't offer the spreadsheet separately i did have someone else ask that too maybe that's something i'll consider but um it's important that it goes along with all the other stuff uh can pricing be like three ingredients is this pricing rule okay what do you mean by that tell me a little bit more about that okay so yeah the common theme with all these bakers the ones that are going on to store fronts going to commercial kitchens making over a thousand dollars a week is that they are doing events they're getting out in front of their community they're meeting people they're not just relying on at-home stuff and the good thing about that is if you do at least jump-start your business yes that makes sense okay good um let me know if anyone has questions about the pricing stuff i feel like i was rambling if you do so i always this you probably already know this but i did like five farmers markets the first summer that was kind of a way for me to jump start my business i definitely did not do that every year that would have been miserable so it was a way for me to check out all the farmers markets in the area see which ones were the best and then also get my product out in front of a bunch of different people get samples out tell them what they were because i live in like a small i did live in a small town in um ohio so it was like no one knew what macarons were so i was really working to get that product out there so people could taste it okay so um oh i see is that what okay i use the calculation of cost of goods ingredient packaging hourly wage times three for my selling price i may round up to make an appropriate price okay no that's not what you're saying okay um what do you what does that equal right now for you um i lost my train of thought okay so that was a good way to kick start my business so if you're like hey karen so if you're like i don't want to do that every summer that sounds miserable it was miserable i remember thinking that summer all i want to do is go into a swimming pool that is all i wanted to and i never got to okay but that is just a way that you can jump start your business then you've got some customers that are coming and ordering for events coming and ordering for their weddings and stuff like that so it's like you don't always have to be bombarded with events maybe like section off okay these are the four months out of the year where i'm going to work really hard and make a majority of my income and do a bunch of pop-ups a bunch of you can do a pop-up every single week literally there are so many freaking ways for you to grow as a home baker you could do a pop-up every single week you could do because a lot of us live in cold areas and there's no farmers markets year round so that's not possible but if you do your farmers markets all summer a lot of the times you can make your whole income just doing the farmers markets during the summer and then chill the rest of the year but you usually won't want to because you're going to have all of those you're going to have all of those customers that want your product because you were giving them the product every month every week at the farmer's market they're going to be ordering from your website what during the off season so they will be coming back getting you know christmas orders you are they're going to be coming back getting orders for the holidays orders for valentine's day easter so it can be scary to only do the farmers markets but then i would i suggest doing pop-ups because we're going to miss you during the off season okay yes you can do it i do farmers marketing is awesome didn't you just say that also you're full time now and that's just doing farmers markets so that's great farmers markets really are great and surprisingly a lot of the best customers i have are other vendors in the farmers markets because you're there every week with them you really get to know them and um they tell people about you and it's just it's a really nice little community when you do the farmers markets what are your thoughts on doing a market that has an oh an established mac vendor feel like i would be stepping on toes so around here a lot of the vendors like a lot of the i mean markets farmers markets they don't let doubles come in so i mean they let multiple bakers as long as there's kind of a variety but if they wouldn't let multiple macaron bakers come in they want some sort of variety so i mean it kind of depends if you have different flavors if i would recommend reaching out to them because i'm all about like kind of that community over competition thing so i would maybe reach out to them and just make sure you're not doing the same flavors because i mean think of how many different vegetable vendors there are and and different bakers like i would maybe reach out and just be like hey i'm going to be doing the market too um i just want to make sure we're not doing the same flavors sometimes at farmers markets we would plan like there were other bakers and stuff we would plan maybe a same here no multiples yeah it depends on the market um events we plan events and do like let's do a brunch day and and the other baker would do that so it was like we were kind of working together a little bit so it was like people would want to come and get some of from this tent and also from that one um what insurance do you recommend so that is totally based on your situation and um your business i can't really answer that um what i recommend in the in the homemaker blueprint program is you really have to talk to your insurance agent because when i first started i didn't really have anything you know i didn't own a house didn't have family so it was like mine wasn't as big of a deal as say someone with like a whole home and and also when you're when you're setting up your business so deciding on whether you should get an llc or what you should do in that area that really is personal depends on that i was invited by the event coordinator okay i would definitely do it i would reach out to them though and just maybe say i think the other bakers in your group i would definitely reach out that's awesome and just make sure you're not doing the same flavors and maybe you can even do flavors that complement each other hey mom okay oh good okay so this one says country financial did a 1 million writer on my home owners policy i have an llc um june says i have a 1 million too yes a lot of farmers markets around here require you to do the one million so yeah you might want to see what if you're doing a farmers market and see what they require you
