hello welcome to sv seeker saving vessel seeker  that's the big boat behind me we're in tulsa   oklahoma this is built from scratch and we're  getting ready to put all the electronics on her   and they're right mutt come on let's go do it this  is not one of our normal videos we'll have some   grinding and welding but it's about electronics  that's captain charlie there say hello so we're   doing the normal things but what this video is  really about is about the navigation equipment   that's going on the boat because charlie's  an ocean-going captain and this guy down   here works the river system so it's a little  bit of a combination of their intelligence you   have some intelligence right uh only in what they  pay for and this young man drilling holes here is   extending the sea chest and this is mutt and jeff  how you guys doing today think of this division   don't do that to my camera get your slime all  over it and this is mutt and jeff so we're gonna   sit down we're gonna go over the details of the  system that we selected for seeker and give you   all the reasons why we did what we did and that we  spent a lot of money okay because this is the kind   of thing you can spend a lot of money on so it's  not one of your normal videos if you want to see   cut well grind go watch one of the other videos  what you really ought to do though if you're not   building a boat needing electronics get out in  your shop start building something okay charlie   and i have been sitting at these damn computers  for two days and i've been learning a lot he's   been shopping and explaining a lot to me and  probably a year this video is gonna be trash   right everything changes so quick in the industry  right what are the two big companies we've been   looking at we've been looking at raymarine  and navaco but navico under their umbrella has   lowrance right they bought the local lowrance  thing right and then they also have simrad and bng   and simrad is for motor yachts and b and g  is for sailing hats and then they also have   cmap cmap is one of their partners for mapping  technologies because you can also integrate cmap   or navionics charts with all the systems basically  oh is that right so when i buy a chart plotter i   don't really have to worry about am i limiting  myself to this person's maps right i can get cmap   or navionics right and now the answer is part of  garmin oh okay so they're all in bed with each   other anymore right and this is going to change  in a year probably and somebody else is going   to be in the middle right right and there's all  these other little i've looked at you know the diy   solutions a lot because obviously it's my kind  of thing right because i've seen people out there   with arduinos and raspberry pi's and developing  their own you know autopilot system and that   and chart using the free charts that are available  right we're going to skip all that and i guess you   don't have you've never seen it and you've never  used it right now the diy stuff so i'll take a lot   of heat for why didn't you use the diys the reason  is this it's real simple i got to launch this boat   august 21st this year so i'm gonna purchase a lot  of money's going into this the navionics packaged   everything the sonars the bottom sounder the radar  uh yeah yes the ais system not just the receive   but the transmit high-end radio the antennas for  gps for the ais and for the ahs radio right and   handsets that lets you talk like a walkie-talkie  through your vh all that stuff's included in this   package and this is like 17 20 000 maybe when i'm  finished with this thing so it's a lot of money   and it's not the diy approach but once i'm on  the water you can bet that hey we've got some   time we've got this little project wouldn't it  be nice to see if we could hook up a raspberry   pi to run the boat and we'll do something like  that but not to start with i don't want to go   down the m cards which is the river system and  learn how to sail the boat a brand new built boat   with all the problems that it's going to have  and also have the problems with navigation so   right i'm fortunate enough i have the money in the  bank which is remarkable for being at the end of   the bill that i still have money so first so let's  look at the systems we bought and well first off   we looked real hard at raymarine right and bng and  you've used both systems on the water i've used   both systems on the water um i'm more comfortable  with bng it is specific software for sailing   um and the other great thing with b and g is you  can take the some of the simrad products we used   the side scan sonar right from um vr from simrad  and it's actually a lowrance original product   which is fantastic for me because it's the same  product that i have our product line that i have   on the rov right so i'm already familiar with  that size scan product and we've put a network   switch in so we can actually integrate that  into the chart plotter right so we'll have the   ability to do that then put that in or the wi-fi  network and so instead of having a hard mount   screen you'll have your tablets your laptops that  you can feed all that information right because   the chart plotter itself has the wi-fi output so  that puts it onto our boats wi-fi network right   or it's even hard-wired you can use cat5 right one  up through a steel boat that might make sense to   put some cat5 through to get it up to the forward  cabin right and then anybody with a app galaxy app   tablet apple windows whatever can go to that  device and pull up the screen and actually do   everything you could do from the console right  so you could plot out your your route you can   see what the radar sees you can see what the  size can sonars and the forward looking one   gives you the ability to make sure you're  not going to run aground and it's eight   times the depth of the water is the what you're  seeing forward so if you're in 20 feet of water   you're seeing 160 feet out and when you're that  close in that shell you're going slow anyway   like working in to a a channel in florida i went  into one place they had a pvc pipe out there   no red no green there's a pvc pipe  sticking up out of water yeah welcome   yeah so i have a houseboat and it's like left  or right of it right toward it i don't know   there's a guy that walked out of the museum  over there on the shore and he's doing this   okay but with forward skin i could see oh  this is that he wants me to be on this side   so you could you can see what the radar sees you  can see what the size can sonar see it's going   to be a cool system yeah that's really nice and we  do have over the horizon capability with the radar   uh we went with the 48 mile so okay  we'll have end doppler for weather   so that'll give us a little bit of a good weather  eye so 48 miles that can't see a vessel unless it   was a really big vessel right but it can see the  weather right you see your storm cells your your   um all your super cells right anything that's high  up yeah and it will track it and the radar is good   for collision of wardens too right um when i'm  doing a passage i'll set my alarm ring at 11 miles   right so a sailboat and you got a cruise ship  11 miles you got about 15 20 minutes before you   really have to be concerned with the radar and the  new tracking software it'll give you closest point   of approach time the closest point of approach so  it sets off an audible alarm wakes you up yep and   then it tells you you've got this much time before  yeah you're on top of right and then you get on   your ais you look at the ship information you hail  them on the radio because collision avoidance is   both parties it's just not who has the right of  way i've had one cruise ship change direction   for me while i was sailing you had a cruise ship  change direction for us yeah north of turks caicos   the rest of them kind of expect that you're going  to go behind them or slow down yeah most your   figures don't you speak english yeah you said that  bngu was specific for sailing it integrates with   your wind instruments and it gives you your wind  angle apparent wind angle your lead line you know   how much are you losing when you're sailing the  weather oh so it gives you a course it's a bullet   is pointing but it's actually then will plot your  course that you're making right so for a new boat   it's going to give us really good information real  quick when we set the sails we think we're moving   well in this direction it'll tell us how much  we're actually being pushed off to the side   right so how effective our keels are at this  pointing into the wind yeah that's going to be   good ray marine does that as well but b and g is  just so specific for sailing and the integrations   that you can do with your charts your weather  you're telling about the autopilot too it does   something about sailing to the wind right you can  set your sails then you can just say sail to the   wind and it with the boat will maintain the wind  course if you're sailing with the wind coming over   this side right and the wind shifts a little bit  you're telling me the autopilot will shift the   rudder a little bit so it keeps that same angle  of the wind running over the boat yeah single   hand sailing that makes it great because  you can go down and get a 20 minute nap   right and if it changes too much then you'll get  alarms it sets off a lot yeah okay if it makes   this wind correction and there's a there's a shoal  out there that i can't see but it's on the charts   does it know to tell me about you'll set your  keel depth and your what allotted water under keel   yeah on the chuck butter yeah and then once  it calculates all that it will give you a   cone i don't i've never set it up to do an  audible alarm right but it will turn your   line red okay is that what i'm like planning  my route or is that why you're saying so i   just randomly said let's go this direction and  if it knows that i'm stupid i haven't looked to   see what's in that direction it will actually  yeah but this is where i warn sailors yeah   do not get glass blind do not look at that chart  that chart plotter and keep from looking outside   because everybody newer sailors like that glass  console right and they get blind they just stare   at that chart plotter what is interesting what is  it you might see out the window that's not going   to show up on the chart plotter uh fisherman small  boat okay right so that could show up on the radar   not gonna show up already too small targets a  small target right um floating shipping container   fl yeah trash um you know what you're gonna miss  the whales you're gonna miss the dolphins off   the bow you're gonna miss the good stuff  right so you're gonna forget what it is   while you're out there yeah now that's a good  point down in antigua we were doing the oyster   regatta yeah and we had a baby humpback whales  swimming right next to us during the regatta   how cool is that that is cool yeah  so now we looked at raymarine and bng   equipment real closely and the phone call to  raymarine was really helpful right immediate   got an answer they had a number online you could  actually find it and call them right they answered   the phone you gave them a description of what it  is you wanted they gave you a list of the parts   and sent me emailed it to you it was a really good  experience it was great experience with raymarine   then we tried to go with b and g and the b and  g pardon navico is a european company based in   england right the only number on their website  is your uh england number right here in london   so we found a number online called it and it was  b g electronics in connecticut somewhere and they   said we're getting lots of these phone calls they  gave us a number which was bng us virgin islands   right then we did a little bit more searching  within uh when we finally got a hold of somebody   at bng right we took the number off the quote  and finally had a direct line it was five or six   steps to get a hold of somebody which is not what  you'd expect when you're trying to spend 17 000   right now when you go to buy this stuff we  would think you could just take these part   numbers and stick them into defender or overtons  or somebody like west marine west marine and you   you'd like a little bit of a discount for spending  seventeen thousand dollars at one whack you know   so we we checked with west marine first and  they have a pro account and you can fill out   and act like you're a wholesale distributor and  they'll review your account and then i called uh   neil who used to work with them he says you'll  get about a 10 discount well that's not a lot and   who was it was um uh overtones gave us to  get 10 right off the bat right but they were   really bad about not having it in stock  and when we asked them can you order it   even though they carry the lines yeah they said  we don't stock this we don't stop here we don't   want to talk and we got the same response from  defender defender until we went up the line   you got to say don't give up you  know the first one in the like   carla defenders like not in stock not in stock we  don't know price we don't get no pricing available   it's like you know half the list is not there  right so it's like we want you to spend eight   thousand dollars with you but we're not going to  help you spend and then we got the electronics   department so it's the moral to the story is  keep asking and keep being persistent it's the   bizarre world that you we live in that we have to  twist their arm to take our money for a product   right and we're also looking at b and g that's  still out on the uh yeah we sent some emails off   of them on friday right and you know here sunday  yeah so hopefully we hear something tomorrow yeah   so for all of you that think oh you got a youtube  channel just ask them to give you the equipment   no i have cash and it's still hard to get the  equipment so don't count on that being the   the route uh will we ask for a discount because  we have a youtube channel sure i will this much   money but are you gonna get it not necessarily  yeah defender gave us a little bit right off   the top yeah right off the top and they knocked  five percent off yeah and then they're gonna run   up to their web purchasing manager to see if  there's more available if they get some more   and i wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't go to  b and g and that's what this whole thing that's   that's how i'm going to thank hope this rest of  this game plays out if it doesn't i owe all of   you out there a big thank you because you guys  have purchased our product and watch our videos   and so thanks appreciate it now another thing  when you're buying your equipment is think about   where it's going to be located on your boat  i've got a forward scanning sonar that's up   on the bow and we're going to put it as far  back as we can because our keels will hit   ground before we that little sonar thing that  sticks out the bottom of the boat but it's going   to be right up here in front of the keels it  has to be because it's got to look forward and   it sticks down and it's about international yeah  so i might put some steel beside it just in case   you know it hits mud on the mississippi because  we're going to nose our boat into the banks so you   got to think about how you're going to use it and  think about where you're going to put this stuff   we found a fantastic place our side scan centers  are going to go at the back behind the keels and   they're kind of up on the side there's two of  them one that looks poor one looks starboard   so that's nice dual gives you better resolution  yeah it does and then in addition to that too   though there is one gadget that sticks down back  there and that's the little paddle wheel yeah log   yeah and it's got a down looking sonar that just  does depth right and it does temperature yeah and   then the cool stuff up in the mast is wi-fi and  the reason i like that is we send power up to it   if we get hit by lightning it's hopefully the  lightning energy is not going to go into our   wiring system but lightning is a weird thing it's  going to do what it wants so when it gets into a   cable it could run back down it could blow  up whatever's feeding at the power but it's   got a wi-fi signal back to the chart plotter so at  least it's not going to come to the chart plotter   right down its cable into the back it may find  a different way in but probably will no there's   no guarantees it's lightning it does strange  things but that is up on the mast and that um   is a little whirly gadget so those whirly gig  things the one on the bottom of both one of the   masks you can pretty much count those being  the fragile points right right they do make   one that's up on the mass you know there's  a lot of third-party equipment out there um   sv delos was showing one that is an anemone or  a wind speed indicator that's just three posts   and the wind blows through and it uses sound or  something to decide where the wind's coming from   how fast yeah we looked at that yeah but the  margin of error was five degrees that was a   lot yeah especially for a boat that's going to  use the autopilot to correct its direction based   on the wind change right we may we may use that we  may not use that something when you're buying bits   and pieces you might change to something like that  and you always upgrade that later yeah or you know   because all this stuff is fragile i mean there's  no you're not going to spend i don't i don't under   the impression i don't think anybody should  be that you buy this stuff and you're done you   know for the next never done it never done it's  about it's gonna break that's the stuff breaks   next time we see you maybe you'll be down here  help me install it all yeah oh we gotta get some   uh oh we gotta put a mast on the pilot house roof  for mounting the radar yeah we'll have to get the   height we'll look at the um schematics and the uh  templates we'll figure out how high we need to be   because we're going to be 16 18 feet off the water  right there anyway yeah the pilot house is yeah   easily then the idea is not to put the radar dome  way up on the mass hey because it's it's you know   when a boat rolls the mass moves around a lot and  it even though it's a dome it has a piece inside   that is spinning right right and they do have  compensation software built into the system to   take care of that yeah um in rough seas you will  see it hit the water and it will show waves etc   so they have a um ocean setting on your chart  plotter so it'll take some of that noise out   it doesn't take all of it out right if you take  too much of it out then you see nothing right   um it would give you the higher up it is it  gives you a better distance that we're going   to rise into especially with this one yeah  but we're already going to be 20 20 feet up   we're high enough yeah and you know what like i  told you before i had one sailboat that removed   and it was on the mizzen mast it was a steel  missing mass right and it was so close to massive   and it put a cone out the back that there was no  radar and we had a boat coming up behind us that   you didn't see it didn't see and the alarm didn't  see it no because no vision back there i see that   a lot you see that bracket that's on the mast and  it puts that radar dome right in front of a mass   so you can get around small things but and and  aluminum mast you can get around them really yeah   and this was not an aluminum mask steel yeah and i  had steel masks okay well i sure appreciate having   you here though that would have taken me weeks of  reading speaking of that and then you know you you   your your hands are tied by what marketing tells  you right and you fuse this stuff so right and   then you put it out there on the internet and you  get 1500 different opinions yeah and some of them   are from guys that have always been on lakes and  some of them were from guys that have always been   on ships and so you're actually in the right  category for me you're a sailor yeah i pretend   you've always come back so far that's right that's   gonna be worth something right  and i haven't lost anybody yet so cheers you
