[music playing] Please welcome Vice President, IoT, AWS, Yasser Alsaied. [music playing] Good morning. My name is Yasser Alsaied, I am thrilled and honored to have you in the very first leadership session in re:Invent this year. [cheering and applause] So today we will be talking about a technology that's quickly changing the world. It's growing so quick that we are inventing services and features that's catching up to make sure that we have customers, reserved and their customers have better life, the way they live at home work, deal with our environment. I'll start that presentation.

Sorry, back one, please. Sorry. I'll start the presentation by walking you through the impact of IoT on businesses. Then I'll be joined by my colleague Wendy Bauer, the head of the automotive business unit, to talk about how IoT is key in the software defined vehicles. Later, I'm happy to have the executive vice president of cloud business in LGCNS to talk about their innovation.

So let's start. So IoT technology is enabling transformation everywhere. It's shifting the world as we know it, and it is nothing that is people are trying to make money from or, trying to get like a fun technology to work on.

It's a necessity. But it's not a new, if we all remember back in the days where we had coin phones or the vendor machine, they did have a concept of IoT, but it was like one to one. And usually the messaging tool to get the collection of the coin or to fill the vendor machine is what usually, is used for those things.

But what changed now? The internet, it changed it to become at scale. So as much as we have internet connection, you can have IoT devices connected to the internet. And this year, according to the IoT analytics, there is more than 14 billion devices, IoT devices connected to the internet. From smart devices all the way to the simplest sensors that cost probably $2.

And that is just the beginning, because the digitization in the world is just started to become something that is necessary to change to better our life and environment. So let's take some examples. At home, we have many consumer electronics, many devices that started to be connected.

Alarms, sensors, but also TVs. LG, LG ThinQ platform, for example, which have millions of TVs are connected to IoT for what not just to be connected for like update, but also security patches, updating of the software statistics so they can improve the product for the customer. Also in very important area, and you all probably saw, some of you saw the press release today we had in Amazon that we are going to become water positive in 2030. Water is extremely important resource and it's going to be even more important in the future. I came from the Middle East, Saudi Arabia where water is a very precious thing.

And when we have sensors to monitor the water leaks, water quality, and have these things centralized in a way that can be analyzed, then more efficiency, more usage monitoring will be enabling the cities and the companies that sort of provide the water to have better service for the customer, like in Chile for example. Also we see this increasing, need that the car is becoming more and more IoT on wheels. Smart car connected cars now is gaining more momentum. Almost all car manufacturer right now is becoming more aware of making electricals vehicles, connected vehicles and IoT is the biggest part in it. Later you'll have in the session today some more of that information.

Also, you see it in an unexpected places like Miso Robotics, one of our customers. This looks like a little bit, like a laundry set, but it's not actually. So this is a deep fryer that's, a robotic arm safely and automatically cooking the food in restaurants. And that's gaining, I saw actually much more of those happening like with noodles and others and that's all with robotics and pretty much just like IoT, in the restaurant area. But also Kone, one of our customers and partners are increasingly using it in buildings. And it's not, again, to just become a technologically aware or updated.

It's necessary for safety. If you think about the customer, your customer and how you can make their life better, then your innovation will come through and you'll find ways to actually make the product that you're providing them better. So you can have safer, the maintenance will become easier because you'll have preventive maintenance, remote access. So Kone have added all these IoT devices to escalator elevators and door controls to improve customer experiences. Also, again, I go back to the oil fields here. Hilcorp and Embassy of Things are adding IoT devices to the oil fields in the United States.

Many of them actually. And those are mainly to increase the awareness of what's going on with the machinery. So they can control if there's anything that's going to need maintenance, they increase the yield of the operation.

Oil fields need to have update because the technology for the 56-years is still doing well. A lot of areas that still working the same way it was for many years before. So adding on some of those sensors remotely increasing the ability for the company to actually prevent some disasters and, make the machines work longer and safer.

So IoT, as we said, it's reinventing how we experience and engage in our environment. It's everywhere as we just mentioned. So how these companies that I just put examples where there's thousands of these customers that we're working with, how did they decide to update their systems and their products with these digitalization units with the IoT devices? It starts with reimagining experience of the customer. What do they want to do with their customers? Making the life safer, easier, environmentally friendly. All of these things allow the inventors, the builders to build things that actually will help those customers.

So, reimagine your customer experience will help you there. Then there's a new value generation that happen when you add some digitization. So, you can actually measure what works, what doesn't work, you increase the things that actually works for you better and make more value. Some use cases are new business that actually generate more revenue for companies.

You make decisions quicker and better. So if you have maintenance, for example, that you want to do for some areas you concentrate on certain amount of machinery that you want to focus on, others that does not think in your problem, then you don't have like to hire much people there. You focus on, the areas that create problems. So people will make better business decision, where to invest.

Also drive better performance and efficiencies, to improve their operation for the business. So we show some examples, there is thousands of these customers doing, but there is still some holding back and there is some misconception that worries those customers are sharing with us and I'll go over those. Some still doesn't think IoT addressed their business problem.

They might not be aware of some technology for them that actually can help them. Some are challenged to adapt new changes. So you can imagine a factory that is producing plastic containers for the past 40 years, and then you're trying to engage with them as a vendor to give them like a new digitization units. And they say, well, I've been providing this product for 40 years, I don't want to change.

The adapting of new change, they have to see the positive outcome, like better yield, better safety, protection of the labor in the factory. That has to be explained. Also, security is a concern. While we are very proud of how our cloud security is one of the most resilient in the world, and we carry that all the way down to the edge, but still there are some of the companies, some customers feel that if I put my information out there, it probably have a security concern. So we have to work with them to make sure that their concerns addressed.

And the last, which is actually pretty important that they said, if I invest now and put some IoT technology, what about next year? What about the year after? And for those, we make sure that they understand that we have the heavy lifting when we invent IoT systems in the back, in the cloud system and the connected system, we have a heavy lifting of updating security patches, new technologies in just giving you the access to new technology. So the customer can actually focus on their differentiation. So you don't have to worry about all the way to the infrastructure. You focus on the differentiation and the heavy lifting on the backbone is ours.

So we actually work with the customer on that. But how is that? So I'm going to go over three areas of how or let me go through how we actually, what do we have to actually address those concerns? One of them, the first one is we have the deepest and broadest partner and solutions in the industry. I will share with you later how we work with partners and solutions to show you at this point.

And we have the, we make it easy to manage, collect and scale, analyze and act on the data through purpose-built services. So it's not about just having the data in the cloud. It's, we have a service built services that actually address IoT use cases. We also have, engineering team, what's called ProServ. We call it ProServ, it's a professional service. Some companies have them as ESGs like, engineering service group.

The point is there is, if you don't have the expertise in certain area to move to the IoT and digitization, we have available engineers that actually work with your team to build that. And also we have a huge set of partners that are specialized in their area. So there's partners that specialize, for example, in X-ray imaging, some in MRIs, some in oil, some in automotive. And those partners have done multiple projects connecting their customer devices to the IoT so you don't have to remake things and hire people to actually do those solutions.

Also, we are continuously innovating nonstop. Every day there's new ideas, new features. Engineers are excited to build new things for the world. And this is a passionate thing about IoT. I want to just give it second here. When you know your work is impacting positively the life of people and environment, you want to get up every day and do this because, you know in the end you're going to save a life, save a jungle from fire, save a pollution, like make a pollution managed, and so on.

That alone, if you see the hundreds of engineers that they working on every day, how to make our customers life better, that will get them to go and introduce new innovations and provide it to the world. And that's what actually get us excited about this IoT technology and the growth of it. So now I want to say how we bridge the gap with those customers that still didn't engage or didn't really get how they can go to the digitalization and the IoT adoption. So we do have, those are the three that I mentioned before.

So we do have a foundational services, which is a cloud services like everybody have access to the storage, the computer vision, the AI and so on, as well as specifically IoT foundation services that are connected, the connectivity, for example, like KVS, which is an, honestly when I learned about KVS when I joined Amazon was amazing technology. This is, this is a video streaming technology that is extremely easy to video stream from IoT devices and do not need heavy lifting on the machine itself or on the edge itself because it use a lot of the software in the cloud. And those are foundational services that can be accessed by the builders and whoever have the engineering capability actually to build or work with our engineering team to build it. And I'll give you some examples. The next one is purpose-build services.

So those are specific IoT services that our IoT engineering team put together in a way that is specifically addressing verticals like automotive, like manufacturing, and so on. And I'll give you those in the next, I think I have it in the next few slides. So let's go deeper actually. So we have more than 200 services, foundational services available for the customers. And those services can add multiple use cases and can be used by customers who have actually their own engineering team to build, but also can use our, as I said, the ProServ to build them.

And like for example, NASCAR, we have an amazing application that's done for NASCAR using ProServ, where they have ingested like, I think it was petabytes or some like huge amount of data continuously from the car by the cameras of the car, the sensors of the car giving to the driver, to the service unit, to the even the people who are watching, continuous feed with all the amount of data and this was built between, the ProServ team and the NASCAR to actually provide it. So that solution can happen with any engagement when the company or the customer wants to use a customized build solution for them. And other companies have done many of those things, but I am sharing the NASCAR, which is very famous. If we go to the purpose-built IoT services, there is in the past 12 months, we have released those four of them. The first one is the TwinMaker, which is a digital twin. So let me talk about it a little bit here.

Digital twin is something that's not new. A lot of 3D representation is available and is being around, what is different is when we have, for example, Mac Report, our partner who actually go in and actually take the 3D model of the facility, whether it's building or factory or classroom or whatever. Then all the control points, all the sensor points cameras get represented in digital twin in the TwinMaker. And you, you can actually monitor that and build over IT models over the time and have statistics and I will go over a little bit more later on how you can actually learn from it and decide based on what you see to have some actions.

Then we have SiteWise, IoT SiteWise, which is specifically done for factories. So connecting all the factory, uh, equipment and organize, analyzed data from that. Then we have lately we have the FleetWise, which is specifically for automotive, automotive trains, planes, anything that's moving. And the idea is it connects to the buses of all the controls and sensors and cameras and ingest all this data, the way the customer wants. So if you talk about a car manufacturer or a train manufacturer or helicopter manufacturer or drone manufacturer, they decide what do they want to ingest, what type of data when, how much.

So it depends what they want to find out and ongoing or at the time there was a discussion on people maybe wanted, whenever it goes to the maintenance bay, for example, they ingest all this data, but some others want continuous. So FleetWise was done for that. And then the very latest, very exciting, actually, one we just announced is the RoboRunner. And RoboRunner is as robotic is becoming more and more available and used, there will be different manufacturer of robotics, different vendors and RoboRunner orchestrate all of this to make sure that they do not collide in intersections. So the idea is like a factory or a setup, or they can add robotics as they go along. And if it's different vendors, as long as they can be put in the platform, RoboRunner can orchestrate them, so they don't have these collisions in the intersections in the floor, which is extremely useful.

So using the purpose-built, I want to bring up the CCI, which is the sixth largest factory for Coca-Cola bottling Coca-Cola in Turkey. And what happened there? They had their system, of course, Coca-Cola has been bottling forever there in Turkey, but they used to have manual processes that took hours and days to actually understand what has been happening, what's the cause of problem, the wastage, et cetera. And they made a decision to use Greengrass, which is an edge software that we have in IoT services and SiteWise on the machines.

And with that, as big as it is the sixth largest bottling factory for Coca-Cola, they were able to save 20% in energy. That's huge for such facility and for water, 9% of water was saved annually which is a big deal for them. And that's just an example.

We have SiteWise in like areas or painting and other factories, they use it specifically for monitoring and saving and maintenance as well, because you can read all the sensors. So we've talked about the two paths, the first one with the foundational services, the 200 plus, and then we have this purpose-built, but we have one more even further, and this is even more exciting. We have actually ready vetted solutions. So let's say you don't want to have the time, you want a time to market, you don't have the engineers.

You really want to have that solution because you know it's needed, but you want to get there quickly. And because we have ready solution, ready code, you can download, you can have it. And we have partner network that is huge, where I mentioned there's partners who specialize in everything. Those when come together, our partners who are specialized in areas, who knows our code, who knows our AWS methods and how they can program and build solution together for their customers. Things happen very quickly and time to market becomes extremely favorable. So I'll give example for that.

But first I want to show you, this is just a sample. Look at these list of partners all the way from chip vendor to system integrators, every name there. And there is many more have provided solutions using AWS services, IoT and other services. So when customers go to them and work with them, they already have done maybe couple of solution, three solution, like what they needed and it's ready to go. So with that, I want to give Chervon, Chervon is a company that provides power tools for indoor and outdoor, and they have, they sell their products all around the world. They decided to work with one of our partners, ThunderSoft.

And with that, they were quickly able to change the way they design things by utilizing the cloud services to share design and utilize things and do not have to remake things, saves time, of course, and I was told by the chief digital officer that it took them one day sometimes to go from one platform designed to a second one. And they are connecting IoT, systems to all these like outdoor tools and indoor tools to make more safer for the customer as well as to be able to connect to it if there's an update or so on. So this is one example, and I see it all the time when partners, which I'm actually a big, big fan of to have partners empowered to get these systems and we match-make them with the customers. So sometimes we talk to customers and they're not able to get to market quickly. We match them right away with partners that we know of, that they've done this before and things will become much easier for them. So, now we've heard about the ways AWS helping customers overcome the challenges to adopting IoT and digitization, but that's not all, we're not done helping our customer because there's something I believe in that if we focus in making sure the customer is actually successful, and this is just not words we say, we really focus about that the action towards that becomes naturally, easier to enable.

So the enablement happen between us and our partners, our people, even our customers who are actually working with us because the goal is to make them successful. So we continue innovating. I will share with you today couple of things that we are announcing today, but we, over the past 12 months, the IoT services in AWS, we have 35 new items available for the customers. Four of them are brand new services like the TwinMaker, like FleetWise and RoboRunner and so on. We have done 22 new features for the IoT, nine new APIs and integrations. So we very proud of our team and our partner who is taking this and actually bring it to the world.

We have already hundreds and thousands of customers trying these things, but including features I'm going to announced today. And you know how security is extremely important. The data sovereignty, our customer, privacy and security all the way from cloud all the way to the end is very important. So today I'm announcing the security device defender availability on AWS Security Hub.

What does that mean? So if you have a sensor all the way down in the edge, which is the simplest sensor, as long as it's connected to the IoT core, then you are able to see alarms issues in the same AWS Security Hub that you watch your other security issues. So now it doesn't have to be a gateway, it doesn't have to have a processor. Anything that's connected to IoT and it has an alarm you wanted to hear if you want to have attribute if there's an issue with it, you can see it in the same security hub that you watch for all your AWS services.

So that makes it so easy for our customers who have thousands of those sensors spread around as if there's any issue anywhere, they immediately can see it and then issue what they have to do, which make the operation very safe and secure. Then the second one I'm announcing today here is also an interesting one, which is location based services by IoT. So for people who've been industry for a while, like me, back in the end of 90s, beginning of 2000, I was part of the LBS group location based services, TR 45.2 for people who remember that. And we were focusing on using the cell sector, the mobile tower cell sectors to make a location for the devices for LBS and that was a standard for 3GPP. And we were so excited because the GPS chip wasn't available as for every device, if it's available, it's very expensive and there was no standard that, globally you can use the actual GPS satellites.

So the LBS on the cell phone was a great thing that we have broken in the 3GPP. This one is even more exciting and it's very simple and it's using one of their best location-based services that actually the world have, which is Amazon Location Services, how many packages Amazon delivers anywhere in the world accurately and easily. So imagine that service is available for your water sensor if it goes bad. So that how exciting it is because here it is, you get, let's say a thousand of these sensors around, thousands and thousands. And your team is all around the world and some sensor go bad by the time you get to it and you know where it is, you don't know how much leakage happened, how much pollution happened, with this service, it gives the longitude and latitude of that exact location. So you can actually send your crew to fix that in a very fast way with less expenses and less time to wait.

So that's extremely important for our environment, of course, and the operation of our customer. With these innovations, we are supporting many industries. If you look at the industries we have and those are examples of our current customers.

They are in manufacturing, in healthcare, logistics, smart cities, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Today I'm going to focus on two industries. One of them is the industrial factories and the other is automotive. So starting with the manufacturing. So you hear a lot of statistics about how many factories are there and how many factories are digitized, and it's astonishing how much it is taking for factory to change. But I'm not surprised, because there is a rule that we all know if it's not broken, don't change it, right? So if the factory is running, why do you want me to change it? And we're not changing it actually.

So I had the really pleasant, meetings with many of these factories. Some of them are doing simple screws, like just screws for cars, used for automotive, and they have like 40 or 50 factories in South America. And they said, I've been doing this for like 30 years, I'm not going to about to change it. And I said earlier, you don't have to change anything.

You bring a sensor to put on that engine that's been running for 10 years with AI and connectivity, and it's like small, small sensor that's cost less than a hundred bucks, five years battery. You can actually learn if it's actually something wrong with it before it's actually blow up and you did not change anything in your factory. And that's connected. If you have the Wi-Fi, cool. If you have, mobile, mobile network, cool. It's already connected there.

That's one example of a partner product that we bring to the factories. There's many of them like that. So what has been happening, there's a lot of data. It's very rich data. Factories have so much data, but 90% of it is locked in on site. So we are helping customers to unlock this and make it connected to the cloud to be monitored remotely.

Think about the professional, help that you can and have a scale with this. So the quality engineer, the maintenance engineer, you don't have to have everywhere people that duplicate it. So you can actually monitor, what the operation of the factory. If there is a problem somewhere else, you can remotely access it and watch. And we can show you some example for that and have the scale of operation easier.

AWS, you can automatically unlock your data and with the industrial data solution and preconfigured cloud-based IT application manufacturers and machine builders can accelerate their time to market. So TwinMaker I talk about a little bit in the beginning. So TwinMaker, aside from the 3D model, can read all the sensors data can, in one way help the customer with monitoring.

It was launched this year and the digital twin is, is visually representing everything happening almost in real time in the factory. And for example, that I want to share with you, John Deere, our customer was actually using, our manufacturing to the limit. So they first use our services in more than 500,000 connected machine with the farmers, that operating with farmers, including harvesters, sprayers, and so on. All this information that's sensed from those machines are coming to either their central location, John Deere or mobile phone, or even the cab of these machines each.

So this way they can help the farmer utilize this data to know what pesticides to how much pesticides they're using, what not to do, and make more yield from each acre, so that helps the farmer operation. But also they went further and they're using the digital twin inside their own factory. So before I run this video, this is a real clip. I want you to imagine the scenario of how this can be applicable to different industries. What you see on the left your left-hand side corner down, this is TwinMaker with real image took by metaphor, our partner.

And the control console is where the engineer is actually, quality engineer is get the flag that he needs to approve something. So if I'll run this, so the quality engineer get a flag that is waiting for approval. He looks at the TwinMaker 3D, image on the left-hand side to know which part of the stage the machine is at.

He will call using Chime SDK, which is a AWS product. He will call the factory personnel to check again with the camera, to actually look at the actual wiring to approve it later. So this system in one setting can see the 3D that's connected to the factory, talk to the factory floor, look in real time in camera, that's onboard the factory personnel check again, the image, and then push approved. So imagine this in different industry.

We all start to look at XR, VR, all those things a few years ago where we were talking about training classroom with a VR, with the XR, teaching mechanics and so on. This takes it a little further where you're actually looking at the real area and you can interact directly with the person in there. So I'll give an example, a car mechanics. A car let's say got stalled in an area, go to the mechanic, and then you don't have the professional engineer that actually need to look at certain fix because car's becoming more complex that needs professional look at sometimes when they, they have some issues, then you can easily have a 3D imaging on that area using TwinMaker and get the personnel to get help from somebody who's remote.

And that's really the beauty of when you have a TwinMaker digitize all this in a 3D and then have it in the cloud, then anybody can access and understand what they can help the person in remotely what to do. And that's really what's exciting about this. There's one more thing that in the manufacturing, we are releasing knowledge graph. This is another exciting feature we just released as well. Which is a graphical representation of your assets. Let's say you have five or six facilities or buildings and you want to query pumps to see what's going on with the pumps.

And you just have issues to figure out if there's any issues with any pumps. You can see graphical representation of the pumps, their relation, what they are connecting to the data that they are sending to. And if there is one or two or some have problem, you get flagged.

So it can easily dispatch maintenance people to the right facility to actually take care of it. Before it was like set of data that, oh, this alarm and then you have to dig in more and more. This one, this with the knowledge graph, you can see it in a graphical presentation.

All the relationship is drawn in front of the console and there will be like the red font on the things that, for example, not working. If it's working, it's active, it's green, so it's easy you can dispatch someone for four minutes. So this is important when you have facilities with a lot of those machines. And it'll be easier to get time, to reduce time to resolution and drive information and decision very quickly.

With that, I want to start with the next, sorry, this is going back. Sorry, this is going back. Yeah. The next one is the automotive. And with that, I'd like to welcome, Wendy Bauer to the stage.

[applause and music playing] Can you go back one on the slide. Thank you, Yasser. It's a privilege to be here with you today as IoT is taking such a strategic important role in the automotive industry. Before I jump into automotive with IoT, let me please take a step back and share with you how we think about automotive here at AWS and some of the work that we're doing. First, we strive every day to understand the industry's priorities, deeply understanding what are the disruptions, but not only what the disruptions are, really focusing what it means to our customers, the challenges it creates, and how it is impacting their future and their business models. Second, we're focused on where and how we can bring the breadth of AWS services, our partner services, and our lived experiences to our customers to help them move forward on that transformation journey.

Together, we're tackling challenges like supply chain disruption, autonomous mobility, connected mobility, and personalized customer experiences. We're supporting customers through three pillars. First, the future. We're drawing upon our wide industry knowledge and insights to help customers look towards the future and their future. AWS has a broad base of customers around the world and across the entire automotive value chain. Together with those experiences, we're focusing on deeply understanding how that future direction applies specifically to customers.

We then work with customers to understand their vision, their need, their specific problems. Only then can we partner with them to really understand the optimized solutions for them. This then informs the technology strategy and the execution plans. Second: faster. We help customers transform faster by bringing the breadth of AWS services, our partner services and building purpose-built automotive capabilities like Yasser just shared earlier. Those purpose-built capabilities, in this case, automotive include bringing in capabilities with machine learning, IoT analytics and more.

All of these brought together accelerate time to value. And third: together. In this industry, there is nothing you do alone. Working together with our customers and our partners, we're focusing on enabling that transformation. The extensive AWS Partner Network is core to that transformation success as well. We're focusing on bringing the right tools, the right capabilities in all of the right places around the world for an industry that is so global like automotive, AWS is working with customers globally.

Experiences and learnings that we have from working with leading innovation customers like those you see on this screen are shaping our ability to better anticipate future needs of our industry and our customers. Let me give you two examples. With Toyota. Toyota partnered with AWS to build the Toyota Connected Mobility platform. This platform for Toyota is offering them the ability to bring many new applications and services at a rapid pace to their customers.

One simple but valuable example is a Toyota app that helps drivers navigate post collision situations from documentation of an accident to submission of the claim to repairing the car faster. It's a simple example, but that increases and improves the customer experience. In a second example, our work with BMW, where we have been collaborating with BMW dating back to 2015 on connected cars. Today, AWS supports over 20 million connected cars and hundreds of applications. The My BMW app provides driver assistance functions, charge optimization, route guidance over the year updates and more.

And in October we announced an extension of our partnership with BMW to create a new software cloud platform that will become generalizable for the industry. That platform will allow them to process three times the volume of data that we can do today. Many of these challenges and others are all focused on one of the biggest industry trends that we see today. The journey towards software-defined vehicles. From a technical lens, our view of a software-defined vehicle is one that functions are enabled by software, but they're abstracted from hardware. Number two, the functions are enabled by a cloud-native microservices development model.

And three functions are continuously updated over the year. But we know aside from the technical viewpoint, there has to be benefits for the end customer. Let me give you a few examples.

For an end customer like you or I, software-defined vehicles are the promise that you can actually have increased value of a vehicle over its lifetime. By continuing to bring new features and new services throughout the lifetime of the vehicle, beyond the date in which you bought it. As vehicles age, you can actually have them improve and get better over their lifetime with continuous software updates. For vehicle manufacturers, software-defined vehicles are opening doors to new business models. Automakers can better understand their customers as well. When you better understand your customers, you can continue to bring them new services and features that they find value in.

And for developers, they're becoming a new platform for innovation. Software-defined vehicles will also enable greater portions of access to vehicle data than what is possible today. Greater access to data means that we can unlock new insights and we continue the innovation cycle.

When you add on machine learning capabilities or automation, that customer experience continues to thrive. The journey towards software-defined vehicles is actually just beginning, but it all starts with connectivity. Today roughly 246 million connected cars are on the road. While there's 246 million cars on the road today, many of them actually send limited updates that tend to be around navigation systems or infotainment systems. In the future, safety systems like advanced driver assistance systems or power steering that today requires updates by the manufacturer will also be able to be updated. Those next generation connected vehicles, the cloud will enable updates for the vehicle as a whole, not just individual subsystems, and they will continue to deliver more frequent and regular updates.

As you can imagine, that the amount of data between the car and the cloud that has to be managed will continue to increase. The connectivity side is where AWS IoT Core comes in. AWS IoT Core easily and securely connects devices to the cloud, including vehicles. Today I'm excited to announce the of MQTT v5.0. For AWS IoT Core, this lets customers connect devices and AWS IoT Greengrass, an open-source edge service that helps build, deploy, and manage intelligent device software. The MQTT protocol became a popular standard for IoT data transmission due to its lightweight implementation, especially for low power devices.

The latest protocol MQTT v5.0, is a significant update. It helps with ease of implementation, error reporting, and improved security. With MQTT v5.0 and AWS IoT Core, a client can send a message to unlock a door, say from a mobile app to a car. That car client receives the message and sends back an acknowledgement of the response topic.

From there, the application receives it and knows the car client received it and processed the message. We are really excited about the new possibilities and about having customers like Toyota already experimenting with MQTT v5.0. A moment ago, I said it starts with connectivity, but then comes data. Managing large fleets is challenging because vehicle data workloads, they are big data. First, there's an increasing number of connected cars, as I mentioned. In fact, McKinsey forecasts that by 2030, 95% of all new vehicles sold globally will be connected.

Second, not only is the number of connected vehicles growing, but each of those vehicles will have increasing numbers of sensors generating richer data, and that translates into terabytes of data per hour coming from vehicles. Finally, we're an industry that is evolving towards software-defined vehicles. Data is not only useful, but it now becomes imperative and a critical component for an ever-expanding list of features and digital services for customers and fleet managers that need to be understood and managed.

AWS IoT FleetWise is an AWS purpose-built automotive solution that was launched as GA in September of 2022. FleetWise enables end-to-end vehicle data management. It helps automakers and auto suppliers address today's challenges with vehicle data.

Data fragmentation across different vehicle models and components is one of the most pressing issues in the industry today. FleetWise standardizes data formats across vehicle models and components and does so very importantly, while protecting the proprietary information of every automaker and supplier. By enabling more efficient data management, FleetWise is helping to enable big data collaboration across the industry with manufacturers and suppliers.

This again helps to accelerate the journey to software-defined vehicles. We're excited to see how customers are already experimenting with IoT FleetWise. Here to share more on how our customers are leveraging both AWS IoT technology and purpose-built capabilities like FleetWise is our partners LG. Welcome, Mr. Kim.

[music playing] Good morning, everyone. I'm very excited and honored to be here at re:Invent IoT session today. My name is Tae Hoon Kim and I'm the EVP of LG CNS Cloud Business Division.

Now, to start with, if you look at LG logo here, what do we usually think about when you see the LG brand? LG, when we hear about LG, we often think about electronics and maybe chemicals and the technology like the batteries. LG is involved with many industries. LG has been collaborating with AWS for many years in the electronics and appliances spaces.

LG's ThinQ platform has worked with services like AWS IoT Core for years, and we have grown a number of connected devices, now more than 10 million every day. Some of you may already know LG is the leading supplier of our automotive component. It's very likely that if you drive a car today, you are surrounded by LG technology. LG has been a key supplier of in-vehicle infotainment system and telematics modules for over 20 years, as it develops and delivers the display product for premium luxury car brands, which includes the most recent free form oil displays. We continue to challenge ourselves to make the car safer and more convenient for all people. Our mission is to enrich the journey inside vehicles.

And to do this, we provide intelligent services by analyzing driver behaviors and vehicle conditions from departure to arrival. A car is not just a transportation device. For many of us, our car are something to be proud of, a symbol of our success and personal style. Every time we get into a car, we take a journey, a daily commute and shopping trips, traveling to holiday destinations and more. And of course, we want to make this journey safe and comfortable. LG has expanded its services in the Korean market.

These are services called Vehicle and Mobility Solutions, LG VMS in short. VMS is the data service platform that gathers information from cars and their surrounding information in order to provide better experience for drivers, passengers, and owners. Now allow me to just share with you how AWS and LG are working together to make the LG VMS better. One of our key challenges of building our VMS was the rapid prototyping. LG wanted to rapidly prototype services and test many different use cases and big data and the cost was, and still is one of our big constraints. Using AWS IoT technology, we were able to securely collect store and process and analyze data.

Thanks to our discovery of FleetWise at last year's the re:Invent. We were able to implement AWS FleetWise in LG VMS prototype stages. AWS fleet wise enabled us to standardize, and analyze our fleet vehicle data without having to develop a costly custom data collection system. And we are now collecting data in near real-time. We also faced another prototyping challenge. We needed a way to provide proper concept to attract our clients, but that required data for extraordinary cases, which was impossible to get.

We needed the data for dangerous driving situations to accurately test and ensure safety, prevent function failures, and resolve the problems of our operating massive fleet of our vehicles. With AWS FleetWise, LG was able to easily build a simulator using generated virtual data and fleet simulations that covered all the exceptional cases we needed to prove. Now, using LG prototype simulator and its near real-time, a fleet data processing performances automakers and commercial vehicle operators can pre-validate any services before they launch. LG and AWS have led the foundation for collecting, transforming, and transferring in-vehicle customer experiences data to the cloud. Now let's have a look at what's coming next from LG's Automotive team. As we move forward, we want you to expand our service to fleet vehicle operation monitoring, management and car sharing services.

By analyzing the safe driving scores and patterns, the numerous brand and car models, we are also planning to our service to manage vehicle end of life value. Furthermore, with machine learning and deep learning application in our VMS, we can analyze the cumulative driving patterns of our electric vehicles as well to provide the battery charge optimization and eco driving services. We will expand our coverage to include in-vehicle data and different industry generated data and public data convergence. That will broaden the spectrum of our hyper personalized services. In conclusions, LG believes automobiles are far more than just a means of transportation, for a huge that promises and realizes scalability. And with that, we believe that IoT hyper connectivity is the key to the success of our future solutions.

As we look to the future, it will be solutions like LGs developing in AWS IoT FleetWise that will advance this space even further and faster. We'll continue to see from these leaders more investment in machine learning, more data from vehicles, and focusing on solutions that will simplify and speed the journey to software-defined vehicles. Now, I'd like to invite Yasser back to the stage for closing thoughts on today's session. [music playing] So, as you've seen, IoT is really reinventing the world around us, and we are just in the beginning and we want everyone to collaborate, work together. Imagine there is three things I want to leave you with. It's my last slide. I promise.

Be cu--- So, I'm thinking about who's in the audience. There are buyers, there are builders, engineers, and there are partners. Be curious on how you want to engage to bring your customer new innovations and services. Be curious on what to use from available technology to get you where you want to start and get you faster. Innovate and think about newer ways to use this available technology; hundreds of available features and services. And the last one is the most important, in my opinion, collaborate.

This IoT is a truly team sport effort. We cannot do it by ourselves. No company can do it all together. Collaboration is almost a must to succeed in moving IoT to the world because remember, focus on the benefit to the customer, to the environment, the goodwill of the people and the earth.
