Art Vlog: lots of behind the scenes of an art business

Show Video

thank you squarespace for sponsoring today's video as soon as the scanned file from the fungi  painting was sent to me i got right into   doing the digital adjustments necessary to get  the prints ready before making the prints for   a new painting i do some digital adjustments  like erasing some pencil lines i couldn't erase   on the original as well as evening out  some parts that appear uneven in the scan   but don't appear this way in the original painting  this sometimes happens to some sections of the   background as a scanner works with light and in  the final piece the amount of painting placed   on each part of the surface of the background  is affected so i just even it out all digitally hello it is august 2nd and i finished today  to do all the editing for the digital scanning   from the fungi painting and i just  did the first try out print i don't   do the actual prints at home but this will help me  get an idea of how much detail i'm getting of how   the color palette is looking so i can make some  adjustments and actually everything looks perfect   i think i would just bring it a little down  on the magenta and a little up on the yellow   and after doing that i'm ready to order the first  print to see you know if everything's working fine   usually when i'm doing limited edition prints  or any prints for that matter i first do one try   out to see that everything is looking the way  it should that i didn't do like extra pen work   where i shouldn't and all all of those details um  but i'm actually very happy with how it's looking   i cannot believe it's almost here let me show you before we continue with today's art vlog i  want to share with you a little bit about   squarespace who is today's video and also is  the virtual home of my online shop my website   my art portfolio and my email campaigns so let  me share with you what i've been recently loving   about squarespace with squarespace i can link  my art portfolio directly to the day that the first artist  proofs of the fungi painting arrive i order them   maybe a week ago and i got two of them  trying them in different types of paper   both i always go with the most  sustainable paper that i can find   and these are hahnemühle papers the ones that i'm  trying today are hahnemühle paper they are 100   cotton acid free archival um but i'm trying to  they have a sustainable paper line so i'm trying   two of them one is made out of hemp the other one  is made out of agave i believe so i'm just trying   both of them to see you know if there's  any difference in the radiance and the   vibration of the colors in how it absorbs  the ink and whatnot i've used hahnemühle   sustainable line of papers before and i really  like them so i think this will be the paper that i   will be going for and for the fungi painting i've  decided that i will be doing a limited edition   print per year so each year i will open  up pre-orders for the limited edition   i'm not sure how long the pre-order will be open  for maybe it'll be like a two or three week window   and after that the orders will close i will make  the exact number of prints that were requested   that year and then that will be the limited  edition for 2022 and in 2023 i'll do the same   but each year they will there will be something  different either using a different type of paper   or a different size maybe both none no years  edition will be exactly the same as the other one   so there will be size and paper variations  probably um but i'm so excited for this and today   i actually got a little nervous because i realized  that there's four majors four major things   happening at the end of this month we are moving  we haven't signed a contract yet we've applied to   do different homes and we're still waiting to hear  back from them crossing fingers because the market   is insane people are applying to homes and rentals  before seeing them so we were actually on the list   to see one and then they reached back to us saying  someone actually already signed a lease site   unseen people are offering more money than what  the renters are their landlords are asking for   so the business is crazy the rental  business is crazy right now so hopefully   we will rent out the perfect home in time so  yeah we're moving i will be opening up the   pre-order for the fungi painting i am aiming  to doing this august 23rd most definitely   you i will be launching this video and posting  this video after that has happened but i will they say i will let everyone know that  this is happening um so yeah moving   releasing the prince for the evolution of  fungi or the fungi painting i'm not sure   what the actual name is yet because it's not the  actual evolution it's more of a taxonomic view   we'll see we'll see i'll figure that out  then we the cbs sunday morning piece that i   was interviewed for is coming out most definitely  the last week of the month and then on the 2nd of   september we are going to my sister's wedding  so we're moving and then two days later we're   flying out to my sister's wedding and there's just  all of these things happening at the same time   which i'm so excited for because  all of them are super exciting and   i just feel very very into them i also wanted to  release a group of fungi gifts for the lunch of   the of the prince so i want to make the lunch of  the prince and at the same time lunch maybe like   six or seven gifts to be used in instagram about  the fungi i have three that are ready and i know   what the other fungi will be i already have the  list but i need to work on them i'm working on my   patreon postcard which is ready  i just ordered that earlier today   today i'll be working on the patreon sticker which  will be the flower of mimosa pudica the sensitive   plant this leaf that has all the teeny tiny leaves  that if you touch they like close down the flower   if you haven't seen it is the most beautiful  flower ever she looks very similar to bobinsana   flower if you're familiar with bobinsana  which is this medicinal plant from the jungle   in peru and south america and i believe she's also  in costa rica but anyhow the flower is this like   pom-pom and fuchsia purple and hot pink  colors so i started working on that yesterday   maybe i'll finish today um we'll see how it goes  because it's the first time that i'm working on   a flower that has so thin petals maybe i'll  be adding the leaves who knows but i'll be   working on that i still need to make the key  for the fungi painting i am aiming of having   a black and white outline for each of the fungi  in the painting and then having a key so everyone   that gets the print knows what each of them is  if you see a process maybe to understand if it's   their reproductive system of a specific phylum and  whatnot and i'll stop talking and start doing but   just wanted to share with you all the things that  are happening and the fact that i just you know   came into consideration i was just awakened to the  fact that oh my god all of this is happening and   i haven't even started packing yet but that's why  i'm trying to get all things work done and ready   and ordered so then i can we can fully focus  on packing up this space and moving okay bye hello i am sorry in advance if the audio sounds  a little wacky my microphone has a battery and i   cannot find the charger i will be doing that right  after this but today we have our patreon call   today our monthly call will be on our tutorial  every month we change there's like four things we   do one month we have an art tutorial the next one  we have sharing our our challenge because we have   a yearly our challenge and we share what we've  worked on if people decide not to work on the   challenge it's pretty much a space for everyone  to share the current artwork they're working on   or maybe not working maybe fill in a blockage  or whatnot we also have um a cacao ceremony   where we connect with the spirit of the plants  and we pretty much wind down and share a bit   of what's happening currently in our lives  and the fourth one is we have a book club   it's not that we're all reading the same book  but we all share the current read that we have   and this one today we have our art tutorial  and today we are painting a lady veil mushroom   which is one of my favorite mushrooms if not my  favorite one i've drawn lady veil mushrooms before   this is one of them i have a digital drawing i had  a monthly patreon sticker i also have a gif coming   out pretty soon maybe it's out before this video  is and today we're working on another lady veil   but yeah before recording i wanted to share with  you my setup which is the first time that i'm   doing these since i got this new tripod i got this  new tripod extension maybe like four months ago   it's actually been super helpful for art filming  and it's the first time that i'm leading a class   this way i used to use my selfie stick thingy  um there was like 10 bucks and it's great for   a lot of things but this is definitely way more  professional than the other one that moves all   over and you know this one is way more sturdy so i  will be sharing all the section from the tutorial   with my phone up here you still need to set it up  completely i have omar my art supplies and i also   have my computer because i'm joining our zoom call  from both devices and that way for my computer   i can record and film the whole call also i  can manage uh who i'm pinning while they talk   who i'm you know i'm also putting some i'm playing  a playlist in the background so i want to be able   to change the volume of that and i also made a  pdf presentation sharing more of the physicality   of the lady veil as well as the different colors  it comes on some characteristics some fun facts   where it's where it comes from where it's used  etc so that's what the computer is for also i'm   not sure if i'm able to record from my phone i  actually usually don't have zoom on my phone so   i downloaded it for today's class and yeah  this is pretty much my setup and i'm super   excited to be sharing this call and be painting  a mushroom alongside all of the patrons that join our paint with me started with a presentation  where we learned all things lady lady vailed   where these mushrooms grow learning about  how they grow by watching time-lapse videos   the physical structures and sections  of these fungi as well as how humans   have worked with it throughout the  years i believe it is so important   to take a moment to learn and observe  before painting a new living being we started our paintings by doing a sketch  with pencil and then proceeded to paint it with   watercolors each of us has their own rhythm and  i love painting alongside others even digitally   these classes are so fun and relaxing and  i can't get enough i truly love the small   and beautiful community we've been cultivating  on the dancing flowers community on my patreon as we're moving and traveling quite soon  i am focusing on leaving as much work   related stuff ready and scheduled  as i can so lots of logistics   and computer work when i do my voice-offs for  videos i take a special time of my day to do this   to get inspired in order to write and to speak  with presents i feel i can tell when i've recorded   an audio in a hurry or tired so this is a  special time for me to check in and re-center one of my biggest works  lately has been the fungi key i truly believe in the importance and   the magic that an art piece has when it stops  being just a visual piece but it also become   an invitation for education and for learning  more about the beauty that our planet has so for today i finished adding all the numbers  can you see anything so for now i finish   adding all the numbers to the fungi  painting and what i will be doing now is and i also did this quite simplified key where i have each division,  so each phylum, each subdivision , like every   subdivision for the ascomycota and from  which number a range until what number range   the species go i've only counted the  amount of species i have a bunch of   fungi within the same species so right  now what i'll be doing is printing out the   outline of the fungi painting with all the numbers  that i've added so i can have that in handy   and then and then slowly i can start writing down  the scientific name for each of the fungi species   that i have on the painting i believe that i  have 315 species of fungi within the painting   later on i will be counting how many fungi i  painted maybe it's double maybe it's a little more   because for most of them i have either two or more  from the same species so yeah i'm just curious to   really know how many fungi i have but so this is  something that's actually super challenging i have   to find out all the scientific names for each of  them and not everything's on on the same space   not everything is on the same digital folder  because you know it's been two years and months so   i need to find all of that put it all together  but that's pretty much all work for today i'm so sleepy i am not used to   you know days that i work so much time in  the computer afterwards i'm just like my eyes the plants i'm currently  communing with open up slowly   with spiral they invite me  to dance to open up police hello it is wednesday yesterday  after filming i decided to   dedicate the whole day and night to  clean everything organize clean recycle   it was one of those days i feel that you know for  the past few weeks months i've been in this reset   routine but it's definitely not a one day thing  but you know i'm like 25 days meditating every day   and showing up to my practices and cleaning  has been the one that has been like in the back   burner for the longest cleaning and organizing  so stuff is clean but it's just like everywhere   and it's chaotic and that really affects my  mind i'm one of those people that really feels   the more organized things are the clearer and  organized my mind is so yesterday i had it and it   kind of didn't make any sense we're moving in two  weeks and it's like why not just put everything   away instead of organizing but it'll just make me  feel so good about this organization and yesterday   i nailed a lot of it which was great that's why i  don't have a lot of footage from yesterday doing   non-painting art business stuff because  it was more of a cleaning day and i feel   that's definitely something that's  also part of my art business which is   not being a robot and you know there's days where  i nail and cross off a lot of things from my   our business to-do list mother's day is when i  cross stuff of my to-do list of being a human   like cleaning my home and taking two hours  for uh traffic for drinking in english   or you know like a good old 40 minutes to  clean the whole shower and those types of   things so yesterday was one of those days  which is one of those reality checks and   i do feel that you know some days i work  on saturday so then a day off like that   more for home stuff is okay because that's where  the balance lies and with all the construction   going on currently in this building i've also  started to love to work on weekends because   those are the the um quieter days so i can record  stuff and whatnot so then i do work some weekends   weekend days and take not take off but dedicate  for other stuff weekdays just wanted to share   that anyway today this morning started early  and i've been doing a lot of computer work i   recorded the voice off for an upcoming video that  i'm very excited for also did the text so usually   i'm like thinking about what i'll be sharing what  is it that i want to share in this video of course   that could be a whole other video how i plan  videos but you know it's been kind of weeks in   writing little stuff in my journal that  are related to the topic of slowing down   and slow painting days which is what this video  is all about so today i put all that together and   i feel that i'm the most inspired to write right  after my morning routine so today right after my   morning routine i sat down and i've been writing  all that came up for that video then i you know   edited that text now i did the voiceover for  that i share that with evo as evo will be the one   adding the voice off and the text and all of that  to that upcoming video today i'm also working on   a survey for patreons i want to get their feedback  on what they love and want to see more what they   would rather see less of on our patreon and  it will be anonymous so i'm working on that   i also have a to-do list i just got approved one  of the videos that i have with a brand they're   sponsoring one of my upcoming videos  the one that i'm sharing this friday   so uh that was just the proof which is great  so i need to you know work on the subtitles   and get everything ready i usually share my  videos 24 hours before with patreons and then   24 hours later with the rest of the world so i'm  working on that and i would also love to work on   some gifts i am really looking forward to the  launch of the pre-order of the fungi painting   and i've been working on mushroom gifts  i want to make some fungi gifts um   for the lunch kind of having a fun guy party i  don't know so i've worked on three gifts already   i would love to make three or four more so i  will probably be working a little bit on that   also you know getting some stuff done for the  move for our move and i don't know we'll see   what other stuff in my to-do list we  nailed down today because there's a lot so this is a reishi mushroom that i did for a  sticker sheet that i released last year and i   thought of turning it into a gift so this will be  the end frame from the gif most of the mushroom   gifts that i'm creating are starting on actually  the evolution of these specific fungi from you   know when the fruiting body appears until it's in  full bloom or until the spores come out so this is   pretty much reishi when it's ready and mature so  i want to make the the gif be from as soon as it   appears out of the log or the mycelium substrate  bag wherever it's growing so in order to make the   gift it's been beautiful to do a lot of research  on looking at time lapses of different sorts of   mushroom growth so today i will be doing the one  for reishi maybe starting another new one and   you're coming along with me if you're sticking to  today's video today i would also love to add some   fungi names to the key for the fungi painting  and that's a bit of what will be happening today i love making gifs i think they are so fun to  make and use so it is a special relaxing time   for me to work on them i've been using my ipad  since 2018 to make digital art and i feel like i'm   finally feeling comfortable doing it i  don't think digital art will ever replace   painting with actual art supplies for me  as it has such a special place in my heart   but it is definitely a magnificent  tool that i've started to love slowly this collection of gifts or gifs  i'm not sure how to call them   includes the lady veil mushroom  reishi purple coral inky cup   devil's fingers and verdigris alg i hope you  love them as much as i've loved making them hi it is friday and today i'm working on the key  for the fungi painting i hope i'll have it ready   when i start sending the prints out i believe  i've shown you before but i worked on adding   all the numbers first i worked on doing all  the outline for each of the fungi that are   part of the painting then i added numbers to  each of them to each specie because they're   there's not only one fungi for each  specie let's say if i have portobello   um i don't have only one portobello painting  i have like two or three painted in there   so within the painting i have a  little bit more than 320 species of   fungi and what i'm doing is classifying them  in order and then you know folks will receive   their print the actual edition of the print and  there they will also receive a paper with the   numbered keys so then they can see i don't know  maybe number 183 and then in the back they will   have all the scientific names for each of the  320 plus species of fungi so they they can know   you know which division which phylum and what's  the actual scientific name for these fungi that   they are looking at and the main reason why i  really want to do this is because i you know   this piece has been super educational for me  it's been a source of not only inspiration and   it's been beautiful to paint the fungi but it's  also been research and i have learned so much   and i would love to share a little bit within  the painting so people are not only getting   something i hope beautiful to add to their homes  or wherever their they will place the paint the   prints but also to actually get some educational  information on it so uh you know it's been two   plus years on making the painting so i have all  the information regarding each species in hard   drives in my computer in my ipad some stuff on my  phone some stuff on the cloud so i'm trying to put   all of that together in order to make the key and  the only way to get it it's to start i feel that   i don't feel a lot of fear surrounding the blank  page when i start painting because it's a very   intuitive and fun activity for me to start a  painting without even knowing where it's going   i feel that's part of the magic but then  when this which is way more structure   and you know right side of the brain stuff now  i have so much fear of the blank page but the   only thing that i can do to surpass that fear is  start so that's what today's work is all about   and whenever i have some part of my work that is  you know fear of the blank page or i feel it's   challenging or i feel kind of scared to do it  or it's more like brainy stuff like doing taxes   or you know the stuff that i prove i would prefer  not to put together i love to just start the day   pretty slow i did my yoga my cacao meditation  journaling this morning then i went to my local   coffee shop so i got some treats i got a kombucha  i got my favorite popcorn so i feel treating   myself is the best way for me to really be like  okay let's do this i'll put a one of my favorite   playlists at the moment and i feel that really  helps me get past those moments where i'm like so now i'll get into it because  talking here is also part of   avoiding starting so i'll go ahead and start this fungi gifts are now  ready and you can find them   by going to the gift section on instagram  stories and searching "caro fungi" as well as by searching their scientific  names of each of the mushrooms i did that is everything for today's video i hope you  enjoyed it thank you for keeping me company and   thank you once again squarespace for sponsoring  today's video feel free to use the code category   when you have a next purchase through squarespace  and i hope to see you on another video pretty soon
